Rolf Prima Elan Wheelset
The Rolf Prima Elan wheelset is Rolf's lightweight alloy climbing wheel, and it is sold as a single product in two versions: the Elan for rim brakes at 1345 grams and the Elan Disc for disc brakes at 1445 grams. Both use a 22mm-deep alloy rim with a 20mm inner width, 20 paired Sapim Laser spokes per wheel, and Rolf's US-made 4.4-level hubs with the T2 high engagement drive and a titanium freehub. You choose the brake type when you order.
It is for riders who want a wheel that climbs like carbon without carbon, riders who prefer alloy brake tracks in the rain, and anyone building up a light road bike on a sensible budget. Rolf describes the Elan as among the lightest alloy wheels available, and at 1345 grams for the rim brake version that claim holds up.
Paired spokes are the reason the Elan can be this light and still be recommended for everyday use. By bringing spokes to the rim in pairs, Rolf cancels the left and right pull at each pair, so a shallow, light alloy rim can be built true with 20 spokes and held at higher tension than a conventional 20-spoke wheel. Rolf says there is no sacrifice in stiffness or strength, even for heavier riders, which is not something usually said about a 1345-gram alloy wheel.
Design and construction
The rim is an alloy clincher, 22mm deep, 20mm inner width, tubeless compatible and shipped taped. It is a low-profile rim built for weight rather than aerodynamics, though Rolf notes the Elan is quieter in the wind than its shape suggests.
Hubs depend on the version. The Elan rim brake set uses TdF 4.4 hubs with quick release axles; the Elan Disc uses XST 4.4 hubs with Center Lock rotor mounts and thru-axle or QR end caps. Both are designed and manufactured in the USA, assembled in Eugene, and run Enduro steel cartridge bearings. The rear hub in either version has the T2 high engagement drive, a 48-tooth ring and three sprung steel pawls that Rolf rates as twice as fast as its earlier 24-tooth ring, and a CNC-machined 6Al-4V titanium freehub offered in Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 and Campagnolo N3W.
Spokes are Sapim Laser round, 20 front and 20 rear, paired. Disc axle options are 15mm, 12mm or 9mm QR front and 142mm thru axle or 135mm QR rear. Rim brake axles are quick release.
How it rides
The Elan is a climber's wheel first. The low rim weight makes it accelerate eagerly and it takes very little effort to keep turning on a long climb. The T2 drive picks up quickly out of corners, and the alloy rim gives predictable braking on the rim brake version in all weather. Paired spokes keep the wheel stiffer than a 20-spoke, 22mm alloy wheel has any right to be, but this is still a lightweight wheel by design.
It suits climbers, lighter riders, riders who want alloy rims for wet-weather braking, and anyone who wants a light training and climbing wheel with a proper US-made hub. Rolf's own guidance is that heavier or very aggressive riders should look at the Vigor or Ares6 instead of the Elan, and we agree; the Elan Disc adds 100 grams and a stiffer hub interface but is still the light option in the range.

This listing
This listing is the Elan Wheelset as Rolf Prima sells it. The choices on this page are brake type: Disc Brake, Rim Brake; driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, Campagnolo N3W. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.
Fit and compatibility
Choose Rim Brake or Disc Brake at order time; the hubs differ and the wheels are not convertible. Elan rim brake: quick release, 100mm front and 130mm rear. Elan Disc: Center Lock rotors, 15mm, 12mm or 9mm QR front, 142mm thru or 135mm QR rear. Freehub bodies on both are Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 and Campagnolo N3W in titanium.
Rolf's tire chart rates its 20C road rims, which includes the Elan and Elan Disc, for 23mm to 32mm tires, with maximum pressures of 110 psi at 23 to 25mm, 100 psi at 28mm and 80 psi at 30 to 32mm. The 20mm inner width supports a 28mm tire well; rim brake frames may limit you to 25mm or 28mm.
How Rolf Prima tests its wheels
Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.
The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.
Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.
On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.
Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima
The paired-spoke design is why a Rolf wheel looks the way it does, and it is not styling. Grouping the spokes in pairs lets the rim carry fewer, better-supported spoke holes, which is how Rolf builds a stiff wheel at a low spoke count. Trek licensed the technology for a period, which is why riders of a certain vintage recognize the look.
Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder
Rolf Prima builds every Elan and Elan Disc to order by hand in Eugene, Oregon. ProWheelBuilder in Georgia sells it, takes your brake type, axle and freehub choices, checks them against your bike, and sends the order to Rolf, who builds, tapes and ships the set. If you are not sure whether your older disc frame is 135mm QR or 142mm thru, or whether your Campagnolo groupset needs N3W, ask us before ordering.
If you would rather have a light alloy wheel on a specific hub, with more spokes for a heavier rider, or in a particular color, we build custom wheels on Astral rims, Rolf's own rim brand, in our own shop.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. This is a complete wheelset built by its manufacturer rather than in our shop, so the maker's warranty above is the one that applies to it. ProWheelBuilder's own one-year wheel warranty covers the wheels we build. We will still handle a manufacturer claim on your behalf.
