Pillar PSR J Bend Rainbow 14G OR 2.0mm Spokesspokes
The Pillar PSR in rainbow is the plain 2.0mm straight-gauge stainless spoke in the oil-slick multicolor finish that made Pillar famous with show builders: a 14-gauge J-bend spoke, cold-forged in Taiwan with rolled threads, that turns a fixed-gear, single-speed or custom wheel into something people stop and look at. It is a straight-gauge spoke, so it is stiff and strong, and it costs sensible money. This page covers the Pillar PSR J Bend Rainbow 14G OR 2.0mm Spokesspokes.
We do not sell spokes loose. Pick the rim, hub and nipples in the configurator and the spokes are cut to length and built into the wheel here in Georgia.
Design and construction
A straight-gauge spoke is 2.0mm from the elbow to the thread, which makes it a little heavier and a little stiffer than a butted spoke and gives up nothing in strength. The PSR's rainbow finish is a coating over the stainless steel that shifts color with the light; it is cosmetic, and we handle the spokes carefully during building to keep it unmarked. The head and elbow are cold-forged and the threads rolled, and the spoke takes any 14-gauge nipple, including Pillar's matching rainbow nipples.
How it rides
A PSR wheel is stiff and simple and it looks like nothing else. On a fixed-gear or single-speed bike with a Velocity Deep V or H Plus Son Archetype in a color it is the show wheel, and it is strong enough to ride every day. For a lighter or aero wheel the Pillar PBA 1422 is the bladed version in the same finish.
We build a lot of PSR rainbow wheels for fixed-gear and single-speed riders who want the bike to be noticed, and the usual recipe is 32 PSR spokes on a Velocity Deep V in a matching anodized color, laced to a Paul or White Industries hub. Built to even tension with brass nipples it is a wheel that will take daily use and skidding for years, and the rainbow finish stays bright as long as the spoke wrench stays off it.

Which version this is
What this listing covers: the 14g straight gauge PSR rainbow in the J-bend pattern. A J-bend spoke has the elbow formed into the head and drops through a drilled flange, which is the older and far more common pattern. It fits almost any hub, replacements can be found in any decent shop anywhere in the world, and the elbow is the part that eventually fails - which is why it is seated properly and the wheel stress-relieved before it leaves us. If your hub has drilled flanges, this is the one you want.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Pillar PSR J Bend Rainbow 14G OR 2.0mm Spokesspokes is cut to length for your build; the configurator reads the rim's ERD and the hub's flange dimensions and works out the length. J-bend PSRs fit any standard J-bend hub in the catalog.
We pair PSR rainbow spokes with Pillar rainbow nipples or brass nipples; the configurator offers both. The PSR is a 2.0mm spoke from end to end, so it fits any hub with standard 2.3 to 2.6mm flange holes and any rim drilled for 14-gauge nipples.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Pillar makes the PSR rainbow; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.
The configurator shows only hubs and spokes that match the PSR rainbow drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Pillar warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Pillar and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
PSR J Bend Rainbow 14G OR 2.0mm Spokesspokes questions
Should I take this in J-bend or straight-pull?
Whichever your hub takes - it is decided by the hub, not by preference. A J-bend spoke drops through a drilled flange and is what the large majority of hubs use, which also makes a replacement easy to find anywhere. If your hub holds the spoke head directly with no drilling, you need the straight-pull PSR rainbow, which is a separate listing.
Is the rainbow finish durable?
It is a coating and it will wear where a spoke wrench or a chain touches it, so it suits show and street builds rather than mountain bikes.
PSR or PBA 1422?
PSR is the straight-gauge round spoke; PBA 1422 is the bladed aero spoke in the same rainbow finish. PSR for simplicity and stiffness, PBA for aero and weight.
Which nipples match?
Pillar makes rainbow alloy nipples to match; brass nipples are the durable alternative.
Is the PSR strong?
Yes. A 2.0mm straight-gauge stainless spoke is as strong as spokes get for everyday use.
Do I choose the spoke length?
No. The configurator calculates the length from the rim's ERD and the hub's flange geometry; we cut and thread the spokes here.
Which spoke should I pick?
The configurator recommends a spoke from your bike type, rider weight and rim; a stronger spoke is offered when the build calls for it.
