Boyd Quest Front Black Centerlock Disc Hub
The Boyd Quest is the disc hub Boyd Cycling builds its own wheels on, and it is a sensible, well-sorted hub from a company in Greenville, South Carolina that has been building wheels for a living for years. This page covers the Boyd Quest Front Black Centerlock Disc Hub.
The Quest is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
Boyd designs the Quest around bearings first: Enduro ABEC-5 cartridge bearings in common sizes, which roll smoothly, last well and are replaceable anywhere. End caps convert the Quest between 12mm thru-axle and quick-release standards in road, gravel and Boost MTB spacing, and the flanges are J-bend for the widest spoke choice.
The shell is machined and anodized black, with a low-flange profile on the road version and wider flanges on the MTB version for a stiffer wheel.
This is the front hub, and a front hub has no freehub. What matters here is the part of the hub that carries the wheel: the bearings, the seals, the axle and the two flanges, and the front Quest shares all of them with its rear partner. It is the simpler half of the pair and the one that runs longest between services. The driver and engagement story belongs on the rear hub's page; this page is about a front wheel that spins freely, stays sealed and builds stiff.
How it rides
It is the hub we suggest when a customer wants a Boyd rim on a Boyd hub, or simply a reliable disc hub at a fair price for a road, gravel or trail wheel.
On the road or the trail the front hub's job is to disappear: spin freely, keep water out, and hold the flanges still so the wheel tracks where you point it. The front Quest does that with the same bearings and seals as the rear and none of the rear's complexity, and because a front wheel carries less load and no torque it stays true longer than the rear on the same rim. When the rear finally needs a look, the front usually does not.

This version
This version is the centerlock hub in QR 5x100mm, Thru Axle 12x100mm, Thru Axle 15x100mm, Thru Axle 15x110mm Boost, drilled for 24h, 28h, about 150g, in black. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Quest; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.
This is the centerlock Quest: the rotor sits on a spline and a lockring holds it, which saves weight over six bolts and makes swapping rotors a one-tool job. If your rotors are 6-bolt, a centerlock adapter fits them, or choose the 6-bolt version of the same hub.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Quest wheels with Sapim Race, Laser or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and brass or alloy nipples.
It pairs naturally with Boyd's Altamont, Rouleur, CCC and carbon rims, and with any rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. The configurator recommends spoke count and lacing from your bike type and weight.
Put it in a custom wheel

It is set up for gravel and road disc, track and road single-speed, mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds.
How Boyd tests its hubs
Boyd Cycling designs its own hubs and builds them into wheels in Greenville, South Carolina. Every model runs on Enduro ABEC-5 cartridge bearings with LLU/LLB seals; the Grade 54 has a forged 6061-T6 shell, a 7075-T6 axle, straight-pull flanges and Centerlock mounting, the Sixtus mountain hub has six-bolt rotor mounting and Boost spacing, and Boyd states the Sixtus is "Fully eBike Rated". Published front weights are 120 grams for the Quest, 100 grams for the 85 road hub, 85 grams for the Grade 54 and 178 grams for the Sixtus.
Boyd states its hubs are tool-free to service, with the end caps swapped by hand, and publishes no bearing-life or durability test figures.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Boyd Cycling makes the Quest; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.
The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.
Warranty
Boyd's warranty. Boyd Cycling warrants carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2018 for life against manufacturing defects and alloy wheels for three years, and runs a lifetime crash-replacement scheme that follows the wheel rather than the owner.
ProWheelBuilder. Lace this into a wheel here and the finished wheel gets our own one-year warranty as well as the maker's. For twelve months we replace broken spokes however they broke, and the work on the wheel is on us - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild where it is needed. If the rim or hub is covered by its manufacturer we put the claim in and chase it; if it is not, we supply an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off the current retail price. Carriage both ways is the customer's, and this does not cover wheels built from parts you send in.

Quest Front Black Centerlock Disc Hub questions
Will my rotors fit this hub?
This is the centerlock version, so a splined centerlock rotor drops on and a lockring holds it - one tool, no six bolts to torque or lose. If your rotors are 6-bolt they will fit with a centerlock adapter, or take the 6-bolt version of the same hub, which is a separate listing.
What bearings does the Quest use?
Enduro ABEC-5 sealed cartridge bearings in common sizes, replaceable at any shop.
Quest or Boyd 85 road hub?
The Quest is the disc hub; the 85 is Boyd's rim-brake road hub. Pick by your bike's brakes.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Boyd Quest Front Black Centerlock Disc Hub?
No. Boyd makes the hub. ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia that builds it into a finished wheel to your spec.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x100mm Front or Thru Axle 12x100mm Front or Thru Axle 15x100mm Front or Thru Axle 15x110mm Boost Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
Does it need special spokes?
No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.
How long will the wheel take?
Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. The estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out.
Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
