Surly Clown Royal Rim
The widest rim Surly make, and the only one built for a 6.2in tire. At 100mm across and 24in in diameter, the Clown Royal exists to do one thing: carry the Molenda on a Moonlander and float over ground that stops everything else. Surly call it “a key ingredient to the Moonlander's proprietary wheel system”. Surly design and manufacture the rim; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer.
We sell it as a finished wheel: choose the hub, spokes and nipples and we lace, tension and true it by hand here.
Design and construction
It is a welded alloy rim with a tubeless-ready bed, and tubeless tape is included in the box. Surly describe two features that do the structural work: “extruded channels next to each bead add strength, while cutouts help keep the weight to a minimum”. That is the trade a 100mm rim has to make — at this width the section is enormous, so material has to come out somewhere that is not carrying load.
It is symmetrical, not offset, so the spoke bed sits on the centerline and both sides of the wheel are dished the same way.
How it rides
This is a flotation rim, not a light one. A 100mm bed holds the 6.2in Molenda open to its full volume, which is the entire point: Surly say it “maxes out tire volume for the Moonlander's frame, helping the bike achieve ultimate flotation and traction over previously unridden terrain”. On soft sand and deep snow that width is what keeps you on top rather than in it.
On hardpack it is what you would expect from the widest rim in the catalog — there is a lot of wheel out there, and it is honest about that.

About this listing
This is the rim on its own, as a component of a hand-built wheel. We build it around the hub you choose.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
One size: 24in, ISO 507, 32 hole, disc only — there is no rim-brake version and no other drilling. Surly design it specifically around the 6.2in Molenda, and the Moonlander is the frame with clearance for the result.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
Build it into a wheel
This rim is live in our Custom Wheel Program for fat bike builds. Start a build with the Surly Clown Royal and the configurator opens with this rim pinned, ready for you to choose the hub, drilling, spokes and nipples — and it validates each choice against the rest as you go.
Warranty at Surly
Surly give a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of retail purchase, with the usual exclusions for improper assembly, modification, competitive use and normal wear. Surly publish no test data, tension limit or bead-profile figure for this rim, so we do not quote one.
ProWheelBuilder does not test rims. We report what Surly publish and build to it.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Spoke length comes from the measured hub and this rim's real ERD of 500, not a catalog average — and on a 100mm rim that matters more than usual, because the bracing angle is unlike anything else you will build. Every wheel is laced, tensioned and trued by hand in Georgia.
A 24in fat wheel is a specific thing to build. If you are not sure which hub suits the frame, call before you order.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Surly warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Surly and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Clown Royal Rim questions
What tire does it take?
Surly build it around the 6.2in Molenda and say it is designed exclusively for that tire. It is not a general-purpose fat rim.
What bike is it for?
The Moonlander. Surly describe the rim as part of that bike's wheel system, and the frame is what has clearance for a 6.2in tire on a 100mm rim.
Is it tubeless?
Yes — the bed is tubeless-ready and Surly include the tape. We fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
Offset or symmetrical?
Symmetrical. The spoke bed is on the centerline.
Can I have straight-pull spokes?
Yes. That is decided by the hub you choose, not by the rim.
Why is the photo a placeholder?
We photograph our own products rather than reuse supplier images, and this one has not been through the studio yet. The specs above are the ones we build to.
