Onyx MTB Lefty Front ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub

The Onyx Lefty is the front hub Onyx makes for Cannondale's single-sided Lefty fork: a large-bore hub that slides onto the fork's stub axle and clamps with a single bolt, with the rotor on the fork side, built with the same sealed bearings and labyrinth seals as the rear hubs and anodized in Minnesota in the full color range. Lefty hubs are rare and good ones are rarer, and this is the one we recommend for a Lefty-equipped Cannondale that wants a matching rear. This page covers the Onyx MTB Lefty Front ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub.

The Onyx Lefty is not sold bare. You choose the rim and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The Lefty hub is built for Cannondale's single-sided fork: a large-bore shell that slides onto the fork's stub axle and clamps with a single bolt, with the rotor on the fork side. It uses the same sealed bearings and labyrinth seals as the rear hubs, which matters on a hub that carries the whole wheel from one side.

Machined and anodized in Minnesota. Truing a Lefty wheel needs the right adapter in the stand, which is one reason these come to a builder rather than a workbench.

This is the front hub, and a front hub has no freehub. What matters here is the part of the hub that carries the wheel: the bearings, the seals, the axle and the two flanges, and the front Lefty shares all of them with its rear partner. It is the simpler half of the pair and the one that runs longest between services. The driver and engagement story belongs on the rear hub's page; this page is about a front wheel that spins freely, stays sealed and builds stiff.

How it rides

It builds into a stiff front wheel on any 6-bolt disc rim.

On the road or the trail the front hub's job is to disappear: spin freely, keep water out, and hold the flanges still so the wheel tracks where you point it. The front Lefty does that with the same bearings and seals as the rear and none of the rear's complexity, and because a front wheel carries less load and no torque it stays true longer than the rear on the same rim. When the rear finally needs a look, the front usually does not.

This listing

This is the 6-bolt version: Lefty 50mm, Lefty 60mm Super Max, Lefty 73mm Olaf, 32h drilling, about 200g, in baby blue pc, black ano, black aura pc, black matte ano, blu. Same internals and flanges as every other Lefty; only the mount and axle differ.

Six-bolt is the original disc mount and still the most universal: any ISO 6-bolt rotor from any brand bolts straight on, rotors are cheap and easy to find anywhere, and the six-bolt flange is a robust, simple interface that has been on mountain bikes for twenty-five years. Centerlock rotors do not fit it.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Onyx MTB Lefty Front ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page and fits Cannondale Lefty forks with the current bolt-on axle interface; check your fork generation before ordering, and text us if you are unsure. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Lefty wheels with Sapim Race or D-Light spokes or DT Competition and brass nipples.

It pairs with any 6-bolt disc trail rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. Give the configurator your bike type and weight; it picks a sensible spoke count and lacing pattern, which you can override.

Put it in a custom wheel

What Onyx says about testing

Onyx Racing Products hubs are made in the USA by a division of Christianson Systems in Minnesota; in a 2020 interview the company described itself as "Minnesota made and owned". Bearings are hybrid ceramic on the Classic line and an upgrade option on Vesper; the distributor states "Since early 2025 all Onyx hubs have been assembled with high-quality Japanese EZO bearings." Onyx specifies a grease service temperature range of -58°F (-50°C) to 248°F (120°C). It publishes no bearing-cycle, salt-spray, ISO 4210 or load-test figures. Onyx's specifications state radial lacing is not permitted on any Onyx hub and set a maximum spoke tension of 120 KgF.

The European distributor recommends "a seasonal check-up 2-3 times a year".

The figures, certificates and media above are Onyx's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the hub.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Onyx makes the Lefty; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Every Lefty wheel we build gets spokes cut from the measured ERD of the rim, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief and a final true before it ships.

In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.

Warranty

Onyx's warranty. Onyx Racing Products covers its hubs under a five-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

MTB Lefty Front ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the 6-bolt version: any ISO 6-bolt rotor bolts straight on with six T25 bolts, which is still the most common and the easiest rotor to replace anywhere. Centerlock rotors do not fit it - for those, take the centerlock version of the same hub, listed separately.

Which Lefty forks does the Onyx Lefty fit?

Current bolt-on Lefty axles; check your fork generation before ordering and text us if you are unsure.

Which rotor mount?

6-bolt, on the fork side.

Can I match it to a rear hub?

Yes. It comes in the same anodized colors to match a Vesper or Classic rear hub.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

Lefty 50mm or Lefty 60mm Super Max or Lefty 73mm Olaf. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Does it need special spokes?

No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.

How long will the wheel take?

Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. The estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
