Rolf Prima Hyalite 25 ES Wheelset
The Rolf Prima Hyalite 25 ES puts Rolf's widest alloy gravel rim on its most affordable hubset. The rim is the same 23mm deep, 25mm inner width asymmetric aluminum extrusion used on the Hyalite 25, laced with 24 paired spokes per wheel to the XR 3.1 hub. Rolf lists the set at 1660 grams and offers it in 700c and 650b.
The Hyalite 25 ES is for riders who want a wide, tough, hand-built gravel wheel for bikepacking, rough gravel and drop-bar mountain bikes, and who are fine with a fixed 12x100 and 142x12 axle setup and an aluminum freehub in exchange for a lower price. It is a strong pick for a first proper gravel wheelset or a dedicated adventure set.
Paired spokes matter as much on the Hyalite 25 ES as on any Rolf wheel. Meeting the rim in pairs cancels the left and right pull so each spoke runs at higher, more even tension, and the asymmetric rim improves that balance by up to 30 percent by Rolf's figures. The result is a 24-spoke wheel that carries a loaded bike without going out of true.
Design and construction
The rim is an asymmetric aluminum, tubeless-ready clincher, 23mm deep with a 25mm inner width. It ships taped with a valve for tubeless setup with a floor pump.
The hubset is XR 3.1, designed in the USA with sealed steel cartridge bearings and a forged aluminum freehub body. It uses Rolf's standard drive rather than the T2 high-engagement ring found on the XST hubs of the Hyalite 25.
Spokes are 24 front and 24 rear, round Sapim Race, laced in Rolf's paired pattern. Brake interface is disc with Centerlock mounts. Axles are fixed at 12mm thru-axle front and 142mm thru-axle rear. Freehub bodies offered on the Hyalite 25 ES are Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR and Shimano Micro Spline.
How it rides
Put a 45mm or 50mm tire on the Hyalite 25 ES and the ride is all about volume and traction. The 25mm inner width holds the tire in a round profile so it corners predictably on loose surfaces, and the low, shallow rim keeps the wheel from being pushed around by wind. Sapim Race spokes give a slightly stiffer, more robust feel than lighter spokes, which suits a wheel that will spend time under bags.
On a 650b build with a 47mm tire, the Hyalite 25 ES turns a gravel bike into something comfortable on rough doubletrack and mild singletrack. The XR 3.1 hub's slower pickup is the main thing you give up compared with the Hyalite 25; on open gravel it is not a factor, on technical climbs you will notice it. Rolf does not publish a rider weight limit and instead points heavier riders toward stiffer, higher-spoke-count models, and the 24-spoke Hyalite 25 ES is exactly that kind of wheel. Rolf's Certainty program covers the Hyalite 25 ES with a five-year warranty and lifetime crash replacement, and Rolf keeps replacement parts available permanently.

This listing
This listing is the Hyalite 25 ES Wheelset as Rolf Prima sells it. The choices on this page are driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Shimano Micro Spline; wheel(s): Wheelset - 700c, Wheelset - 650b. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.
Fit and compatibility
Select 700c or 650b when ordering the Hyalite 25 ES. Axle spacing is 12x100 front and 142x12 rear only; QR and Boost frames should look at the Hyalite 25, which has the full axle menu on its XST hubs. Rotor mounting on the Hyalite 25 ES is Centerlock.
Freehub bodies are Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR and Shimano Micro Spline, so road, gravel and mullet drivetrains are covered; Campagnolo is not offered on this hub. Rolf's tire chart governs the 25mm inner width. We suggest 40mm to 50mm tires on 700c and 47mm to 2.1 inch on 650b.
How Rolf Prima tests its wheels
Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.
The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.
Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.
On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.
Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima
The paired-spoke design is why a Rolf wheel looks the way it does, and it is not styling. Grouping the spokes in pairs lets the rim carry fewer, better-supported spoke holes, which is how Rolf builds a stiff wheel at a low spoke count. Trek licensed the technology for a period, which is why riders of a certain vintage recognize the look.
Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder
Rolf Prima builds each Hyalite 25 ES to order in Eugene, Oregon. We sell it from ProWheelBuilder in Georgia and confirm your wheel size, axle spacing and freehub against your bike before the order is placed with Rolf. Because the ES hub is thru-axle only, we check that first. If you are choosing between 650b and 700c for the Hyalite 25 ES, tell us your frame's tire clearance and we will help you decide.
We also build custom wheels on Astral rims, Rolf Prima's rim brand, so if you want a 25mm inner width alloy wheel on a different hub, in Boost spacing, or with 28 or 32 spokes for expedition loads, we can build that for you instead.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. This is a complete wheelset built by its manufacturer rather than in our shop, so the maker's warranty above is the one that applies to it. ProWheelBuilder's own one-year wheel warranty covers the wheels we build. We will still handle a manufacturer claim on your behalf.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
