Whisky Co NO9 30W Carbon Disc Rim
The Whisky No.9 30w is the carbon rim Whisky Parts Co. built for the space between road and mountain: 36mm inside, hookless, tubeless-ready, disc only, in 650b and 700c with 28 and 32 hole drilling, for road-plus, gravel, cyclocross and cross-country tires from 35mm to 2.2in. It is a light, tough, sensibly priced carbon rim from a company that has been making carbon forks and rims for a long time.
This page covers the Whisky Co NO9 30W Carbon Disc Rim in 29in, 27.5in. The No.9 30w is not sold bare. You choose the hub and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
The No.9 30w is a shallow carbon rim with a hookless bead that seats tubeless tires easily and resists the rim damage a hooked bead takes on rock strikes, a 36mm inner width that suits 38 to 50mm gravel tires and 2.0 to 2.2in cross-country tires, and a matte carbon finish. External nipples, standard J-bend spokes, 28 and 32 hole, disc only. Hookless beads need tubeless-ready tires and the pressure limits printed on the rim.
How it rides
A No.9 30w wheel is light, quick and forgiving on rough gravel. The shallow section gives a little over washboard, the 24mm bed keeps a 42mm tire stable at low pressure, and the hookless bead shrugs off the rocks that dent alloy gravel rims. On a 650b bike with a 47mm tire it makes a plush road-plus wheel; on a cross-country bike with a 2.2in tire it is a quick race wheel. For gravel, road-plus, cyclocross and cross-country, the No.9 30w is the Whisky rim we recommend.

This listing
This is the 29in, 27.5in listing of the No.9 30w, 28h, about 525g, 36mm inside, 21mm deep, disc. Pick the size that matches your frame; the profile and construction are the same across the range.
This is the disc-brake No.9 30w: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Whisky Co NO9 30W Carbon Disc Rim comes in 29in, 27.5in and 28h drilling. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the No.9 30w on Industry Nine 1/1 and SOLiX, DT Swiss 350 and 240, White Industries CLD, Bitex BX 106, Hope RS4 and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray, D-Light or Race spokes or DT Aerolite and Competition, and brass nipples.
Tire range on the No.9 30w is 35mm to 2.2in, tubeless-ready tires only on the hookless bead. Pick gravel, cyclocross or cross-country as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Put it in a custom wheel
Build a custom wheel around the Whisky No9 30W Carbon Disc Rim — the link drops you into our Custom Wheel Program with this rim pinned, ready for you to choose the rest. It is set up for tandem and e-bike, mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
What Whisky Co says about testing
Whisky Parts Co, a Quality Bicycle Products brand in Bloomington, Minnesota launched in 2011, makes the No.9 carbon rims. Whisky publishes no test protocols, impact-energy or fatigue-cycle figures, lab names or third-party certifications; what it publishes is an ASTM riding-condition classification per rim. Whisky's ASTM chart (Feb 2020) rates the No.9 30d and 50d road rims Condition 2 (paved plus gravel roads, drops of 15 cm / 6" or less) and the No.9 30w, 36w, 40w, 50w, 70w, 80w, 100w and GVL Condition 3 (rough trails, jumps and drops under 61 cm / 24").
Warranty: Whisky states all Whisky rims carry a five-year warranty to the original owner. A limited crash replacement program supplies replacements at 50% off MAP through authorized dealers for products broken in normal riding; the damaged product must be returned. Exclusions include modification, neglect, competition or commercial use, normal wear, and carbon damage from assembly paste.
Certifications
- ASTM riding condition classification — No.9 30d, 50d = Condition 2; No.9 30w, 36w, 40w, 50w, 70w, 80w, 100w, GVL = Condition 3 (Whisky chart 258290, 2/20) (source)

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Whisky Parts Co. makes the No.9 30w; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Every No.9 wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.
The configurator shows only hubs and spokes that match the No.9 drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Whisky Co warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Whisky Co and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Whisky NO9 30W Carbon Disc Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 36mm inside this is a plus or fat width, for tires from about 2.6in upward. Running a narrow tire on a rim this wide leaves the casing stretched and vague, so match it to the tire it was designed around.
What does hookless mean for the No.9 30w?
Use tubeless-ready tires and stay under the maximum pressure printed on the rim, which for a gravel tire is well above what you would run anyway.
What tires fit the No.9 30w?
35mm to 2.2in. A 40 to 47mm gravel tire or a 2.1in cross-country tire is the usual pairing.
Is the No.9 30w tubeless?
Yes. It is a hookless tubeless rim; we tape and fit a valve on request.
650b or 700c?
Both are available; 650b for road-plus and smaller frames, 700c for gravel and cyclocross.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Yes. Whisky Co lists the Whisky NO9 30W Carbon Disc Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
Which spoke count should I choose?
It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
