Reserve 30 GR Aluminum Clincher Rim
The Reserve 30|GR is the wide gravel rim in Santa Cruz's Reserve range, built for the 45 to 55mm tires that adventure and bikepacking bikes run at low pressure. This page covers the Reserve 30 GR Aluminum Clincher Rim, the aluminum version, which brings Reserve's 30mm gravel profile and tubeless bead to a rim at a fraction of the carbon price and with the toughness of a welded alloy extrusion.
It is sold here only inside a wheel we build: choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia, laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
The aluminum 30 GR is a welded double-wall alloy rim with a 27mm inner width and a tubeless bead, shaped like the carbon version so that a 45 to 50mm tire sits square and stable at the low pressures loose gravel and bikepacking loads want. The section is deep enough to be stiff under a loaded bike and the walls are thick enough to take the rock strikes wide-tire gravel riding produces. External nipples, standard J-bend spokes.
Reserve designs the rim in Santa Cruz, California, and backs it with its standard warranty; the lifetime warranty applies to Reserve's carbon rims.
How it rides
A wheel on a 45 to 50mm tire is the adventure-bike setup that makes rough roads and singletrack feel easy. The wide bed lets you run pressure low without the tire folding in corners, the alloy rim shrugs off rocks, and the whole wheel is lighter than most alloy touring wheels. It is a little heavier than the carbon 30 GR and does not have quite the same damping, which matters much less than the price difference for most riders.
For 35 to 42mm tires and gravel racing, the 25|GR is faster; for wide tires, loads and rough terrain, it is the Reserve rim we recommend. Riders who have dented lighter gravel rims on rocky descents are the ones who ask for it by name.

This version
This version is the 30 GR in 29in, drilled 24h, about 460g, 27mm inside, 30mm deep, disc. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.
The disc version of the 30 GR has no brake track, so the sidewall is a plain extrusion that saves a little weight and never wears; it is the one to choose for any disc-brake frame. The rim-brake version, listed separately, has a machined sidewall.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Reserve 30 GR Aluminum Clincher Rim comes in 29in and 24h drilling. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the 30 GR on DT Swiss 350 and 240, Industry Nine 1/1 and Hydra, White Industries CLD, Hope RS4 and Bitex BX 106 hubs, usually with Sapim Race, D-Light or CX-Sprint spokes or DT Competition, and brass nipples.
Tire range on the 30 GR is 42 to 57mm. Pick gravel or bikepacking as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build it with us
We build this rim to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the Reserve 30 Gr Aluminum Clincher Rim already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for mountain bike and MTB single-speed builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
How Reserve tests its rims
Reserve Wheels, Santa Cruz Bicycles' wheel brand, designs and tests its rims in Santa Cruz, California. Reserve states its rim shapes were developed "with information from testing in our carbon lab" and that "each wheel goes through a thorough human and machine-aided inspection before it gets put in the box." Press coverage (NSMB, 2017) described the in-house impact test as one side of the rim landing on a square-edged rock from over 3 feet with a tire at 25 psi, unlike the UCI test that strikes both rim walls with a flat pad and no tire. Reserve publishes no joule or fatigue-cycle figures and does not state where the rims are molded.
Reserve's tech document assigns each rim an ASTM use classification: Condition 1 for road rims, 2 for gravel, 3 for the 28|XC and 30|XC, 4 for the 30|SL and carbon 30|HD, and 5 for the aluminum 30|HD, 30|DH and 31|DH. Maximum pressures are 100 psi (6.9 bar) road, 80 psi (5.5 bar) gravel and 50 psi (3.4 bar) mountain, or the tire's limit if lower; spoke tension 100-120 kgf. Road rims are semi-hooked. Reserve states its wheels "do not have rider weight limits"; the 30|HD and 30|DH are e-bike approved.

Everything in this section is published by Reserve. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Reserve makes the 30 GR; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Every wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.
The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.
Warranty
Reserve's warranty. Reserve, made by Santa Cruz Bicycles, covers its rims for the lifetime of the rim to the original owner: a rim broken while riding is replaced, and damage from a non-riding incident is covered by a low-cost crash-replacement program.
ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

30 GR Aluminum Clincher Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 27mm inside this is a trail width, sized around 2.1 to 2.4in tires. That is wide enough to stop a modern trail casing rolling under you in a corner without pushing the tread so flat that it wears down the middle.
Is the aluminum 30 GR hookless?
It is a tubeless alloy rim; use tubeless-ready tires and follow the pressure limits printed on the rim and tire.
30 GR or 25 GR?
30 GR for 45mm and wider tires, loads and rough terrain; 25 GR for 35 to 45mm tires and speed.
Does the lifetime warranty cover the aluminum 30 GR?
Reserve's lifetime warranty is on its carbon rims; the aluminum 30 GR carries Reserve's standard warranty.
What tires fit the 30 GR?
42 to 57mm. A 45 to 50mm tire is the usual pairing on an adventure bike; 650b versions take 2.1in mountain tires.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Reserve 30 GR Aluminum Clincher Rim?
No. The rim is made by Reserve; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Yes. Reserve lists the 30 GR Aluminum Clincher Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
