Phil Wood Track Low Flange Fixed Fixed Rear Hub
The Phil Wood track low-flange hub is Phil's classic small-flange track and fixed-gear hub: a 6061 shell machined in San Jose, California, full-contact sealed stainless bearings packed with Phil Waterproof Grease, stainless hardware, bolt-on axles in 100mm front and 120mm rear, and fixed or fixed/free threading on the rear with a lockring. It is the hub for a fixed-gear road bike or a track bike that wants the understated look of a low flange and a hub that never needs attention. This page covers the Phil Wood Track Low Flange Fixed Fixed Rear Hub.
The Phil Wood track low-flange hub is built to order here. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.
Design and construction
Phil Wood's bearings are the point. They are full-contact sealed cartridge bearings, meaning the seal rubs the inner race rather than floating above it, which adds a little drag and keeps water out completely; packed with Phil's own waterproof grease, they run for years in the worst conditions. The touring hub uses a 6061 axle and 6902 bearings, with a Carbonyte low-drag bearing upgrade available, and the shell is machined thick because a touring hub is not where weight is saved. Wide flanges give the rear wheel lateral stiffness under a load.
How it rides
A Phil Wood low-flange track wheel is smooth, silent and permanent. The bearings never need service, the fixed threading holds a cog and lockring for years of skidding, and the low flange gives the wheel a little more compliance than a high-flange hub. It is the Phil hub for fixed-gear street bikes and classic track builds.

Which version this is
Version notes. Rim-brake rotor mount, Bolt On 10x120mm, Bolt On 10x126mm, Bolt On 10x130mm, 28h, 32h, 36h, about 379g, in polished, black. If your frame or fork uses a different standard, the other versions of the track low flange on this site cover it.
This is the rim-brake track low flange, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Phil Wood Track Low Flange Fixed Fixed Rear Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 100mm front and 120mm rear bolt-on spacing, fixed or fixed/free. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most track wheels with DT Champion or Sapim Race and Laser spokes and brass nipples.
It pairs naturally with the H Plus Son Archetype and TB14, Velocity Deep V and Fusion, and any track rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. Pick track or fixed-gear as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build it with us
We build this hub to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the Phil Wood Track Low Flange Fixed Fixed Rear Hub already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for track and road single-speed builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.
Phil Wood's testing and certifications
Phil Wood & Co. states it was founded in 1971 and that its products are “completely designed, manufactured and assembled in San Jose, California”, machined from US-produced materials on CNC machining and turning centers with diamond-tipped tools. The company says a front hub shell passes through seven production stations before assembly, and that it specifies every bearing it uses, many made exclusively to its specifications. It publishes no load, fatigue, salt-spray, or ISO/EN figures.
The warranty page states a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects for the original owner, one year on all bearings, and one year on Classic stainless cassette bodies and Pro aluminum parts; normal wear, contamination, misuse, modification, improper maintenance, and incorrect reassembly are excluded, with proof of purchase required.
current cassette hubs use 5 double-row heat-treated stainless steel pawls on a 40-tooth ratchet ring (earlier 4-pawl, 20-tooth hubs can be upgraded by the service department); Pro cassette bodies are hard-anodized 7075 aluminum; the Pro 11-speed rear hub weighs 331 g. Ratchet wear is excluded from warranty.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Phil Wood makes the track low flange; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.
The configurator shows only rims and spokes that fit the track low flange drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.
Which Phil Wood track rear is this?
This is the low-flange fixed/fixed hub at 379g - about 38g lighter than the high-flange version of the same arrangement. A lower flange gives slightly longer spokes and a marginally more forgiving wheel, which is why a lot of riders prefer it for the road even on a track bike.
Both sides take a fixed cog, so you get two ratios and no freewheel: flip the wheel to change gear. If one side should coast, take the fixed/free version instead.
Warranty
Phil Wood's warranty. Phil Wood & Co. gives the original owner a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, with a one-year guarantee on bearings, stainless cassette bodies and aluminum Pro parts. Proof of purchase from an authorized dealer is required, and bearings that fail from contamination or lack of maintenance are not covered.
ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Track Low Flange Fixed Fixed Rear Hub questions
Can I use this hub with disc brakes?
No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.
Low flange or high flange?
High flanges shorten the spokes for a stiffer wheel and a classic track look; low flanges are lighter and a touch more compliant. Phil makes both.
Fixed or fixed/free?
Fixed for the velodrome and pure fixed-gear riding; fixed/free flips between a fixed cog and a freewheel.
What spacing?
100mm front and 120mm rear, the track standard, with bolt-on axles.
Is the low-flange hub made in the USA?
Yes. Every Phil Wood hub is machined and assembled in San Jose, California.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Phil Wood Track Low Flange Fixed Fixed Rear Hub?
No. Phil Wood makes the hub. ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia that builds it into a finished wheel to your spec.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
Bolt On 10x120mm Rear or Bolt On 10x126mm Rear or Bolt On 10x130mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
