Velo Orange Front Hub
It comes in 32 and 36 hole and it matches Velo Orange's rims and the rest of its range. This page covers the Velo Orange Front Hub.
The Velo Orange hub is the hub for Voyager and Enterprise wheels, and it is built to order here. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.
Design and construction
The disc version adds a 6-bolt rotor mount and ships with end caps for 135mm quick release and 142 x 12mm thru-axle. Flanges are J-bend in 32 and 36 hole.
Because the front Velo Orange hub has no freehub, it is the hub that asks for the least: a spin of the axle to check the bearings once a season and nothing else. The flanges, bearings and seals are the same as the rear's, the axle converts between the front standards with end caps, and the rotor mounts the same way. Choose it to match a rear of the same model, or on its own for a fork that needs a new front wheel.
How it rides
It suits touring, randonneur, commuting and classic road wheels, and its polished finish matches a Voyager or Enterprise rim for a wheel that looks like a set. For a lifetime hub the Phil Wood or White Industries is the step up; for a good-looking, reliable hub at a fair price, the Velo Orange is the one we recommend.
Front wheels on disc bikes take a beating from braking: the rotor side sees the whole braking torque and the spokes on that side run at higher tension. That is why we build the front Velo Orange hub with the rotor-side spokes crossed and tensioned to the rim's limit, and why the hub's flange spacing matters more than its weight. Ridden on a rim-brake bike the same hub makes one of the lightest, simplest front wheels there is.

Which version this is
Version notes. Rim-brake rotor mount, QR 5x100mm, 32h, 36h, about 200g, in black, silver. If your frame or fork uses a different standard, the other versions of the Velo Orange hub on this site cover it.
This is the rim-brake Velo Orange hub, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Velo Orange Front Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page with the axle and brake options shown in the configurator. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Velo Orange hub wheels with DT Champion or Competition and Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples.
It pairs naturally with the Velo Orange Voyager and Enterprise, H Plus Son TB14 and Archetype, Velocity Dyad and Chukker and Mavic A319 rims. Pick touring, randonneur or road as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Velo Orange's testing and certifications
Velo Orange hubs are made by a partner factory in Taiwan that Velo Orange has visited and documented. Spoke holes "are actually punched rather than drilled", leaving a chamfer Velo Orange states is "best for J-bend spokes to prevent creating a stress riser at the elbow". On quality control it states: "Every hub is tested for smoothness and play before packaging—every single one." No impact, fatigue or ISO figures are published.
All Velo Orange hubs use sealed cartridge bearings. The Chronos range uses "high-flange architecture, which allows for large sealed cartridge bearings", 58mm flanges, 6-bolt rotor mounts and replaceable endcaps swapped without tools; the Chronos front disc hub is 155g and covers 100mm QR, 12x100 and 15x100. Velo Orange states "Defective parts/accessories can be exchanged for one year from purchase date", for the original buyer with proof of purchase. No rider weight limit is published.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Velo Orange makes the hub; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.
The configurator shows only rims and spokes that fit the hub's drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Velo Orange warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Velo Orange and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Lace this into a wheel here and the finished wheel gets our own one-year warranty as well as the maker's. For twelve months we replace broken spokes however they broke, and the work on the wheel is on us - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild where it is needed. If the rim or hub is covered by its manufacturer we put the claim in and chase it; if it is not, we supply an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off the current retail price. Carriage both ways is the customer's, and this does not cover wheels built from parts you send in.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Front Hub questions
Can I use this hub with disc brakes?
No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.
Is there a disc version?
Yes, a 6-bolt disc rear in 135mm quick release or 142 x 12mm thru-axle with the included end caps, and a disc front.
Polished or black Velo Orange hub?
Both; polished matches the Voyager and Enterprise rims.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Velo Orange Front Hub?
We are not. Velo Orange manufactures the hub; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x100mm Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
Does it need special spokes?
No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.
How long will the wheel take?
Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. The estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out.
