Boyd Altamont Tubeless Disc Brake Rim
The Boyd Altamont is the alloy rim that quietly does most of the road and light-gravel work in the Boyd Cycling line. Designed in Greenville, South Carolina by a company that builds wheels for a living, it has a 21mm internal width that suits everything from a 25mm road tire to a 40mm gravel tire, and it is tubeless-ready out of the box.
What we like about the Altamont in the shop is the offset spoke bed. The nipple holes sit 2.8mm off center, which evens out the tension between the drive and non-drive spokes on a rear wheel and makes for a wheel that stays true longer. It is a detail you normally find on more expensive rims.
The Boyd Altamont Tubeless Disc Brake Rim is sold here as part of a wheel we build. Pick the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and we will lace, tension and true it by hand before it ships from Georgia.
Design and construction
The Altamont is a welded aluminum rim with a modern, wide-bed profile: 21mm between the bead hooks, a moderate depth that keeps the weight down, and a tubeless-ready bed that seats most tires with a floor pump. Boyd offers it in disc and rim-brake versions; the rim-brake rim has a machined brake track.
The Altamont's 2.8mm offset spoke bed is the thing to notice. On a disc or geared rear wheel the drive-side spokes normally carry far more tension than the non-drive side; moving the spoke holes toward the non-drive side narrows that gap, so both sides sit closer to their ideal tension and the wheel resists going out of true.
How it rides
On 28 to 32mm road tires the Altamont rides like a good modern alloy rim should: a rounder tire profile than a 17mm rim gives, a little more comfort at lower pressure, and no flex you can feel from the rim itself. On 38 to 40mm gravel tires it becomes a very capable all-road wheel, light enough to climb on and stout enough for washboard.
The Boyd Altamont is not a deep aero rim, and it is not trying to be. If you want depth, look at Boyd's 36, 44 and 60 carbon rims; if you want a light, tough, sensible wheel for a lot of miles, the Altamont is the one.

This version
This version is the Altamont in 29in, drilled 24h, 28h, 32h, about 420g, 21mm inside, 26mm deep, disc. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.
This is the disc-brake Altamont: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Altamont is 700c only, in the drillings listed on this page. Tires from about 25 to 40mm. Disc and rim-brake versions are separate products; check the name on this page. Tubeless-ready; we tape and fit a valve when you choose tubeless in the build.
The Altamont pairs well with Boyd's own Quest hubs, with White Industries CLD, DT Swiss 350 and Industry Nine 1/1 for road and gravel, and with Sapim Race or DT Competition spokes.
Build a wheel around it
Offered for gravel and road disc, track and road single-speed, mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Boyd Altamont Tubeless Disc Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
How Boyd tests its rims
Boyd Cycling builds its wheels in Greenville, South Carolina, and states that its Prologue, Podium and CCC alloy rims are rolled in an in-house aluminum rim facility in Greenville, and that carbon rim production in South Carolina began in 2025 after it acquired Munich Composites, giving "the only US based supply of both carbon and aluminum rims."
Warranty: Boyd states a limited lifetime warranty on carbon rims from 2018 onward and a 2-year (24-month) warranty on alloy rims, excluding broken spokes and worn bearings. Any Boyd wheel owner, regardless of age, condition or place of purchase, is eligible for a reduced-price rebuild, replacement or trade-in.
Boyd publishes impact figures for its carbon rims. Boyd states the T1000-carbon Pinnacle Race gravel rim delivers "150 joules of impact resistance—on par with enduro MTB wheels," and lists "140J impact resistance, fatigue, and tire pressure testing" for the 55 Road Disc SL. BikeRadar reported the Podium 36 Disc SL rim withstands "more than 110 joules," more than 2.5 times the UCI's 40-joule requirement. Every wheel passes through five work centers with checks for true, runout and spoke tension. On the alloy CCC rim Boyd states it uses 0.7mm hooks (against a typical 1.1mm) with a thicker 1.35mm hook wall, heat-treated to T6.

Boyd publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Boyd designs and makes the rim; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. We build the Altamont into wheels to your spec, cutting spokes from the rim's measured ERD, tensioning in stages and truing to a tight tolerance before it leaves.
The configurator only offers hubs, spokes and lacing patterns that work with the drilling you pick and strikes through anything not made, so you can see the whole range. Prices update live as you build.
Warranty
Boyd's warranty. Boyd Cycling warrants carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2018 for life against manufacturing defects and alloy wheels for three years, and runs a lifetime crash-replacement scheme that follows the wheel rather than the owner.
ProWheelBuilder. Wheels we build around this part are covered by our own one-year warranty alongside the maker's. Within the year: broken spokes replaced regardless of cause, and the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning or a complete rebuild - included. A manufacturer-covered rim or hub failure is a claim we make and manage for you; one they will not cover is answered with an eligible replacement at 25% off retail. Shipping each way is yours. Parts you supply yourself fall outside it.

Altamont Tubeless Disc Brake Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
21mm inside is the all-road and gravel width. Think 32 to 45mm tires: wide enough to support a gravel casing properly so it holds its shape at low pressure, narrow enough that a 30mm road tire still sits right if you swap wheels between bikes.
Is the Boyd Altamont tubeless?
Yes. The bed is tubeless-ready; with tape, a valve and sealant it holds pressure reliably. Choose the tubeless option in the build and we do it here.
Disc or rim brake?
Boyd makes both. The disc version has no brake track; the rim-brake version has a machined sidewall. Make sure the product on this page matches your bike.
What tire size works best?
Anything from 25 to 40mm. A 28 to 32mm road tire or a 38 to 40mm gravel tire is where the 21mm inner width is happiest.
Why does the Altamont's offset spoke bed matter?
It brings drive-side and non-drive-side spoke tension closer together on a rear wheel, so the wheel stays true longer and spokes live an easier life.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Boyd Altamont Tubeless Disc Brake Rim?
We are not. Boyd manufactures the rim; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Yes. Boyd lists the Altamont Tubeless Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
