Shimano Alfine Dynamo DH S501 6V 3W Centerlock Front Hub
The Shimano Alfine DH-S501 is the dynamo front hub that brings always-on lighting to a disc-brake commuter or touring bike at a sensible price: a 6-volt 3-watt generator with a centerlock disc mount, cup-and-cone bearings, 100mm quick-release spacing and 32 and 36 hole drilling. It powers a headlight and tail light at any speed and, with a USB charger, keeps a phone or GPS alive on tour. It is the dynamo we build when the budget does not stretch to a SON and the rider wants a disc mount. This page covers the Shimano Alfine Dynamo DH S501 6V 3W Centerlock Front Hub.
The Alfine dynamo is not sold bare. You choose the rim and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
A dynamo hub such as the Alfine DH-S501 is a generator: magnets in the shell spin around a coil on the axle and produce alternating current that a light or charger turns into something useful. The Alfine dynamo puts out the standard 6 volts and 3 watts, reaches useful headlight brightness at walking pace, and uses Shimano's low-drag design so it is hard to feel with the light off. The bearings are cup-and-cone, adjustable and rebuildable, and the rotor mounts by centerlock. Output is through a standard two-pin connector. The XT DH-UR705 is Shimano's lighter, lower-drag dynamo with the same output.
A front hub is a bearing carrier with flanges, and that is the whole job of the front Alfine dynamo: two sealed bearings on a stiff axle, end caps for your fork's standard, and flanges spaced to give the spokes a good bracing angle on the rotor side. There is nothing to engage and nothing to swap. Everything written about freehubs and engagement applies to the rear hub only; what you get up front is the same shell quality and the same seals without any of the moving parts.
How it rides
An Alfine DH-S501 wheel gives a commuter or touring bike a light that is always there and never needs charging, with a drag that is small enough to forget. On tour a USB charger turns it into a power source. The Alfine is heavier and drags a little more than a SON, which is the price difference. For a disc-brake commuter or touring bike on a budget, the Alfine DH-S501 is the dynamo we recommend.
A front wheel is where you feel a hub least and a build most. With no drive torque to carry, the front Alfine dynamo can be laced two-cross or even radial on the non-rotor side on a rim-brake bike, which makes a lighter, more direct-feeling wheel; on a disc bike we lace both sides crossed so the rotor's braking torque has spokes to pull against. Either way the front wheel is the one that steers, and a stiff, true front wheel is most of what makes a bike feel precise.

This listing
This is the centerlock version: QR 5x100mm, 32h, 36h drilling, about 564g, in black, silver. Same internals and flanges as every other Alfine dynamo; only the mount and axle differ.
Centerlock is the lighter, quicker rotor mount: a splined rotor drops onto the hub and a single lockring holds it, so a rotor swap takes a minute with a lockring tool and there are no six small bolts to torque or lose. Shimano and most current road and gravel rotors are centerlock; 6-bolt rotors fit with an adapter.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Shimano Alfine Dynamo DH S501 6V 3W Centerlock Front Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 100mm quick-release spacing with a centerlock rotor mount. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Alfine dynamo wheels with DT Champion or Competition or Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples.
It pairs naturally with the Velocity Dyad, Atlas, Chukker and Cliffhanger, Mavic A319, HED Belgium G and Velo Orange Voyager rims. Pick commuter or touring as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build it with us
We build this hub to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the Shimano Alfine Dynamo DH S501 6V 3W Centerlock Front Hub already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for road rim brake, gravel and road disc, touring, tandem and e-bike, mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.
What Shimano says about testing
Shimano publishes no load, fatigue, or salt-spray figures for its hubs. Its US warranty states that most bicycle products are warranted free from defects in material and workmanship for two years from original purchase, and that DURA-ACE and XTR components and wheels are covered for three years, for the original owner with proof of purchase. Competition or commercial use, improper assembly or repair, finish deterioration, labor, and normal wear are excluded; bearings, corrosion, dust seals and spokes are listed as wear parts.
Shimano's higher-end hubs, including the Dura-Ace R9270 wheel hubs, use cup-and-cone loose-ball bearings, which Shimano says “effectively displace lateral and vertical loads for smooth rotation and excellent durability — [and are] easier to adjust and service”. Dealer manuals instruct that only Shimano-specified lubricants be used, internal parts not be oiled, and the hub be inspected if the wheel becomes stiff. In 2023 Shimano introduced the TC600, TC500/QC500, QC400 and QC300 cartridge-bearing hubs with “Labyrinth & Contact” seals, described as double-sealed. A 2007 Bicycle Retailer report described Shimano's Malaysian hub and wheel factory as ISO 9001 and 14001 compliant, 89,000 square meters with 2,087 employees.
Certifications
- Warranty: 2 years / 3 years — Most bicycle products two years from original purchase; DURA-ACE and XTR components and wheels three years; original owner, proof of purchase; wear parts excluded (bearings, dust seals, free hubs, driver bodies, pawls, spokes) (source)
- ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 (Malaysian wheel/hub factory) — Reported by Bicycle Retailer, 19 Dec 2007: factory producing wheels incl. Dura-Ace, hubs, cranks, pedals is “ISO 9001 and 14001” compliant; 89,000 sq m, 2,087 employees (source)

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Shimano makes the Alfine dynamo; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Every dynamo wheel we build gets spokes cut from the measured ERD of the rim, the cones adjusted, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief and a final true before it ships, and we can supply and wire a light or charger.
In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.
Warranty
Shimano's warranty. Shimano covers its bicycle components for two years from original purchase, with three years on DURA-ACE and XTR and one year on wheels, footwear and soft goods. Shimano's obligation is to repair or replace at its option, against the original dated receipt.
ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.

Alfine Dynamo DH S501 6V 3W Centerlock Front Hub questions
Will my rotors fit this hub?
This is the centerlock version, so a splined centerlock rotor drops on and a lockring holds it - one tool, no six bolts to torque or lose. If your rotors are 6-bolt they will fit with a centerlock adapter, or take the 6-bolt version of the same hub, which is a separate listing.
How much drag does the Alfine dynamo add?
A little more than a SON, and small enough that most riders cannot feel it with the light off; with the light on it is about the cost of a slight headwind.
Can I charge a phone from the Alfine dynamo?
Yes, with a USB charger; 3 watts is enough for a light and slow charging at touring speeds.
Alfine DH-S501 or XT DH-UR705?
XT for lower drag and weight; Alfine for the lower price. Same output and disc mount.
Which lights work with it?
Any 6V dynamo headlight and tail light: Busch and Muller, Supernova, Sinewave and others; we can supply and wire them.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x100mm Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
Does it need special spokes?
No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.
