DT Swiss RR 521 Disc Brake Rim
The DT Swiss RR 521 is the rim The factory designed to tackle all roads and all surfaces: 32mm deep for wheel stiffness and aero efficiency, 20mm wide inside for the high-volume tires gravel and cyclocross bikes run, welded and tubeless-ready, with the PHR nipple system that makes DT alloy rims light and extremely reliable. The RR 521 is disc only and rated for a system weight up to 130kg.
This page covers the DT Swiss RR 521 Disc Brake Rim in 29in. The RR 521 comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the hub, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.
Design and construction
The factory extrudes the RR 521 from a high-strength aluminum alloy and welds the seam, then smooths it, for the roundest and strongest joint in the range. The 32mm depth gives the wheel lateral stiffness and a semi-aero shape, and the 20mm tubeless-compatible inner width provides a natural fit for 30 to 45mm tires. At around 520 grams it is a touch lighter than the RR 511 despite the wider bed.
The RR 521 uses PHR washers under standard nipples, which spread nipple load in an eyeletless rim and let us build to high tension. Spoke holes are angled to the wheel's dish.
How it rides
An RR 521 wheel is stiff, fast and versatile. On a gravel bike with a 40mm tire it tracks straight through rough sections and does not flex under a hard effort, and the semi-aero depth helps on the long fast stretches between the dirt. On a cyclocross bike with a 33mm tire it makes a strong, precise race wheel. With a 30mm road tire it is a very capable all-road wheel.
For a rider who wants one alloy disc wheelset for road, gravel and cross, the RR 521 is the DT Swiss rim we recommend.

About this listing
Version notes. 29in, 24h, 28h, 32h, about 520g, 20mm inside, 32mm deep, disc. The other sizes and brake versions of the RR 521 have their own listings; this page is for this one.
The disc version of the RR 521 has no brake track, so the sidewall is a plain extrusion that saves a little weight and never wears; it is the one to choose for any disc-brake frame. The rim-brake version, listed separately, has a machined sidewall.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The DT Swiss RR 521 Disc Brake Rim comes in 29in and 24h, 28h, 32h drilling. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the RR 521 on DT 350, 240 and 180 hubs, Bitex BX 106, Hope RS4, White Industries CLD, Industry Nine 1/1 and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray, Laser or D-Light spokes or Aerolite and Competition.
Tire range on the RR 521 is 28 to 45mm. Pick your bike type and weight in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build a wheel around it
Offered for gravel and road disc, track and road single-speed, tandem and e-bike, mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the DT Swiss Rr 521 Disc Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
Testing, standards and warranty at DT Swiss
DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.
Each rim page states a maximum system weight and ASTM classification: the R 460 road rim is rated "Max. System weight 110 kg", "ASTM classification 1" and not approved for e-bikes; the RR 481 is rated 130 kg, ASTM classification 2 and "Approved for e-bikes Yes (max. 32Km/h or max. 250W)".

The figures, certificates and media above are DT Swiss's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the rim.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
DT makes the RR 521; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.
Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.
Warranty
DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.
ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

RR 521 Disc Brake Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 20mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.
What is the difference between the RR 521 and the GR 531?
The RR 521 is 32mm deep and 20mm wide, stiffer and more aero; the GR 531 is shallower, 24mm wide and lighter. For fast gravel and cross the RR 521; for rough gravel and bikepacking the GR 531.
What is the rider weight limit on the RR 521?
DT rates the RR 521 for a system weight (rider, bike and gear) up to 130kg.
Is the RR 521 tubeless?
Yes. It is tubeless-ready with tape and valves, which we fit on request.
What tires fit the RR 521?
28 to 45mm. A 35 to 40mm gravel tire or a 33mm cross tire is what most of our customers run.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Yes. DT Swiss lists the RR 521 Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
Which spoke count should I choose?
It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
