DT Swiss RR 411 Asymmetric Rim Brake Rim

The DT Swiss RR 411 is the jack-of-all-trades alloy road rim: light enough for epic climbs, strong enough for mixed terrain and training, and offered in both a symmetric profile and an asymmetric one with a 3mm spoke-bed offset for more even spoke tension. The factory describes the RR 411 shape as its most advanced alloy road rim design, and it comes in rim-brake and disc versions with a hooked, tubeless-ready bead.

This page covers the DT Swiss RR 411 Asymmetric Rim Brake Rim in 700c. The RR 411 comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the hub, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.

Design and construction

The factory extrudes the RR 411 from high-quality aluminum and welds the seam, then smooths it, for the roundest and strongest joint in the range. At 18mm inside the rim supports a 25 to 30mm tire well and keeps the weight low. The asymmetric version offsets the spoke bed 3mm toward the non-drive side, which balances left and right spoke tension on a geared rear wheel or a disc front and makes a stronger, longer-lived wheel; the symmetric version suits a rim-brake front or a track wheel.

The RR 411 bead is hooked and tubeless-ready, and it takes standard nipples; The factory supplies PHR washers, which we build with. The spoke holes are angled to the wheel's dish.

How it rides

An RR 411 wheel is light and quick, the classic feel of a good alloy climbing wheel. With a 28mm tire it is comfortable and fast, and the asymmetric rear stays true through a season of hard riding in a way symmetric rims cannot match. It is not an aero rim; DT Swiss makes the RR 511 for that.

For a light road wheel on a rim-brake or disc bike that has to do everything from club rides to a mountain gran fondo, the RR 411 is the DT Swiss alloy rim we recommend.

About this listing

Version notes. 700c, 24h, 28h, 32h, about 435g, 18mm inside, 21mm deep, rim-brake. The other sizes and brake versions of the RR 411 have their own listings; this page is for this one.

The rim-brake version of the RR 411 carries a machined braking surface on each sidewall, which is what a caliper or cantilever brake needs. It weighs a few grams more than the disc version and it is the one to choose for a rim-brake frame; the disc version is listed separately.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The DT Swiss RR 411 Asymmetric Rim Brake Rim comes in 700c and 24h, 28h, 32h drilling, in rim-brake and disc versions and symmetric or asymmetric profiles; check the name on this page. We build the RR 411 on 350, 240 and 180 hubs, Shimano, White Industries T11 and CLD, Bitex, Hope RS4 and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim Laser, CX-Ray or D-Light spokes or Competition and Aerolite.

Tire range on the RR 411 is 23 to 32mm. Pick your bike type and weight in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for road rim brake, track and road single-speed and touring builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the DT Swiss Rr 411 Asymmetric Rim Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

Testing, standards and warranty at DT Swiss

DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.

Each rim page states a maximum system weight and ASTM classification: the R 460 road rim is rated "Max. System weight 110 kg", "ASTM classification 1" and not approved for e-bikes; the RR 481 is rated 130 kg, ASTM classification 2 and "Approved for e-bikes Yes (max. 32Km/h or max. 250W)".

Everything in this section is published by DT Swiss. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

DT Swiss makes the RR 411; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.

Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.

Warranty

DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.

ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.

RR 411 Asymmetric Rim Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 18mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.

Symmetric or asymmetric RR 411?

Asymmetric for any geared rear wheel or disc wheel, where the 3mm offset evens out spoke tension. Symmetric for a rim-brake front or a track wheel.

Is the RR 411 tubeless?

Yes. It has a hooked, tubeless-ready bead; the maker's tape and valves are fitted on request.

What tires fit the RR 411?

23 to 32mm. A 25 to 28mm tire is the pairing most of our customers run.

How does the RR 411 compare with the RR 421?

The RR 421 is wider inside (20mm) and disc only; the RR 411 is a little lighter and narrower, and comes in rim-brake and disc versions.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. DT Swiss lists the RR 411 Asymmetric Rim Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.

Which spoke count should I choose?

It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
