Boyd Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim

The Boyd Rouleur is the deeper of Boyd Cycling's two alloy road rims, designed in Greenville, South Carolina by a company that builds wheels for a living. Where the Altamont is the light, shallow all-rounder, the Rouleur adds depth for stiffness and a hint of aero, keeps a modern wide bed for 25 to 32mm tires, and is tubeless-ready out of the box. It comes in rim-brake and disc versions and it is the rim we suggest for a fast, tough alloy road wheel that does not cost carbon money.

This page covers the Boyd Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim in 700c. The Rouleur is sold here only inside a wheel we build: choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia, laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The Rouleur is a welded double-wall aluminum rim with a semi-aero section, a wide bed that gives a 25 to 28mm tire a rounder, faster profile than an old 17mm rim, and a tubeless-ready bed that seats most tires with a floor pump. Boyd offsets the spoke bed on its alloy rims, which brings drive-side and non-drive-side tension closer together on a rear wheel and keeps the wheel true longer. The rim-brake version has a machined brake track; the disc version has a plain sidewall.

Standard nipples, J-bend spokes, in the drillings Boyd builds its own wheels with.

How it rides

A Rouleur wheel is stiff and quick. The depth does not flex in a sprint, the wide bed keeps a 28mm tire comfortable, and the offset rear stays true. It is a little heavier than the Altamont and a good deal stiffer, which suits heavier riders, fast group rides and crit racing. For a lighter climbing wheel the Altamont is the choice; for a fast, tough alloy road wheel, the Rouleur is the Boyd rim we recommend.

This version

This version is the Rouleur in 700c, drilled 24h, 28h, 32h, about 430g, 21mm inside, 24mm deep, rim-brake. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.

The rim-brake version of the Rouleur carries a machined braking surface on each sidewall, which is what a caliper or cantilever brake needs. It weighs a few grams more than the disc version and it is the one to choose for a rim-brake frame; the disc version is listed separately.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Boyd Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim comes in 700c and 24h, 28h, 32h drilling, in rim-brake and disc versions; check the name on this page. We build the Rouleur on Boyd's own Quest and 85 hubs, DT Swiss 350 and 240, White Industries T11 and CLD, Bitex, Industry Nine 1/1 and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray, Race or Laser spokes or DT Aerolite and Competition, and brass or alloy nipples.

Tire range on the Rouleur is 25 to 32mm. Pick road as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for road rim brake, tandem and e-bike, touring and track and road single-speed builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Boyd Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

How Boyd tests its rims

Boyd Cycling builds its wheels in Greenville, South Carolina, and states that its Prologue, Podium and CCC alloy rims are rolled in an in-house aluminum rim facility in Greenville, and that carbon rim production in South Carolina began in 2025 after it acquired Munich Composites, giving "the only US based supply of both carbon and aluminum rims."

Boyd publishes impact figures for its carbon rims. Boyd states the T1000-carbon Pinnacle Race gravel rim delivers "150 joules of impact resistance—on par with enduro MTB wheels," and lists "140J impact resistance, fatigue, and tire pressure testing" for the 55 Road Disc SL. BikeRadar reported the Podium 36 Disc SL rim withstands "more than 110 joules," more than 2.5 times the UCI's 40-joule requirement. Every wheel passes through five work centers with checks for true, runout and spoke tension. On the alloy CCC rim Boyd states it uses 0.7mm hooks (against a typical 1.1mm) with a thicker 1.35mm hook wall, heat-treated to T6.

Boyd's road rims are hooked and, per its FAQ, "meant for tires under 30mm and pressures above 65PSI"; gravel and mountain rims are hookless and "usually will never see tire pressures above 40PSI." All rims have a tubeless rim bed. Boyd publishes no rider weight limit.

The figures, certificates and media above are Boyd's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the rim.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Boyd Cycling designs and makes the Rouleur; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Offset rims need the spoke lengths calculated per side, which we do from the rim's measured ERD and offset; every Rouleur wheel is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

Boyd's warranty. Boyd Cycling warrants carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2018 for life against manufacturing defects and alloy wheels for three years, and runs a lifetime crash-replacement scheme that follows the wheel rather than the owner.

ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

21mm inside is the all-road and gravel width. Think 32 to 45mm tires: wide enough to support a gravel casing properly so it holds its shape at low pressure, narrow enough that a 30mm road tire still sits right if you swap wheels between bikes.

Rouleur or Altamont?

Rouleur for a deeper, stiffer road wheel that suits heavier riders and racing; Altamont for a lighter, more comfortable all-rounder that also does light gravel.

Is the Rouleur tubeless?

Yes. It is tubeless-ready; we tape and fit a valve on request.

Rim brake or disc?

Boyd makes both. The rim-brake version has a machined brake track; the disc version has a plain sidewall. Make sure the product on this page matches your bike.

What tires fit the Rouleur?

25 to 32mm. A 28mm tire is the pairing most of our customers run.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Boyd Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim?

No. Boyd makes the rim. ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia that builds it into a finished wheel to your spec.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. Boyd lists the Rouleur Tubeless Rim Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
