Sapim 16MM 12 Gauge Silver Brass Nipple
The Sapim 16mm 12-gauge brass nipple is the nipple for the heaviest spokes we sell: a silver brass nipple with a larger wrench flat and a 2.6mm thread for the 12-gauge Sapim Leader spoke, 16mm long, made in Belgium. It goes into wheelchair, cargo trike, pedicab and industrial wheels whose rims are drilled for 12-gauge nipples, and it is built to take the tension those wheels run at. This page covers the Sapim 16MM 12 Gauge Silver Brass Nipple.
We sell 12-gauge nipples only as part of a wheel we build. Choose your rim, hub and spokes in the configurator and the wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
Twelve-gauge spokes are a different world from bicycle spokes. The rims that take them are drilled with larger holes, the hubs have flanges thick enough to seat a 2.6mm elbow, and the nipples are 12 gauge with a larger flat that needs its own spoke wrench. Sapim makes the 12-gauge nipple in brass only, because brass does not round off under the higher torque a 12-gauge wheel is tensioned to and does not corrode on a wheelchair that lives outdoors. The 16mm length suits the heavy-duty rims these wheels use.
How it rides
A wheel on 12-gauge Leaders and 12-gauge brass nipples is about as stiff and unbreakable as a spoked wheel gets. It is not a bicycle-feel wheel; it is a load-carrying wheel, and on a cargo trike or a wheelchair that is exactly right.
We build most 12-gauge wheels with 36 spokes in a three-cross pattern on a steel or heavy alloy rim drilled for 12-gauge nipples, and we tension them higher than a bicycle wheel because the loads are higher and the tire pressures lower. The 12-gauge brass nipple takes that tension without complaint, and because it is brass it will still turn in a spoke wrench ten years later, which on a wheelchair or a cargo trike that lives outdoors is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

This listing
This listing is the brass 12-gauge 16mm version. Brass is the one to choose for durability, salt and carbon rims; it does not corrode, does not round off and turns in a spoke wrench a decade later. It is the heavier option by roughly 30 grams a wheel, and that is the whole of its downside. Brass also deforms very slightly as it seats, which lets it bed into the rim bed and sit square, and it is far more forgiving of a spoke key that is a size out or an owner who tensions a wheel without much feel. Unless a build is chasing grams or a specific color, this is what we fit, and it is what we fit on every wheel that will see winter.
This is the plain-thread version, without a locking patch. It turns freely, which is what you want when a wheel is going to be tensioned, stress-relieved and re-trued several times, and it is the one to reach for if you expect to adjust the wheel yourself. Pair it with spoke prep if you want some of the same security.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Sapim 16MM 12 Gauge Silver Brass Nipple fits the 2.6mm thread of the 12-gauge Sapim Leader and any rim drilled for 12-gauge nipples; the configurator pairs it with the 12-gauge Leader automatically and only with rims that take it. We keep the 12-gauge spoke wrench in the shop.
What goes into a Sapim nipple
Sapim's Polyax head is the part worth understanding. A spoke almost never leaves the hub at a right angle to the rim; it arrives at the nipple at a slight angle, and with an ordinary nipple that angle has to be absorbed by bending the spoke right where it is weakest, at the thread. The Polyax head is rounded so the nipple can sit at that angle instead, keeping the spoke and the nipple in line. It is a small piece of geometry that removes a stress riser from the most common place spokes break.
Brass or alloy is a real decision rather than a color choice. Brass is heavier, turns more sweetly under a spoke key, and resists corrosion and rounding far better, so it is what we use on anything that will see winter, salt or hard mileage. Alloy saves a few grams per wheel and comes in colors, and it is a sound choice on a light, well-cared-for build. We will tell you honestly when the weight saving is not worth it.
Manufacturing detail is the maker's own account; any load figures above are measurements, not marketing. Which one goes into your wheel is our call, and we are happy to talk it through.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Sapim makes the 12 gauge brass; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Every 12 gauge brass wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.
In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Sapim Nipples warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Sapim Nipples and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

16MM 12 Gauge Silver Brass Nipple questions
Brass or alloy - which should I pick?
Brass, unless you have a specific reason not to. It is about 30 grams a wheel heavier and that is the whole cost; in exchange it does not corrode against a steel spoke, it does not round off under a slightly worn spoke key, and it will still turn years later when someone needs to true the wheel. Every wheel we build for winter or for high mileage leaves on brass.
Should I take the plain nipple or the locking one?
The plain nipple turns freely however many times you tension and re-true the wheel, which is what you want if you maintain your own wheels or expect the build to be adjusted. The locking version, listed separately, adds a thread-locking patch that resists a nipple backing off by itself - worth it on low spoke counts and on wheels that see constant vibration. We will fit either; tell us how the wheel gets used.
Which spokes take the 12-gauge nipple?
The 2.6mm 12-gauge Sapim Leader; it does not fit 14-gauge 2.0mm spokes.
Which rims take 12-gauge nipples?
Heavy-duty wheelchair, cargo and industrial rims drilled for them; a standard bicycle rim is drilled for 14-gauge nipples.
Why brass only?
Brass does not round off under the higher torque a 12-gauge wheel is tensioned to and does not corrode outdoors.
Which wheels use them?
Wheelchairs, cargo trikes, pedicabs, heavy trailers and industrial wheels; anything where the payload is far beyond a bicycle's.
Do the nipples match the rim?
Yes. The configurator only offers nipple types the chosen rim accepts (external or internal), in the finish you pick.
