Rolf Prima Vigor FX Wheelset

The Rolf Prima Vigor FX is Rolf's aluminum track and fixed-gear wheelset, built on the 32mm deep aero alloy rim of the Vigor, and offered here as a closeout. Rolf pairs the rim with its US-made, fully CNC-machined high-flange track hubs and paired-spoke lacing, 16 spokes front and 20 rear. Rolf lists the set at 1745 grams.

Rolf pitches the Vigor FX for the velodrome, for ripping around town on a fast fixed gear, and for training, racing or urban riding in general. It is for the fixed-gear rider who wants a hand-built aero wheel with an aluminum rim that takes street abuse and can be trued at any shop, on hubs that are made in the USA. It has been in Rolf's line for years and is the least expensive way into a Rolf track wheel.

Paired spokes give the Vigor FX its stiffness at a low spoke count. Pairing spokes at the rim cancels the left and right pull, so each spoke runs at higher, more even tension than a conventional lacing. That is how a 16-spoke front and 20-spoke rear hold up to standing starts, skid stops and the torque of a fixed drivetrain.

Design and construction

The rim is a 32mm deep aluminum clincher with a 20mm inner width and 22mm at its widest, the same aero profile Rolf has used on the Vigor for two decades. The Vigor FX rim is listed by Rolf as tubeless compatible, and the wheels arrive with rim strips fitted.

Rolf machines the Vigor FX hubs itself in the USA: fully CNC-machined high-flange track hubs, with a rear threaded for either a fixed cog with lockring or a threaded freewheel. Spacing is 120mm, the axles are solid, and Rolf supplies the frame bolts.

Spokes are 16 front and 20 rear, bladed Sapim CX Speed, paired at the rim. There is no disc mount and no freehub; the Vigor FX is a track and fixed-gear wheelset. In the box with the Vigor FX are rim strips, frame bolts and Rolf's Certainty program coverage: five-year warranty and lifetime crash replacement.

How it rides

The Vigor FX rides like the road Vigor with a fixed cog: quick to accelerate, steady in crosswinds because 32mm is a modest depth, and stiff under a hard jump thanks to the high-flange hubs and paired spokes. On the street the alloy rim is the practical choice; it dents rather than cracks when you hit a pothole at speed, and any shop can true it.

On the track the Vigor FX is a solid training and racing wheel. It is not as fast as the deeper Ares4 FX or Eos6 FX, but on a windy outdoor velodrome the shallower rim is easier to handle. The 20mm inner width takes 25mm to 32mm tires, so a commuter can run 28s for comfort and a racer can drop to 25s. The 1745 gram weight is honest for an alloy track set with solid axles, and the Vigor FX gives up little to lighter wheels on a velodrome where aerodynamics and stiffness matter more than grams.

What this page sells

About this Vigor FX Wheelset listing. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.

Fit and compatibility

The Vigor FX is 700c with 120mm rear spacing and solid axles with frame bolts, which fits standard track frames and fixed-gear street frames with horizontal or track dropouts. Front spacing is 100mm. The rear takes a fixed cog and lockring or a threaded freewheel.

Rolf's approved tire range for the Vigor FX is 25mm to 32mm on the 20mm inner width. On the track we would run 25mm; on the street 28mm, or 32mm on rough pavement.

Rolf Prima's testing and certifications

Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.

The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.

Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.

On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.

Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima

Rolf Prima builds by hand in Eugene, Oregon. Hand-built at the factory means what it means here, that each wheel is tensioned and trued by a person rather than released by a machine, which is why we are comfortable selling them beside the wheels we build ourselves.

Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder

Rolf Prima builds each Vigor FX to order in Eugene, Oregon, and we sell it from ProWheelBuilder in Georgia. Because the Vigor FX is a closeout, we confirm availability with Rolf when your order comes in and check that your frame's rear spacing is 120mm. We can also supply a cog, lockring or freewheel to match the Vigor FX if you tell us your gearing, and we will fit them before shipping if you ask.

We also build custom fixed-gear and track wheels on Astral rims, Rolf Prima's rim brand, if you want a flip-flop hub, a 32-spoke build for daily commuting, or a specific rim depth.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. Because this wheelset comes assembled from its maker, the warranty that applies is theirs, set out above; ProWheelBuilder's one-year wheel warranty is for wheels we build here. Either way, a claim goes through us and we will manage it.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
