DT Swiss 240 2020 + Straight Pull Rear Black Hub

The DT Swiss 240 EXP Straight Pull Rear Hub is the rim-brake road rear of the 240 family: a 130mm quick-release shell drilled 24, Ratchet EXP 36 inside, and 198 grams with a Shimano road body by DT's figure.

It is the straight-pull partner to a rim-brake road front; the J-bend 240 rim-brake rear is a separate listing. We build it to order by hand in Georgia.

Design and construction

With no rotor to clear, DT can put the non-drive flange where it wants it: 33.4mm from center, against 15.7mm on the drive side, with flanges of 37.2 and 44.1mm. That is a typical road rear geometry, and straight-pull spokes make the most of it because the drive side, which carries most of the tension, has no spoke elbows to fatigue.

A straight-pull hub holds each spoke head in a slot in the flange, and the spoke runs in a straight line from there to the rim. There is no elbow, and the elbow of a J-bend spoke is where almost every spoke that breaks gives way. The flange also fixes the line each spoke takes, so the hub decides the lacing pattern rather than the builder.

Ratchet EXP fixes one ratchet ring in the shell and floats the other on one spring; the wider bearing spacing that freed up gives a stiffer axle, and the body pulls off by hand for cleaning.

How it rides

A 240 EXP road rear is light, smooth and quiet, and it simply keeps working: the ratchets want a clean and a little grease now and then and the bearings run for a long time.

For a rim-brake road bike that sees fast group rides and the occasional long day, it is the hub we suggest most often.

This version

What this listing covers: the 240 EXP straight-pull rim-brake rear, 24h, QR 5x130. Freehub bodies are chosen in the configurator: Shimano HG road or MTB, SRAM XDR or XD, Micro Spline or Campagnolo, the Campagnolo option closed until an EXP Campagnolo body is in stock at our distributors.

For a disc road or gravel bike choose the 240 2020 + Straight Pull Rear Centerlock instead.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

It fits rim-brake road frames with 130mm quick-release dropouts. It needs straight-pull spokes, usually Sapim Race or CX-Ray straight-pull with brass or alloy nipples, and any rim-brake rim in 24 holes.

Choose road or touring as the bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and shows only 24-hole rim-brake rims.

Build it into a wheel

This hub is live in our Custom Wheel Program for road rim brake, touring and mountain bike builds. Start a build with the DT Swiss 240 2020 + Straight Pull Rear Black Hub and the configurator opens with this exact hub pinned at the top of the DT Swiss list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.

Testing, standards and warranty at DT Swiss

DT Swiss hubs pass through the same Performance Test Center in Biel as its rims. DT Swiss states that its laboratory tests replicate what products endure in the field over the whole product life cycle, under an internal factory standard that ensures compliance with ISO 4210. Hub-relevant methods are the drum test, in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight spins on an obstacle-studded steel drum for a specified mileage, and a brake and drive torque test in which cyclic braking and driving torques are applied to the hub while the wheel is locked or driven at constant speed. DT Swiss publishes no bearing-life, salt-spray or water-ingress figures.

the torque test also verifies "the freewheel functionality and durability". DT Swiss states that Ratchet EXP is 15% stiffer and gives longer bearing life through its increased bearing distance, and that Ratchet DEG uses larger steel ratchets to spread load over a larger contact surface. Ratchet EXP units built since 2019 with a 0 or 9 in the middle of the production code are covered by a free-inspection notice for premature ratchet wear.

Certifications

  • ISO 4210 / ASTM F 2043 — DT Swiss states its internal factory standard 'ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)' and sets test parameters by ASTM F 2043 riding conditions (self-declared, no certificate published) (source)
  • Warranty — 24 months legal warranty against material and manufacturing defects; ball bearings are wear parts and excluded (source)
  • Service interval — Clean and re-grease every 12 months (normal use) or every 3 months (extreme conditions) (source)

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

DT Swiss makes the DT Swiss 240 EXP straight-pull rim-brake rear; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We cut straight-pull spokes from DT's own flange geometry and the measured ERD of your rim, lace by hand, bring the wheel up to tension in stages with a gauge, stress-relieve it and true it last.

The configurator shows only straight-pull spokes for this hub, marks the lacing as set by the hub, strikes through combinations DT does not make and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.

ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.

240 Straight Pull Rear Rim Brake questions

Do I need special spokes?

Straight-pull spokes only. The configurator offers only straight-pull spoke brands with this hub.

Is 24 holes strong enough for a rear wheel?

For most road riders on a modern rim, yes; straight-pull spokes and a wide-flange road rear make a stiff 24h wheel. DT makes this straight-pull rim-brake rear in 24h only.

Does it come with a skewer?

No, the hub uses a standard 5mm quick-release skewer, which you can add in the configurator.

Which lacing pattern does it use?

The flange sets it; the configurator shows the lacing step as Determined by hub.
