Boyd 36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim

The Boyd 36 is the shallowest of Boyd Cycling's carbon road rims, designed in Greenville, South Carolina, for climbing and all-round road riding: 36mm deep, tubeless-ready, with a wide modern bed that suits 25 to 32mm tires and a layup tuned for the compliance a long day on rough tarmac wants. Boyd builds its own carbon road wheels on it and sells it bare for builders, and it is the rim we suggest for a light carbon disc wheel that is calm in a crosswind.

This page covers the Boyd 36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim. The Boyd 36 is sold here only inside a wheel we build: choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia, laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

Boyd shapes its carbon road rims with a wide, rounded profile that lets a 28mm tire flow into the rim and keeps the airflow attached in a crosswind, and molds them with a hooked, tubeless-ready bead so they work with tubes, tubeless-ready tires and ordinary clinchers at normal road pressures. The 36 is the light climbing depth; the 44 and 60 are the deeper aero options. Boyd tests its rims to its own standards and covers them with a warranty and a crash-replacement program run from Greenville.

External nipples, standard J-bend spokes, disc only on the 36.

How it rides

A Boyd 36 wheelset is light, quick and calm. It climbs like a shallow rim, it does not tug at the bars in a gust, and with a 28mm tubeless tire it is comfortable all day. It gives up a little aero to the 44 and 60, which you feel on a fast flat road and never on a climb.

For racing and fast group rides the Boyd 44 is the better all-rounder; for climbing, gusty roads and riders who dislike deep rims, the Boyd 36 is the rim we recommend.

This version

This version is the 36 in 700c, drilled 24h, 28h, about 465g, 22mm inside, 36mm deep, disc. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.

The disc version of the 36 has no brake track, so the sidewall is a plain extrusion that saves a little weight and never wears; it is the one to choose for any disc-brake frame. The rim-brake version, listed separately, has a machined sidewall.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Boyd 36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim comes in the drillings listed on this page. It is a disc-brake road rim. We build the Boyd 36 on Boyd's own Quest hubs, DT Swiss 240 and 180, Chris King R45, Industry Nine SOLiX and 1/1, White Industries CLD and Hope RS4 hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray or Laser spokes or DT Aerolite, and brass or alloy nipples.

Tire range on the Boyd 36 is 25 to 32mm. The configurator recommends spoke count and lacing from your bike type and weight.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for gravel and road disc, tandem and e-bike, touring and track and road single-speed builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Boyd 36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

How Boyd tests its rims

Boyd Cycling builds its wheels in Greenville, South Carolina, and states that its Prologue, Podium and CCC alloy rims are rolled in an in-house aluminum rim facility in Greenville, and that carbon rim production in South Carolina began in 2025 after it acquired Munich Composites, giving "the only US based supply of both carbon and aluminum rims."

Warranty: Boyd states a limited lifetime warranty on carbon rims from 2018 onward and a 2-year (24-month) warranty on alloy rims, excluding broken spokes and worn bearings. Any Boyd wheel owner, regardless of age, condition or place of purchase, is eligible for a reduced-price rebuild, replacement or trade-in.

Boyd publishes impact figures for its carbon rims. Boyd states the T1000-carbon Pinnacle Race gravel rim delivers "150 joules of impact resistance—on par with enduro MTB wheels," and lists "140J impact resistance, fatigue, and tire pressure testing" for the 55 Road Disc SL. BikeRadar reported the Podium 36 Disc SL rim withstands "more than 110 joules," more than 2.5 times the UCI's 40-joule requirement. Every wheel passes through five work centers with checks for true, runout and spoke tension. On the alloy CCC rim Boyd states it uses 0.7mm hooks (against a typical 1.1mm) with a thicker 1.35mm hook wall, heat-treated to T6.

Everything in this section is published by Boyd. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Boyd Cycling designs and makes the 36; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer, and Boyd's warranty rides with the rim. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

Boyd's warranty. Boyd Cycling warrants carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2018 for life against manufacturing defects and alloy wheels for three years, and runs a lifetime crash-replacement scheme that follows the wheel rather than the owner.

ProWheelBuilder. Wheels we build around this part are covered by our own one-year warranty alongside the maker's. Within the year: broken spokes replaced regardless of cause, and the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning or a complete rebuild - included. A manufacturer-covered rim or hub failure is a claim we make and manage for you; one they will not cover is answered with an eligible replacement at 25% off retail. Shipping each way is yours. Parts you supply yourself fall outside it.

36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

22mm inside is the all-road and gravel width. Think 32 to 45mm tires: wide enough to support a gravel casing properly so it holds its shape at low pressure, narrow enough that a 30mm road tire still sits right if you swap wheels between bikes.

Boyd 36, 44 or 60?

36 for climbing and gusty roads, 44 for all-round racing and fast riding, 60 for time trials and flat courses.

Is the Boyd 36 hookless?

No. It has a hooked, tubeless-ready bead, so it works with tubes, tubeless-ready tires and ordinary clinchers.

What tires fit the Boyd 36?

25 to 32mm. A 28mm tire is the pairing most of our customers run.

Who is Boyd Cycling?

A wheel company in Greenville, South Carolina that designs its own rims and hubs and builds wheels by hand; it backs its rims with a warranty and crash-replacement program.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Boyd 36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim?

No. The rim is made by Boyd; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. Boyd lists the 36 Road Carbon Tubeless Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
