DT Swiss GR 531 Disc Brake Rim

The DT Swiss GR 531 is the lighter of DT Swiss's two alloy gravel rims, and the one we build most often. The GR 531 has a 24mm inner width, a sleeved joint, a tubeless-ready bead and a weight that keeps a gravel wheelset feeling quick on the climbs. The factory designed the GR 531 for gravel, bikepacking and cyclocross with tires from 35 to 53mm, and it does all three well.

This page covers the DT Swiss GR 531 Disc Brake Rim in 29in, 27.5in. The GR 531 is built to order here. Choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.

Design and construction

The GR 531 is extruded from its own aluminum alloy and joined with a precision sleeve, which holds the joint in alignment and gives the rim a long fatigue life. The 24mm inner width squares up a 40mm gravel tire nicely and still works with a 33mm cyclocross tire. The section is shallower and the walls thinner than the G 540, which is where the weight saving comes from.

The GR 531 bead is DT Swiss's tubeless profile, seats with a floor pump on most tires, and seals with the tubeless tape and valves. The rim takes standard nipples with no proprietary washers. Spoke holes are angled to suit the wheel's dish, which keeps nipple stress even and makes the GR 531 easy to build to high, uniform tension.

How it rides

On a GR 531 a gravel bike feels lively. The rim is light enough that the wheel spins up quickly, and stiff enough laterally that it does not wander when you stand on the pedals. With a 40mm tire set up tubeless at moderate pressure it takes washboard and loose gravel in its stride.

The GR 531 is not the rim for a heavily loaded touring bike or a rider who keeps denting rims on rocky descents; the deeper G 540 is the answer there. For gravel racing, cyclocross and everyday mixed-surface riding the GR 531 is the DT Swiss alloy rim we recommend first.

Which version this is

What this listing covers: the GR 531 in 29in, 27.5in with 28h, 32h drilling, about 535g, 24mm inside, 25mm deep, disc. If you need it in another size or for the other brake type, it is listed separately.

This is the disc-brake GR 531: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The DT Swiss GR 531 Disc Brake Rim comes in 29in, 27.5in and 28h, 32h drilling. It is a disc-brake rim with no braking surface. We build the GR 531 on DT 350, 240 and 180 hubs, Bitex BX 106, Hope RS4, White Industries CLD, Industry Nine 1/1 and Hydra, and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim Laser, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or Competition and Aerolite.

Tire range on the GR 531 is 35 to 53mm. Tell the configurator your bike type and weight and it suggests a spoke count and lacing pattern to suit.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for gravel and road disc, track and road single-speed, tandem and e-bike, mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the DT Swiss Gr 531 Disc Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

DT Swiss's testing and certifications

DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.

Each rim page states a maximum system weight and ASTM classification: the R 460 road rim is rated "Max. System weight 110 kg", "ASTM classification 1" and not approved for e-bikes; the RR 481 is rated 130 kg, ASTM classification 2 and "Approved for e-bikes Yes (max. 32Km/h or max. 250W)".

Certifications

  • ISO 4210 / ASTM F 2043 — DT Swiss states its internal factory standard 'ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)' and sets test parameters by ASTM F 2043 riding conditions (self-declared, no certificate published) (source)
  • ASTM classification per rim — R 460: ASTM classification 1, max system weight 110 kg, not e-bike approved; RR 481: ASTM classification 2, max system weight 130 kg, approved for e-bikes (max. 32 km/h or max. 250 W) (source)
  • UCI approved wheels — UCI list version 2024.10.02 lists DT Swiss complete wheels, e.g. ARC 1100 DICUT 700C 38 SPO (02.05.2024), GRC 1100/1400 DI 700C CL 30 and CL 50, AR/ER 1600 SP and A/E 1800 SP 700C/650B CL 30, ARC 1100/1400 DI 700C CL 38 (all 13.06.2024); earlier ARC/ERC/PRC/GRC models 2016-2023. Component rims are not listed individually (source)
  • Warranty — 24 months legal warranty on all products; lifetime warranty for first owners of carbon component rims bought after 1 March 2025; Fair-Share crash replacement for carbon rims available 10 years after purchase (source)

DT Swiss publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

DT makes the GR 531; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.

The configurator shows only hubs and spokes that match the GR 531 drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.

ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

GR 531 Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

24mm inside is the all-road and gravel width. Think 32 to 45mm tires: wide enough to support a gravel casing properly so it holds its shape at low pressure, narrow enough that a 30mm road tire still sits right if you swap wheels between bikes.

What is the difference between the GR 531 and the G 540?

Same 24mm inner width and sleeved construction. The GR 531 is lighter and faster; the G 540 is deeper and stronger for loaded or rough riding.

Is the GR 531 good for cyclocross?

Yes. It is one of the most common alloy rims under a cross bike, and 33mm tubeless tires seat easily on it.

What tires fit the GR 531?

The factory rates it for 35 to 53mm tires; 38 to 45mm is the range most of our customers run.

Does the GR 531 need special nipples?

No. It takes standard brass or alloy nipples with no washers.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the DT Swiss GR 531 Disc Brake Rim?

We are not. DT Swiss manufactures the rim; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. DT Swiss lists the GR 531 Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
