Rolf Prima Tandem Road Carbon Wheelset
The Rolf Prima Tandem Road Carbon is Rolf's carbon wheelset for paved-road tandems. It uses the light 32mm carbon profile from Rolf's Ares3, built for the loads of a tandem with 24 paired spokes per wheel and Rolf's XST Tandem Disc hubs. Rolf lists the set at 1555 grams, with a 19mm inner width sized for 25mm to 32mm road tires.
The Tandem Road Carbon is for a team that rides pavement, wants the lowest weight Rolf offers on a tandem, and runs disc brakes. Rolf describes it as the culmination of 15 years of tandem performance and 20 years of paired-spoke refinement, and says it was punished and tested before release.
Paired spokes are essential on a tandem carbon wheel this light. Two riders roughly double the load and torque through the rear wheel, and pairing spokes at the rim cancels the left and right pull so Rolf can run each spoke at higher, more even tension. That is how the Tandem Road Carbon stays true on 24 spokes.
Design and construction
The rim is a full carbon, tubeless-compatible clincher, 32mm deep, 19mm inner width and 27mm at its widest. It ships taped for tubeless. Rolf notes the rim is approved by tire maker IRC for tubeless use with the IRC Formula Pro Tubeless X-Guard 700x28c, and advises checking with your tire manufacturer about tandem tubeless suitability generally.
The hubset is Rolf's XST Tandem Disc: US-made, with Enduro steel cartridge bearings, a CNC-machined 6Al-4V titanium freehub body and the T2 high-engagement drive with a 48-tooth ring and three sprung steel pawls.
The Tandem Road Carbon is laced 24 front and 24 rear with bladed Sapim CX Speed spokes in Rolf's paired pattern, disc only. Front end caps are offered as Boost (15mm or 12mm), 15mm, 12mm or 9mm QR. Rear end caps are offered as Boost 148, Boost 141 QR, 145mm QR, 142mm thru-axle or 135mm QR. Driver bodies on the Tandem Road Carbon: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, N3W and Shimano Micro Spline.
How it rides
The Tandem Road Carbon makes a tandem feel lighter than it is. Getting a team up to speed is easier, climbs are less of a grind, and the 32mm rim is deep enough to help on the flats without being a handful in crosswinds, which matters when the captain is steering for two. The carbon rim also takes some of the road buzz out for the stoker.
Under a tandem's torque the 24-spoke paired build with bladed CX Speed spokes is stiff and direct. This is a road wheel and Rolf is explicit that it is designed for paved applications and 25mm to 32mm tires, so it is not the choice for gravel tandems; the Tandem Carbon AR is. For fast pavement teams, club rides and tandem racing, the Tandem Road Carbon is Rolf's lightest option. Rolf's Certainty program covers it with a five-year warranty and lifetime crash replacement.

About this listing
What you are buying here is the Tandem Road Carbon Wheelset. The choices on this page are front axle: Thru Axle 15x110mm Boost Front, Thru Axle 12x110mm Boost Front, 15mm Thru Axle Front, 12mm Thru Axle Front, 9mm QR Front; rear axle: 148mm Thru Axle Boost Rear, 141mm QR Boost Rear, 145mm QR Rear, 142mm Thru Axle Rear, 135mm QR Rear; driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, Campagnolo N3W, Shimano Micro Spline. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.
Fit and compatibility
The Tandem Road Carbon is 700c and disc only. Front end caps cover Boost 110, 15x100, 12x100 and 9mm QR. Rear options cover Boost 148, Boost 141 QR, 145mm QR, 142x12 and 135 QR, which spans most disc tandem frames of the last decade.
Any of five driver bodies can be fitted: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, N3W or Shimano Micro Spline. Rolf approves 25mm to 32mm tires on the 19mm inner width, and we suggest 28mm as the everyday choice for a tandem. That size is also the one Rolf cites for IRC's tubeless approval on the Tandem Road Carbon.
Testing, standards and warranty at Rolf Prima
Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.
The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.
Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.
On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.
Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima
Rolf still fields service questions on Vector wheelsets with thirty years and more of riding on them. That is the practical case for a company that stayed in one place doing one thing: the wheel is older than a lot of bike shops and can still be sorted out.
Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder
Rolf Prima builds every Tandem Road Carbon to order in Eugene, Oregon. We sell it from ProWheelBuilder in Georgia and confirm the rear spacing, which on tandems can be 135, 142, 145 or 148, against your frame before the order goes to Rolf. We will also check your freehub choice against your cassette. If you are moving from a rim-brake tandem to a disc frame, we can walk you through what changes. Tandem wheels are a small market and we would rather spend ten minutes sorting it out by text or email than see a set go back to Rolf for a different axle.
We also build custom tandem wheels on Astral rims, Rolf Prima's rim brand, if you want a different hub, a 32 or 36-spoke build or a wider rim for a touring tandem.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. These wheels were built at the factory, not on our bench, so it is the maker's warranty above that stands behind them - our own one-year wheel warranty covers wheels we lace ourselves. If you do need to claim, we will deal with the manufacturer for you.
