Rolf Prima Tandem Road Alloy Rim Brake Wheelset

The Rolf Prima Tandem Road Alloy in its rim-brake-compatible form is the tandem wheelset for teams still running caliper or cantilever brakes, or a rim brake up front and a disc drag brake at the rear. It uses the same 32mm deep Delta profile alloy rim as Rolf's Vigor, with a machined brake track, laced 20 front and 24 rear in Rolf's paired pattern to the US-made XST Tandem hubs. Rolf lists the set at 1680 grams.

Rolf calls this wheel the pinnacle of over 15 years of tandem evolution and says it is aerodynamic, handles well in wind, and weighs significantly less than other tandem wheels available. It is for teams who value handling and low weight for general riding or racing on pavement, on a frame that needs a rim brake surface.

Paired-spoke lacing matters most on the rear wheel of a tandem, which carries two riders' torque and most of the load. Pairing spokes at the rim cancels the left and right pull so each spoke can run at higher, more even tension, which is how Rolf keeps a 24-spoke tandem rear true over years of use.

Design and construction

The rim is an aluminum clincher with a brake track, 32mm deep, 20mm inner width and 23mm at its widest, using the Delta profile shape from the Vigor. Rolf lists it as tubeless compatible and ships it taped; Rolf advises checking with your tire manufacturer about tandem tubeless use.

The hubset is Rolf's XST Tandem platform: US-made, Enduro steel cartridge bearings, a CNC-machined 6Al-4V titanium freehub body and the T2 high-engagement drive with a 48-tooth ring and three independently sprung steel pawls. Rolf describes the wheelset as disc and rim brake compatible.

The Tandem Road Alloy is laced with 20 bladed Sapim CX Speed spokes in front and 24 in the rear, paired at the rim. Rolf lists front axle options of Boost (15mm or 12mm), 15mm, 12mm or 9mm QR, and rear options of Boost 148, Boost 141 QR, 145mm QR, 142mm thru-axle or 135mm QR. Driver bodies on the Tandem Road Alloy: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, N3W and Shimano Micro Spline.

How it rides

On the road the Tandem Road Alloy behaves like a Vigor built for two: quick to spin up, steady in crosswinds thanks to the 32mm Delta profile, and stiff enough under a tandem sprint that the rear wheel does not wind up. The machined alloy brake track gives consistent rim braking, and the T2 drive engages promptly when the team gets back on the power after a corner.

Rolf approves this wheel for 25mm to 32mm tires and paved riding. It is not a gravel or loaded touring wheel; for dirt, Rolf's Tandem Carbon AR is the choice. Where the Tandem Road Alloy fits is the classic road tandem: club rides, centuries and racing, on a frame with rim brakes or a mixed rim and drag brake setup, where a light, aero alloy wheel makes a real difference.

This version

This page is the Tandem Road Alloy Rim Brake Wheelset itself, not a custom build. The choices on this page are front axle: Thru Axle 15x110mm Boost Front, Thru Axle 12x110mm Boost Front, 15mm Thru Axle Front, 12mm Thru Axle Front, 9mm QR Front; rear axle: 148mm Thru Axle Boost Rear, 141mm QR Rear, 145mm QR Rear, 142mm Thru Axle Rear, 135mm QR Rear; driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, Campagnolo N3W, Shimano Micro Spline. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.

Fit and compatibility

The Tandem Road Alloy is 700c. Rolf lists front end caps for Boost 110, 15x100, 12x100 and 9mm QR, and rear options for Boost 148, Boost 141 QR, 145mm QR, 142x12 and 135 QR. Because rim-brake tandem frames vary widely in dropout style and spacing, we confirm your frame's exact requirements with you and with Rolf before the order is built.

Five driver bodies are offered: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, N3W and Shimano Micro Spline. Rolf approves 25mm to 32mm tires on the 20mm inner width; we suggest 28mm for most teams. Rolf's Certainty program covers the Tandem Road Alloy with a five-year warranty and lifetime crash replacement.

What Rolf Prima says about testing

Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.

The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.

Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.

On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.

Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima

The Vigor is Rolf's longest-running profile and their best seller, and the ES version has been a staple of triathlon wheel choices for fifteen years. A rim shape that survives that long in a market this faddish is usually telling you something.

Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder

Rolf Prima builds each Tandem Road Alloy to order in Eugene, Oregon. We sell it from ProWheelBuilder in Georgia. Rim-brake tandems are the frames where spacing and dropout questions come up most often, so when your order arrives we ask for your frame make, model and rear spacing and confirm the build with Rolf before anything is laced. If your tandem uses a rear drag brake alongside rim brakes, tell us that too, since it affects the hub configuration.

We also build custom rim-brake tandem wheels on Astral rims, Rolf Prima's rim brand, including 36 or 40-spoke rears for heavy touring loads, if the factory Tandem Road Alloy is not the right match.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. This is a complete wheelset built by its manufacturer rather than in our shop, so the maker's warranty above is the one that applies to it. ProWheelBuilder's own one-year wheel warranty covers the wheels we build. We will still handle a manufacturer claim on your behalf.
