Shimano Alfine SG S7001 11 SPD Intertnal Centerlock Rear Hub
The Shimano Alfine SG-S7001-11 is the internal-gear hub for riders who want eleven gears with nothing hanging off the frame: the gears live inside the hub in an oil bath, the shifting is by a single cable to a trigger or twist shifter, and the hub takes a chain or a Gates belt. It has a 409% gear range, which covers everything from a steep climb to a fast descent, a centerlock disc mount, 135mm quick-release spacing and 32 and 36 hole drilling. It is the hub we build for commuter, city, touring and belt-drive bikes that want to be clean and low-maintenance. This page covers the Shimano Alfine SG S7001 11 SPD Intertnal Centerlock Rear Hub.
The Alfine 11 is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
An internal-gear hub is a planetary gearbox inside the hub shell: a set of sun and planet gears that the shifter engages in different combinations to give eleven ratios from a single sprocket. The Alfine 11 runs its gears in an oil bath rather than grease, which makes it smoother and longer-lived than the 8-speed and needs an oil change every couple of years. Shifting is by a single cable through Shimano's Rapidfire trigger or a twist shifter, and the hub can shift at a standstill, which is a real advantage in traffic. It takes a single sprocket for chain or a Gates belt sprocket, has a centerlock disc mount, and is drilled for J-bend spokes in 32 and 36 hole.
The SG-S7051 Di2 version is the same hub with electronic shifting.
How it rides
An Alfine 11 bike is quiet, clean and undemanding. There is no derailleur to bend, no cassette to wear, no chain to slap, and with a belt drive nothing to oil; you shift when you like, including while stopped at a light, and the 409% range is enough for real hills. The hub is heavier than a derailleur setup and the shifting is a little slower, which on a commuter or touring bike does not matter.
For a simpler, cheaper hub the Alfine 8 and Nexus 5 are the choices; for eleven gears, an oil bath and belt compatibility, the Alfine 11 is the Shimano hub we recommend.

This version
This version is the centerlock hub in Bolt On 10x135mm, drilled for 32h, 36h, about 1665g, in black, silver. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Alfine 11; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.
This is the centerlock Alfine 11: the rotor sits on a spline and a lockring holds it, which saves weight over six bolts and makes swapping rotors a one-tool job. If your rotors are 6-bolt, a centerlock adapter fits them, or choose the 6-bolt version of the same hub.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Shimano Alfine SG S7001 11 SPD Intertnal Centerlock Rear Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 135mm quick-release spacing with a centerlock rotor mount; it needs a frame with horizontal, track or sliding dropouts, or an eccentric bottom bracket, to tension the chain or belt. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Alfine wheels with DT Champion or Competition or Sapim Race and Strong spokes and brass nipples.
It pairs naturally with the Velocity Dyad, Atlas, Chukker and Cliffhanger, Mavic A319, HED Belgium G and Velo Orange Voyager rims. Pick commuter or touring as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

How Shimano tests its hubs
Shimano publishes no load, fatigue, or salt-spray figures for its hubs. Its US warranty states that most bicycle products are warranted free from defects in material and workmanship for two years from original purchase, and that DURA-ACE and XTR components and wheels are covered for three years, for the original owner with proof of purchase. Competition or commercial use, improper assembly or repair, finish deterioration, labor, and normal wear are excluded; bearings, corrosion, dust seals and spokes are listed as wear parts.
Shimano's higher-end hubs, including the Dura-Ace R9270 wheel hubs, use cup-and-cone loose-ball bearings, which Shimano says “effectively displace lateral and vertical loads for smooth rotation and excellent durability — [and are] easier to adjust and service”. For the 2026 Dura-Ace WH-R9370 wheels Shimano states the system offers 30% lower rotational torque than typical cartridge bearings, that durability is enhanced with improved waterproof seals, and that balls, cups and cones are all replaceable. Dealer manuals instruct that only Shimano-specified lubricants be used, internal parts not be oiled, and the hub be inspected if the wheel becomes stiff. In 2023 Shimano introduced the TC600, TC500/QC500, QC400 and QC300 cartridge-bearing hubs with “Labyrinth & Contact” seals, described as double-sealed. A 2007 Bicycle Retailer report described Shimano's Malaysian hub and wheel factory as ISO 9001 and 14001 compliant, 89,000 square meters with 2,087 employees.
Certifications
- Warranty: 2 years / 3 years — Most bicycle products two years from original purchase; DURA-ACE and XTR components and wheels three years; original owner, proof of purchase; wear parts excluded (bearings, dust seals, free hubs, driver bodies, pawls, spokes) (source)
- ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 (Malaysian wheel/hub factory) — Reported by Bicycle Retailer, 19 Dec 2007: factory producing wheels incl. Dura-Ace, hubs, cranks, pedals is “ISO 9001 and 14001” compliant; 89,000 sq m, 2,087 employees (source)

Shimano publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the hub into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Shimano makes the Alfine; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Internal-gear hubs have large flanges and short spokes, and we cut every spoke from the measured ERD of the rim and the hub's flange figures, tension the wheel in stages with a gauge, stress-relieve it and true it before it ships, and we can supply the shifter, cable and sprocket to match your bike.
The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.
Warranty
Shimano's warranty. Shimano covers its bicycle components for two years from original purchase, with three years on DURA-ACE and XTR and one year on wheels, footwear and soft goods. Shimano's obligation is to repair or replace at its option, against the original dated receipt.
ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.

Alfine SG S7001 11 SPD Intertnal Centerlock Rear Hub questions
Will my rotors fit this hub?
This is the centerlock version, so a splined centerlock rotor drops on and a lockring holds it - one tool, no six bolts to torque or lose. If your rotors are 6-bolt they will fit with a centerlock adapter, or take the 6-bolt version of the same hub, which is a separate listing.
Does the Alfine 11 work with a belt drive?
Yes. It takes a Gates belt sprocket and is one of the most common hubs on belt-drive commuter and touring bikes.
What frame does the Alfine 11 need?
One that can tension the chain or belt: horizontal, track or sliding dropouts, or an eccentric bottom bracket. Vertical dropouts need a tensioner.
How is the Alfine 11 maintained?
An oil change every couple of years and the occasional cable adjustment; the hub is sealed and the gears run in an oil bath.
Alfine 11 or Alfine 8?
Alfine 11 for a wider 409% range, oil-bath internals and smoother shifting; Alfine 8 for a simpler, cheaper hub with a 307% range.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Shimano Alfine SG S7001 11 SPD Intertnal Centerlock Rear Hub?
We are not. Shimano manufactures the hub; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
Bolt On 10x135mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
