Shimano 105 FH R7070 Centerlock Disc Black Rear Hub

The Shimano 105 FH-R7070 is the disc-brake rear hub for Shimano's 11-speed 105 groupset: a 12 x 142 thru-axle rear with a centerlock rotor mount, cup-and-cone bearings that are adjustable and rebuildable, an 11-speed HG freehub, labyrinth seals and a forged aluminum shell in 28 and 32 hole. It is the best-value disc road hub made and the sensible choice for a Shimano-equipped road or gravel disc bike. This page covers the Shimano 105 FH R7070 Centerlock Disc Black Rear Hub.

The 105 R7070 is built to order here. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.

Design and construction

Shimano hubs run loose balls between a cone on the axle and a cup in the shell, with the preload set by the cones and locked with a nut; set properly, they are smoother and longer-lived than most cartridge hubs and they can be serviced with two cone wrenches anywhere in the world. The 105 freehub is Shimano's HG 11-speed body with a quiet pawl mechanism, and the shell is forged aluminum with J-bend flanges. The HB-R7000 front matches it.

How it rides

A properly adjusted 105 disc hub rolls smoothly and quietly for years and can be serviced anywhere. It builds into a road or gravel disc wheel that is stiff, reliable and inexpensive enough that the budget goes into the rim. It is the hub we suggest for a Shimano 11-speed disc road bike on a DT Swiss RR 421, HED Belgium R, Boyd Altamont or Velocity Aileron.

Which version this is

Version notes. Centerlock rotor mount, Thru Axle 12x142mm, 32h, 36h, about 360g, in black. If your frame or fork uses a different standard, the other versions of the 105 R7070 on this site cover it.

This is the centerlock 105 R7070: the rotor sits on a spline and a lockring holds it, which saves weight over six bolts and makes swapping rotors a one-tool job. If your rotors are 6-bolt, a centerlock adapter fits them, or choose the 6-bolt version of the same hub.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Shimano 105 FH R7070 Centerlock Disc Black Rear Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 12 x 142 thru-axle spacing with a centerlock rotor mount and a Shimano HG 11-speed freehub. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most 105 disc wheels with Sapim Race, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and brass nipples.

It pairs naturally with the 105 HB-R7070 front, and with the DT Swiss RR 421 and GR 531, HED Belgium R and G, Boyd Altamont and CCC, Velocity Aileron and Astral Wanderlust rims. Pick road or gravel as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build it into a wheel

This hub is live in our Custom Wheel Program for gravel and road disc, touring and mountain bike builds. Start a build with the Shimano 105 Fh R7070 Centerlock Disc Black Rear Hub and the configurator opens with this exact hub pinned at the top of the Shimano list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.

Shimano's testing and certifications

Shimano publishes no load, fatigue, or salt-spray figures for its hubs. Its US warranty states that most bicycle products are warranted free from defects in material and workmanship for two years from original purchase, and that DURA-ACE and XTR components and wheels are covered for three years, for the original owner with proof of purchase. Competition or commercial use, improper assembly or repair, finish deterioration, labor, and normal wear are excluded; bearings, corrosion, dust seals and spokes are listed as wear parts.

stated engagement is 10 degrees (TC600), 15 degrees (TC500/QC500) and 22.5 degrees (QC400/QC300), with interchangeable Micro Spline and HG freehub bodies. The warranty lists free hubs, driver bodies and pawls as wear parts not covered.

Certifications

  • Warranty: 2 years / 3 years — Most bicycle products two years from original purchase; DURA-ACE and XTR components and wheels three years; original owner, proof of purchase; wear parts excluded (bearings, dust seals, free hubs, driver bodies, pawls, spokes) (source)
  • ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 (Malaysian wheel/hub factory) — Reported by Bicycle Retailer, 19 Dec 2007: factory producing wheels incl. Dura-Ace, hubs, cranks, pedals is “ISO 9001 and 14001” compliant; 89,000 sq m, 2,087 employees (source)

Shimano publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the hub into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Shimano makes the 105 R7070; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.

The configurator shows only rims and spokes that fit the 105 R7070 drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

Shimano's warranty. Shimano covers its bicycle components for two years from original purchase, with three years on DURA-ACE and XTR and one year on wheels, footwear and soft goods. Shimano's obligation is to repair or replace at its option, against the original dated receipt.

ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

105 FH R7070 Centerlock Disc Black Rear Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the centerlock version, so a splined centerlock rotor drops on and a lockring holds it - one tool, no six bolts to torque or lose. If your rotors are 6-bolt they will fit with a centerlock adapter, or take the 6-bolt version of the same hub, which is a separate listing.

Which cassettes fit the 105 R7070?

Shimano and SRAM road cassettes up to 11-speed on the HG freehub. It does not take 12-speed Micro Spline or XDR cassettes.

Which axle standard is the 105 R7070?

12 x 142mm thru-axle, the road and gravel disc standard.

Why cup-and-cone bearings?

They are adjustable, rebuildable and serviceable anywhere with two cone wrenches; set properly they run smoother and longer than most cartridge hubs.

Is the 105 R7070 good for gravel?

Yes. Its labyrinth seals and centerlock mount suit gravel bikes; pair it with a wide tubeless rim.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Shimano 105 FH R7070 Centerlock Disc Black Rear Hub?

We are not. Shimano manufactures the hub; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

Thru Axle 12x142mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
