Boyd 44 Carbon Tubeless Rim Brake Rim

The Boyd 44 is the all-rounder in the carbon road range designed in Greenville, South Carolina: 44mm deep, which is the depth that balances aero, weight and crosswind stability for riders who want one road wheelset for everything, with a wide modern bed and a hooked, tubeless-ready bead. This page covers the Boyd 44 Carbon Tubeless Rim Brake Rim, the rim-brake version with a carbon brake track, one of the few deep rim-brake carbon rims still available for riders on rim-brake bikes.

The Boyd 44 comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the hub, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.

Design and construction

Boyd shapes its carbon road rims with a wide, rounded profile that lets a 28mm tire flow into the rim and keeps the airflow attached in a crosswind, and molds them with a hooked, tubeless-ready bead so they work with tubes, tubeless-ready tires and ordinary clinchers at normal road pressures. The 36 is the light climbing depth; the 44 and 60 are the deeper aero options. Boyd tests its rims to its own standards and covers them with a warranty and a crash-replacement program run from Greenville.

How it rides

A Boyd 44 wheelset is the sweet spot for most road riders: noticeably faster than a shallow rim on the flat, still light enough to climb on, and calm enough in crosswinds that you forget it is a deep rim. The carbon brake track works well with the carbon-specific pads we supply with the wheel. For climbing the Boyd 36 is lighter; for time trials the 60 is faster; for an everyday race and training wheel on a rim-brake bike, the Boyd 44 is the rim we recommend.

About this listing

Version notes. 700c, 20h, 24h, 28h, about 465g, 19mm inside, 44mm deep, rim-brake. The other sizes and brake versions of the 44 have their own listings; this page is for this one.

The rim-brake version of the 44 carries a machined braking surface on each sidewall, which is what a caliper or cantilever brake needs. It weighs a few grams more than the disc version and it is the one to choose for a rim-brake frame; the disc version is listed separately.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Boyd 44 Carbon Tubeless Rim Brake Rim comes in the drillings listed on this page. It is a rim-brake road rim with a carbon brake track. We build the Boyd 44 on Boyd's own 85 hubs, DT Swiss 240 and 180, White Industries T11, Chris King R45 and Bitex RAR hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray or CX-Sprint spokes or DT Aerolite, and brass or alloy nipples.

Tire range on the Boyd 44 is 25 to 30mm. Pick road as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build it into a wheel

This rim is live in our Custom Wheel Program for road rim brake and track and road single-speed builds. Start a build with the Boyd 44 Carbon Tubeless Rim Brake Rim and the configurator opens with this exact rim pinned at the top of the Boyd list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

Testing, standards and warranty at Boyd

Boyd Cycling builds its wheels in Greenville, South Carolina, and states that its Prologue, Podium and CCC alloy rims are rolled in an in-house aluminum rim facility in Greenville, and that carbon rim production in South Carolina began in 2025 after it acquired Munich Composites, giving "the only US based supply of both carbon and aluminum rims."

Boyd's road rims are hooked and, per its FAQ, "meant for tires under 30mm and pressures above 65PSI"; gravel and mountain rims are hookless and "usually will never see tire pressures above 40PSI." All rims have a tubeless rim bed. Boyd publishes no rider weight limit.

Warranty: Boyd states a limited lifetime warranty on carbon rims from 2018 onward and a 2-year (24-month) warranty on alloy rims, excluding broken spokes and worn bearings. Any Boyd wheel owner, regardless of age, condition or place of purchase, is eligible for a reduced-price rebuild, replacement or trade-in.

Boyd publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Boyd makes the 44; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.

Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.

Warranty

Boyd's warranty. Boyd Cycling warrants carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2018 for life against manufacturing defects and alloy wheels for three years, and runs a lifetime crash-replacement scheme that follows the wheel rather than the owner.

ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.

44 Carbon Tubeless Rim Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 19mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.

Is the Boyd 44 disc compatible?

This version is rim-brake with a carbon brake track. Use carbon-specific brake pads, which we supply.

Boyd 36, 44 or 60?

36 for climbing, 44 for all-round riding, 60 for time trials and flat racing.

Is the Boyd 44 tubeless?

Yes. It has a hooked, tubeless-ready bead; we tape and fit a valve on request.

What tires fit the Boyd 44?

25 to 30mm. A 25 or 28mm tire is the usual pairing.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. Boyd lists the 44 Carbon Tubeless Rim Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.

Which spoke count should I choose?

It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
