Sapim Polyax 14MM 14 Gauge Brass Nipple

The Sapim Polyax is the nipple we fit to most of the wheels we build, and it is worth a page because the nipple is the part of a wheel most people never think about and the part that decides whether the spokes last. A Polyax has a rounded, spherical seat where a conventional nipple has a flat one, which lets the nipple tilt a few degrees in the rim hole so the spoke runs straight into it rather than bending at the rim. That small thing removes the stress riser that breaks spokes at the nipple, and it is why Sapim recommends the Polyax for every rim with angled or unangled spoke holes. Sapim makes it in Belgium in brass and alloy, 14 gauge, 14mm long, in silver, black and colors. This page covers the Sapim Polyax 14MM 14 Gauge Brass Nipple.

We sell Polyax nipples only as part of a wheel we build. Choose your rim, hub and spokes in the configurator and the wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

A spoke leaves a hub flange at an angle and arrives at the rim at a slightly different one, and on most rims the nipple hole is drilled straight through, so a conventional nipple sits square to the rim and the spoke has to bend to meet it. The Polyax seat is a section of a sphere; it rocks in a matching countersink or against a washer until the spoke is straight, and the load passes through the nipple in a line rather than at a kink. Sapim also puts a thread-lock compound on some versions and cuts the threads to run smoothly on its rolled spoke threads.

Brass Polyax nipples are the durable choice: brass does not corrode, does not round off under a spoke wrench after years, and is kind to a carbon rim bed. Alloy Polyax nipples save about 30 grams a wheel and come in colors, and they are the right choice on a light wheel that is kept clean. Both are 14 gauge for 2.0mm spoke threads; Sapim also makes 12mm, 16mm and internal versions.

How it rides

You do not feel a nipple, but you feel a spoke that breaks, and a wheel built with Polyax nipples on the right seat breaks fewer spokes over its life than one built with flat-seat nipples on the same rim. That is the whole argument, and it is why we use them by default on Sapim, DT Swiss and Pillar spokes alike.

Brass for touring, trail, gravel, e-bike and carbon-rim wheels; alloy for road race and cross-country wheels where the last grams matter.

Which version this is

This listing is the brass 14-gauge 14mm version. Brass is the one to choose for durability, salt and carbon rims; it does not corrode, does not round off and turns in a spoke wrench a decade later. It is the heavier option by roughly 30 grams a wheel, and that is the whole of its downside. Brass also deforms very slightly as it seats, which lets it bed into the rim bed and sit square, and it is far more forgiving of a spoke key that is a size out or an owner who tensions a wheel without much feel. Unless a build is chasing grams or a specific color, this is what we fit, and it is what we fit on every wheel that will see winter.

This is the plain-thread version, without a locking patch. It turns freely, which is what you want when a wheel is going to be tensioned, stress-relieved and re-trued several times, and it is the one to reach for if you expect to adjust the wheel yourself. Pair it with spoke prep if you want some of the same security.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Sapim Polyax 14MM 14 Gauge Brass Nipple fits any 2.0mm-threaded 14-gauge spoke and any rim drilled for 14-gauge nipples; the rounded seat works with a countersunk rim hole or with a Sapim washer on a flat one. The configurator offers brass or alloy Polyax nipples for every build and recommends brass for carbon rims and heavy-duty wheels.

Sapim nipples, and how we choose them

Sapim's Polyax head is the part worth understanding. A spoke almost never leaves the hub at a right angle to the rim; it arrives at the nipple at a slight angle, and with an ordinary nipple that angle has to be absorbed by bending the spoke right where it is weakest, at the thread. The Polyax head is rounded so the nipple can sit at that angle instead, keeping the spoke and the nipple in line. It is a small piece of geometry that removes a stress riser from the most common place spokes break.

Washers matter more than people expect on carbon and on thin-walled rims: a concave or flat washer spreads the nipple's load over a wider area of the rim bed and lets the nipple seat square. We stock the Sapim washers alongside the nipples because on some rims we will not build without them.

Manufacturing detail is the maker's own account; any load figures above are measurements, not marketing. Which one goes into your wheel is our call, and we are happy to talk it through.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Sapim makes the Polyax in Belgium; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We fit Polyax nipples to spokes cut from the measured ERD of the rim, bring the wheel up in stages with a gauge, stress-relieve it and true it before it ships, and we use a four-sided spoke wrench that does not round nipples.

The configurator offers the nipple choice on every build and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Sapim Nipples warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Sapim Nipples and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.

Polyax 14MM 14 Gauge Brass Nipple questions

Brass or alloy - which should I pick?

Brass, unless you have a specific reason not to. It is about 30 grams a wheel heavier and that is the whole cost; in exchange it does not corrode against a steel spoke, it does not round off under a slightly worn spoke key, and it will still turn years later when someone needs to true the wheel. Every wheel we build for winter or for high mileage leaves on brass.

Should I take the plain nipple or the locking one?

The plain nipple turns freely however many times you tension and re-true the wheel, which is what you want if you maintain your own wheels or expect the build to be adjusted. The locking version, listed separately, adds a thread-locking patch that resists a nipple backing off by itself - worth it on low spoke counts and on wheels that see constant vibration. We will fit either; tell us how the wheel gets used.

Brass or alloy Polyax?

Brass for durability, corrosion resistance and carbon rims; alloy for about 30 grams saved per wheel and colors on a race wheel that is kept clean.

What does the rounded seat do?

It lets the nipple tilt in the rim hole so the spoke runs straight into it, removing the bend at the rim that breaks spokes.

Which spokes take Polyax nipples?

Any 14-gauge spoke with a 2.0mm thread: Sapim, DT Swiss, Pillar and others.

What length Polyax do I need?

14mm is the standard for most rims; 12mm for thin single-wall rims and 16mm for deep rims. The configurator picks the length for the rim you choose.

Do the nipples match the rim?

Yes. The configurator only offers nipple types the chosen rim accepts (external or internal), in the finish you pick.
