Velocity Fat Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub

This page covers the Velocity Fat Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub.

It is priced so the budget can go into a good rim.

The Velocity Fat hub is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The Standard ATB hubshell is machined from aluminum with conventional J-bend flanges and an ISO 6-bolt rotor mount. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, so replacement years down the line is a ten-minute job with a bearing press.

Because the front Fat has no freehub, it is the hub that asks for the least: a spin of the axle to check the bearings once a season and nothing else. The flanges, bearings and seals are the same as the rear's, the axle converts between the front standards with end caps, and the rotor mounts the same way. Choose it to match a rear of the same model, or on its own for a fork that needs a new front wheel.

How it rides

It is a trail and winter fat-bike hub; for fat e-bikes we would recommend a heavier-duty hub.

On the road or the trail the front hub's job is to disappear: spin freely, keep water out, and hold the flanges still so the wheel tracks where you point it. The front Fat does that with the same bearings and seals as the rear and none of the rear's complexity, and because a front wheel carries less load and no torque it stays true longer than the rear on the same rim. When the rear finally needs a look, the front usually does not.

This version

This version is the 6-bolt hub in Thru Axle 15x150mm, drilled for 32h, about 260g, in black. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Fat; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.

Six-bolt is the original disc mount and still the most universal: any ISO 6-bolt rotor from any brand bolts straight on, rotors are cheap and easy to find anywhere, and the six-bolt flange is a robust, simple interface that has been on mountain bikes for twenty-five years. Centerlock rotors do not fit it.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Fat hub wheels with Sapim Race or DT Competition spokes and brass nipples.

It pairs with the DT Swiss BR 710, Sun Ringle Mulefut, Surly and HED fat rims in the catalog. Pick fat bike as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern for the offset.

Put it in a custom wheel

How Velocity tests its hubs

Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use.

Warranty matches all Velocity products: defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, excluding normal wear and tear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly or maintenance; repair or replacement at Velocity's discretion.

Sources on Velocity's site:

Velocity publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the hub into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Velocity makes the Fat; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.

ProWheelBuilder. Wheels we build around this part are covered by our own one-year warranty alongside the maker's. Within the year: broken spokes replaced regardless of cause, and the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning or a complete rebuild - included. A manufacturer-covered rim or hub failure is a claim we make and manage for you; one they will not cover is answered with an eligible replacement at 25% off retail. Shipping each way is yours. Parts you supply yourself fall outside it.

Fat Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the 6-bolt version: any ISO 6-bolt rotor bolts straight on with six T25 bolts, which is still the most common and the easiest rotor to replace anywhere. Centerlock rotors do not fit it - for those, take the centerlock version of the same hub, listed separately.

What spacing is the Velocity Fat hub?

150 x 15mm thru-axle front and 197 x 12mm thru-axle rear, the current fat-bike standards.

Is the Fat hub e-bike rated?

No. For fat e-bikes choose a heavier-duty hub such as a DT Swiss 350 Big Ride.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Velocity Fat Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub?

We are not. Velocity manufactures the hub; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

Thru Axle 15x150mm Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Does it need special spokes?

No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.

How long will the wheel take?

Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. The estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out.
