Rolf Prima EOS4 Rim Brake Wheelset

The Rolf Prima Eos4 rim brake wheelset is Rolf's flagship 42mm carbon wheel for caliper-brake road bikes. It combines the Delta-profile carbon rim of the Eos4 Disc with a machined brake track, quick release TdF 7.0 hubs running Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings, and a 14-front, 16-rear paired-spoke lacing. Rolf lists it at 1395 grams (595g front, 800g rear), and every set is built to order in Eugene, Oregon.

It is for the rider who is keeping a top-tier rim brake frame and wants an aero carbon wheel with the best hubs Rolf makes, rather than a discounted older design. If you race or ride hard on a rim brake bike and want a 42mm wheel that is light enough for the hills, the Eos4 rim brake set is the one in Rolf's range to look at.

Paired spokes make the low spoke count possible. Rolf brings spokes to the rim in pairs so that the left and right pull of each pair cancels where it meets the rim, which lets the rim be built true at higher tension with fewer spokes. On the Eos4 rim brake wheelset that means a 14-spoke front wheel that is stiffer than the number suggests and noticeably lighter than a conventional aero wheel.

Design and construction

Rolf builds the Eos4 rim brake wheelset on a carbon clincher rim, 42mm deep, 20mm inner width, Delta profile, with a carbon brake track. It is tubeless compatible and ships taped. The rim shape is the same as the disc Eos4, so crosswind manners are shared; only the brake surface differs.

Hubs are Rolf's TdF 7.0, the quick release version of the XST 7.0. They are designed and manufactured in the USA, assembled in Eugene, finished in Rolf's ballistic armor Cerakote coating and fitted with Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings. The rear carries the T2 high engagement drive, a 48-tooth ring with three sprung steel pawls that Rolf rates as twice as fast to engage as its previous 24-tooth ring. The freehub is CNC-machined 6Al-4V titanium in Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 or Campagnolo N3W.

Spokes are Sapim bladed, a mix of CX-Ray and CX Speed, 14 front and 16 rear, paired. Axles are quick release front and rear. Rolf includes carbon-specific brake pads, a valve extender and quick release skewers with the wheelset.

How it rides

The Eos4 rim brake wheelset is quick everywhere. The 42mm rim holds speed on rollers and into wind, the low weight keeps it lively on climbs, and the ceramic-bearing hubs coast with very little drag. The T2 drive engages almost instantly, which you appreciate most when re-accelerating out of corners in a group. Paired spokes give the 14/16 lacing more stiffness than the count implies, but Rolf still recommends the Vigor or Ares6 for heavier or more aggressive riders.

Braking on the carbon track is firm and consistent with the supplied Rolf pads, with the usual caution in heavy rain. The Eos4 rim brake wheelset suits road racers and fast club riders on rim brake bikes, riders doing rolling centuries, and anyone who wants one aero wheel that still climbs. For pure mountain riding the Eos3 rim brake set is lighter still.

This listing

This listing is the EOS4 Rim Brake Wheelset as Rolf Prima sells it. The choices on this page are driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, Campagnolo N3W. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.

Fit and compatibility

Rim brake frames only, 100mm front and 130mm rear quick release. The Eos4 rim brake wheelset has no rotor mount and cannot be converted to disc. Freehub options are Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 and Campagnolo N3W, all titanium.

Rolf's tire chart rates its 20C road rims for 23mm to 32mm tires, with maximum pressures of 110 psi at 23 to 25mm, 100 psi at 28mm and 80 psi at 30 to 32mm. On a rim brake bike, caliper clearance is usually the practical limit, so measure before ordering anything wider than 28mm. Use tires rated for carbon clinchers.

How Rolf Prima tests its wheels

Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.

The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.

Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.

On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.

Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima

The paired-spoke design is why a Rolf wheel looks the way it does, and it is not styling. Grouping the spokes in pairs lets the rim carry fewer, better-supported spoke holes, which is how Rolf builds a stiff wheel at a low spoke count. Trek licensed the technology for a period, which is why riders of a certain vintage recognize the look.

Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder

Rolf Prima builds each Eos4 rim brake wheelset by hand to order in Eugene, Oregon. ProWheelBuilder in Georgia sells it, confirms that your freehub matches your cassette, and passes the order to Rolf, who ships the set taped with pads, valve extender and skewers. We build wheels every day, so if you are unsure whether N3W or standard Campagnolo is right, or whether the TdF 7.0 hub is worth the step over the Ares4 rim brake set's TdF 4.4, ask us.

We can also build a custom rim brake wheel on Astral rims, Rolf's own rim brand, with a hub and spoke count of your choice.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. This is a complete wheelset built by its manufacturer rather than in our shop, so the maker's warranty above is the one that applies to it. ProWheelBuilder's own one-year wheel warranty covers the wheels we build. We will still handle a manufacturer claim on your behalf.
