Son Dynamo SON Delux Wide Body SL Hub
The SON Delux Wide Body SL is the Delux Wide Body with Schmidt's SL system: the electrical contact is built into the axle ends, so on a fork wired for SL the hub connects the moment the wheel is fitted, with no wires or spade connectors at the hub and nothing to catch or corrode. It keeps the Wide Body's stiffer flange spacing, the Delux's low-drag tuning, the sealed construction and the five-year warranty. It is the dynamo for custom randonneur and gravel frames built with SL forks. This page covers the Son Dynamo SON Delux Wide Body SL Hub.
The SON Delux Wide Body SL is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
The Delux uses the same sealed construction as every SON, with air exchange through a pressure-compensation system rather than the bearings and a five-year warranty that covers them, in a smaller, lighter shell with a coil and magnet arrangement tuned for higher wheel speeds. Schmidt makes it in a standard version, a Wide Body version that spreads the flanges for a stiffer wheel, and an SL version whose axle carries the electrical contact so a matching fork needs no wires or connectors at the hub.
Because the front Delux Wide Body SL dynamo has no freehub, it is the hub that asks for the least: a spin of the axle to check the bearings once a season and nothing else. The flanges, bearings and seals are the same as the rear's, the axle converts between the front standards with end caps, and the rotor mounts the same way. Choose it to match a rear of the same model, or on its own for a fork that needs a new front wheel.
How it rides
A Delux Wide Body SL wheel rides exactly like the Wide Body, stiff and nearly drag-free, and the SL contact means the front wheel comes out and goes back in like an ordinary wheel with the lights working the moment it is clamped. On a frame built for it, it is the cleanest dynamo installation there is.
A front wheel is where you feel a hub least and a build most. With no drive torque to carry, the front Delux Wide Body SL dynamo can be laced two-cross or even radial on the non-rotor side on a rim-brake bike, which makes a lighter, more direct-feeling wheel; on a disc bike we lace both sides crossed so the rotor's braking torque has spokes to pull against. Either way the front wheel is the one that steers, and a stiff, true front wheel is most of what makes a bike feel precise.

This version
This version is the front rim-brake hub in QR 5x100mm, drilled for 32h, about 380g, in black. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Delux Wide Body SL dynamo; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.
This is the rim-brake Delux Wide Body SL dynamo, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Son Dynamo SON Delux Wide Body SL Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 100mm spacing with the brake mount shown in the configurator; it needs a fork with SL contacts, or it can be run with a standard connector using Schmidt's adapter. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most SL wheels with Sapim Race, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and brass nipples.
It pairs naturally with the HED Belgium G, DT Swiss GR 531, Reserve 25 GR, ENVE G23 and the gravel rims in the catalog. Pick gravel or randonneur as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build it with us
We build this hub to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the SON Delux Wide Body SL Hub already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for road rim brake, track and road single-speed and touring builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.
How Son Dynamo tests its hubs
SON (Wilfried Schmidt Maschinenbau) states that “Each hub dynamo and headlight is thoroughly tested during and after assembly” in Tübingen, Germany, where a team of about 30 designs, develops and produces on CNC machinery; roughly 15,000 hub dynamos are sold annually. All SON hub dynamos are rated 6 volts / 3 watts conforming to German road-traffic regulations (StVZO). Published SON 28 data: mark of conformity K 834 for 16-inch to 29-inch wheels; efficiency 65% at 15 km/h in a 28-inch wheel; no-load loss 0.5 W at 15 km/h; 26-pole neodymium rotor; hollow 10 mm stainless steel axle; 6082-T6 aluminum shell; SKF 629-2RSH bearings; 440 g (disc 6-bolt 460 g, center lock 430 g). The SONdelux is approved under K 687 for 16-inch to 28-inch wheels (400-716 mm) with the Edelux headlight; it and the straight-pull SON 29 S weigh 390 g.
SON states that “Best possible protection against water ingress is realized by the unique pressure compensation system”, warns that grease on the skewer shaft can block it, and says the hub must never be exposed to strong water jets or immersed. The generator works without gears or contact. Bearings are “high-end bearings sealed on both sides from SKF”; SON's FAQ says they are lifetime-lubricated, normally run maintenance-free for many tens of thousands of kilometers, need no adjustment, and are replaced by the manufacturer should a fault occur.

Son Dynamo publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the hub into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
SON makes the Delux Wide Body SL dynamo; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.
The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.
Warranty
Son Dynamo's warranty. SON dynamo hubs carry a five-year warranty against defects in material and manufacture.
ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

SON Delux Wide Body SL Hub questions
Can I use this hub with disc brakes?
No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.
What is SL?
Schmidt's connector-less system: the electrical contact is in the axle ends and the matching fork carries the wiring, so the hub connects when the wheel is clamped.
Can I use the SL hub on a normal fork?
Yes, with Schmidt's SL adapter, which gives it a standard connector.
Delux Wide Body or Wide Body SL?
SL only if your fork is built for it; otherwise the standard Wide Body is the same hub with a normal connector.
What is the SON warranty?
Five years, including the bearings.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Son Dynamo SON Delux Wide Body SL Hub?
We are not. Son Dynamo manufactures the hub; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x100mm Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
