Rolf Prima Ares3 Rim Brake Wheelset

The Rolf Prima Ares3 rim brake wheelset is the lightest configuration of the Ares3, and at 1355 grams for the pair (590g front, 765g rear) it is one of the lightest carbon clinchers you can still buy new for a rim brake bike. Rolf builds it around the same 32mm carbon rim as the disc model, but with a machined brake track, quick release TdF 4.4 hubs and only 16 spokes per wheel.

This is the wheel for the rider who has kept a good rim brake road bike and wants to make it climb better without giving up carbon rim durability. Plenty of riders on older Cervelos, Treks and custom steel frames are in exactly that position, and the Ares3 rim brake set is one of the few current-production carbon wheels still made for them.

Rolf can get away with 16 spokes because of its paired-spoke lacing. Spokes meet the rim in pairs, so each pair's left and right pull balances out at that point on the rim rather than trying to bend the rim between individual spokes. A lighter rim can therefore be built true and stay true with fewer spokes, and fewer spokes are also why the Ares3 rim brake wheel cuts through air better than its shallow depth would suggest.

Design and construction

The rim is a carbon clincher, 32mm deep, 20mm inner width, with a 25mm brake track. It is tubeless compatible and arrives taped. The 32mm profile is Rolf's least crosswind-sensitive Ares depth, which is part of why this wheel is so easy to live with on a light bike.

The Ares3 rim brake hubs are Rolf's TdF 4.4, the rim brake version of the XST 4.4 used on the disc wheels. They are designed and manufactured in the USA, assembled in Eugene, and use Enduro steel cartridge bearings with a ceramic Enduro Zero upgrade available from Rolf. The rear hub carries the T2 high engagement drive: a 48-tooth ring and three sprung steel pawls that Rolf rates as twice as quick to engage as its older 24-tooth design. The freehub body is CNC-machined 6Al-4V titanium in your choice of Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 or Campagnolo N3W.

Spoke count is 16 front and 16 rear, Sapim CX Speed bladed, paired. Axles are standard quick release front and rear. The set ships with Rolf's carbon-specific brake pads and quick release skewers, plus tubeless tape and Rolf's Certainty coverage.

How it rides

The Ares3 rim brake wheelset rides the way a 1355g wheel should: it jumps when you accelerate and it makes long climbs feel shorter. The 16-spoke lacing is stiff enough for sprinting out of corners because paired spokes hold higher tension than a normal 16-spoke wheel could, but this is still a light wheel, and Rolf's own guidance is that heavier or very aggressive riders are better served by the Vigor or the Ares6.

Braking on a carbon rim is different from alloy, and Rolf includes its own pads because generic pads can feel grabby on carbon. Expect a firm, slightly wooden feel that improves as pads bed in, and take it easy on long wet descents. For a rider under about 180 pounds who does hilly road rides, club climbs and mountain events on a rim brake bike, the Ares3 rim brake set is a very good match.

This listing

This listing is the Ares3 Rim Brake Wheelset as Rolf Prima sells it. The choices on this page are driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, Campagnolo N3W. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.

Fit and compatibility

The Ares3 rim brake wheelset only fits rim brake frames with 100mm front and 130mm rear quick release spacing; it has no rotor mount and cannot be converted to disc. Freehub options are Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 and Campagnolo N3W, all titanium. If you are running an 11-speed Shimano cassette the HG body is what you want; a 12-speed SRAM road cassette needs XDR.

Tires: Rolf's chart rates its 20C road rims for 23mm to 32mm tires, with maximum pressure of 110 psi at 23 to 25mm, 100 psi at 28mm and 80 psi at 30 to 32mm. Check your frame's brake caliper and chainstay clearance before going above 28mm on a rim brake bike, since many older frames stop there.

How Rolf Prima tests its wheels

Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.

The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.

Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.

On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.

Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima

The paired-spoke design is why a Rolf wheel looks the way it does, and it is not styling. Grouping the spokes in pairs lets the rim carry fewer, better-supported spoke holes, which is how Rolf builds a stiff wheel at a low spoke count. Trek licensed the technology for a period, which is why riders of a certain vintage recognize the look.

Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder

Rolf Prima builds each Ares3 rim brake wheelset to order in Eugene, Oregon. ProWheelBuilder in Georgia takes the order, confirms the freehub choice matches your drivetrain, and forwards it to Rolf, who laces and tensions the wheels by hand and ships them taped with pads and skewers. We are a wheel shop, not a box mover, so if you are unsure whether N3W or standard Campagnolo is right for your groupset, or whether 28mm tires will clear your calipers, ask us before you buy.

We also build custom rim brake wheels on Astral rims, Rolf's own rim brand, if you want a higher spoke count, a specific hub such as White Industries or Chris King, or a different lacing. We will tell you plainly which option fits your riding and budget better.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. These wheels were built at the factory, not on our bench, so it is the maker's warranty above that stands behind them - our own one-year wheel warranty covers wheels we lace ourselves. If you do need to claim, we will deal with the manufacturer for you.

Ares3 Rim Brake questions

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer?

No. The Ares3 rim brake wheelset is made by Rolf Prima in Eugene, Oregon. ProWheelBuilder resells it, verifies your order and helps you choose the right freehub body. Rolf hand-builds every set.

How much does the Ares3 rim brake wheelset weigh?

Rolf lists 1355g for the pair, 590g front and 765g rear, with 16 spokes per wheel.

Can I run tubeless tires?

Yes. The rim is tubeless compatible and ships taped. You will need tubeless valves and sealant, which Rolf sells as a kit, and tires in the 23mm to 32mm range Rolf specifies for this rim.

What brake pads should I use?

Rolf includes its own carbon-specific pads and recommends them. Do not use pads intended for alloy rims on the carbon brake track.

Why only 16 spokes per wheel?

Paired-spoke lacing lets Rolf balance the pull on the rim at each spoke pair and run higher tension, so a 16-spoke wheel builds as stiff and true as a conventional wheel with more spokes. That is where much of the weight saving comes from.

Is there a disc brake version?

Yes. The Ares3 Disc uses the same 32mm carbon rim without a brake track, XST 4.4 disc hubs with thru-axle options, and 20 spokes per wheel.
