Sapim Leader J Bend 12G OR 2.6mm Spokes
The Sapim Leader in 12 gauge is the heavy one: a 2.6mm straight-gauge stainless spoke for wheels that carry serious weight, from cargo trikes and wheelchairs to industrial and pedicab wheels. It is cold-forged in Belgium from Sapim's 18/8 stainless with rolled threads, and it needs 12-gauge nipples and a rim drilled for them, which the configurator handles.
This page covers the J-bend 2.6mm Sapim Leader J Bend 12G OR 2.6mm Spokes. We sell Leader spokes only as part of a wheel we build, cut to the exact length the rim and hub call for. Choose your rim, hub and nipples in the configurator and the wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
A 2.6mm spoke has about 70% more cross-section than a 2.0mm spoke, which is why the 12-gauge Leader is the choice when a normal spoke would fatigue under the load. The head and elbow are cold-forged, the thread is rolled, and it takes 12-gauge brass nipples in a rim drilled for them; most heavy-duty cargo and wheelchair rims are, and the configurator only pairs it with those.
Sapim makes the 12-gauge Leader in silver, J-bend, in the lengths cargo and industrial wheels need.
Twelve-gauge Sapim Leader spokes are a different world from bicycle spokes. The rims that take them are drilled with larger holes, often with reinforced eyelets, and the hubs have flanges thick enough to seat a 2.6mm elbow; wheelchair hubs, cargo trike hubs, industrial and pedicab hubs are the usual partners. The nipples are 12 gauge too, with a larger wrench flat, and the whole wheel is built to a higher tension than a bicycle wheel because the loads are higher and the tire pressures lower. We keep 12-gauge nipples and the right spoke wrench in the shop for exactly this work.
How it rides
A wheel on 12-gauge Leaders is about as stiff and unbreakable as a spoked wheel gets. It is not a bicycle-feel wheel; it is a load-carrying wheel, and on a cargo trike or a wheelchair that is exactly right.
Where a 14-gauge spoke would eventually fatigue at the elbow under a 150kg payload, the 12-gauge Leader simply does not, and that is the whole argument for it. The trade is weight, which does not matter on a wheelchair or a cargo trike, and ride feel, which is not the point.
We build most 12-gauge Leader wheels with 36 spokes in a three-cross pattern, which spreads the load across as many spokes as the hub allows and keeps each one well within its fatigue limit. On a wheelchair that means a wheel that stays true through years of curbs and transfers; on a cargo trike it means a wheel that carries a week of groceries and two children without a thought. The rim is usually a steel or heavy alloy 12-gauge-drilled touring or wheelchair rim, and the hub a purpose-made wheelchair or trike hub with a thick flange.

This version
This listing is the J-bend version in 12g straight gauge. A J-bend spoke has the elbow formed into the head and drops through a drilled flange, which is the older and far more common pattern. It fits almost any hub, replacements can be found in any decent shop anywhere in the world, and the elbow is the part that eventually fails - which is why it is seated properly and the wheel stress-relieved before it leaves us. If your hub has drilled flanges, this is the one you want.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Sapim Leader J Bend 12G OR 2.6mm Spokes is cut to length for your build; the configurator reads the rim's ERD and the hub's flange dimensions and works out the length. It needs a hub with 2.6mm flange holes and a rim drilled for 12-gauge nipples, which the configurator enforces.
We pair 12-gauge Leader spokes with 12-gauge brass nipples, always. If your rim or hub is not in the catalog, text us; we build a lot of these to measure.
How Sapim makes its spokes
Sapim has been drawing spoke wire in Belgium since 1918, and the range is built around one idea: the same wire and the same head, drawn to different middles. A Leader is 2.0 mm all the way through. A Race is 2.0 mm at the ends and 1.8 mm in the middle. A Laser takes the middle down to 1.5 mm. A CX-Ray is a Laser that has then been flat-forged into a blade, which is why it is light and aerodynamic without being a fragile spoke. Every one of them keeps a full-diameter head and thread, because those are the two places a spoke actually fails.
The butted middle is not about saving weight so much as giving the spoke somewhere to stretch. A thinner mid-section elongates more for the same tension, so it holds that tension through pot-holes and hard corners instead of going slack and loosening the nipple. That is why a well-built wheel on Laser or Race spokes often stays true longer than the same wheel built with plain-gauge spokes, and it is why we reach for a butted spoke on almost every build where the rider's weight allows it.
Some years ago a graduate student at Georgia Tech pulled five spokes to failure on a tensile tester, five samples of each, for Snyder Cycles. Snyder has since closed; we asked for permission to use the footage and were given it. It is worth more than a test we could run ourselves, because nobody in it was selling spokes. The averages line up like this: Sapim Race 303.15 kgf, Sapim Leader 299.37 kgf, DT Swiss Champion 289.80 kgf, DT Swiss Competition 276.95 kgf. The two pairs worth reading are the like-for-like ones. Among the plain-gauge 2.0 mm spokes, Sapim Leader averaged about 3% above DT Champion, and its weakest sample still pulled higher than DT's strongest. Among the double-butted spokes, Sapim Race averaged about 9% above DT Competition. Where they broke is as interesting as the number: the Race failed at the J-bend head, which is where a spoke is expected to go, while the Competition failed at the outer butting transition.
An independent spoke strength test
ProWheelBuilder's part is picking the right spoke for the wheel and lacing it, and we will tell you honestly which one we would use.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Sapim makes the Leader 12 gauge; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.
The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Sapim Spokes warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Sapim Spokes and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Leader J Bend 12G OR 2.6mm Spokes questions
Should I take this in J-bend or straight-pull?
Whichever your hub takes - it is decided by the hub, not by preference. A J-bend spoke drops through a drilled flange and is what the large majority of hubs use, which also makes a replacement easy to find anywhere. If your hub holds the spoke head directly with no drilling, you need the straight-pull Leader 12 gauge, which is a separate listing.
Can I use 12-gauge Leader spokes on a normal bicycle rim?
No. A standard rim is drilled for 14-gauge nipples; the 2.6mm Leader needs a rim and hub made for 12-gauge spokes, which the configurator enforces.
Which wheels use the 12-gauge Sapim Leader?
Wheelchairs, cargo trikes, pedicabs, heavy trailers and industrial wheels: anything where the payload is far beyond what a bicycle wheel carries.
Is the 12-gauge Leader stainless?
Yes, the same 18/8 stainless as every Sapim spoke, cold-forged in Belgium with rolled threads.
Silver or black Leader?
Sapim makes the 12-gauge Leader in silver.
Do I choose the spoke length?
No. The configurator calculates the length from the rim's ERD and the hub's flange geometry; we cut and thread the spokes here.
Which spoke should I pick?
The configurator recommends a spoke from your bike type, rider weight and rim; a stronger spoke is offered when the build calls for it.
