DT Swiss HX 531 Disc Brake Rim
The DT Swiss HX 531 is the rim The factory designed for e-mountain bikes, which put a heavier bike, more torque and more braking through a wheel than a normal trail bike does. The HX 531 is a welded 30mm-internal aluminum rim in a heavy-duty alloy, sitting in the middle of the strength-to-weight-to-width range as what DT Swiss calls the ideal e-MTB allrounder. It works with a wide range of tire sizes and is tubeless-ready.
This page covers the DT Swiss HX 531 Disc Brake Rim in 29in, 27.5in. The HX 531 comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the hub, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.
Design and construction
The factory extrudes the HX 531 from a heavy-duty aluminum alloy and welds the seam, then smooths it for a precise, strong joint and a perfect tubeless tire fit. The 30mm inner width supports the 2.4 to 2.6in tires most e-MTBs run, and the section is thicker-walled than the equivalent EX rim to cope with the extra mass and torque of an electric bike.
The HX 531 spoke bed is reinforced for the higher spoke tensions an e-bike wheel wants, and the spoke holes are angled to the wheel's dish so tension stays even. Standard nipples; The factory supplies PHR washers to spread nipple load.
How it rides
An HX 531 wheel on an e-MTB feels like the bike finally has the wheel it needed. Stock e-bike wheels are often built to a price on rims meant for lighter bikes and they go out of true or dent; the HX 531 holds tension, keeps its shape on rock strikes and lets you run a big tire at the low pressure that makes an e-bike grip. It is heavier than a trail rim, which matters much less when the motor is doing the climbing.
The HX 531 is an e-MTB rim first, but it also makes a very tough wheel for a heavy rider on a normal enduro bike.

About this listing
Version notes. 29in, 27.5in, 32h, about 560g, 30mm inside, 21mm deep, disc. The other sizes and brake versions of the HX 531 have their own listings; this page is for this one.
This is the disc-brake HX 531: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The DT Swiss HX 531 Disc Brake Rim comes in 29in, 27.5in and 32h drilling. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the HX 531 on 350 hubs (e-bike approved), Hope Pro 5, Industry Nine Hydra, Onyx Vesper and Chris King MTB hubs, with Sapim Strong, Sapim E-Strong or Alpine III spokes and brass nipples for e-bike duty.
Tire range on the HX 531 is 2.4 to 2.8in. Pick e-bike as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and gauge to suit.
Build it with us
We build this rim to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the DT Swiss Hx 531 Disc Brake Rim already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
Testing, standards and warranty at DT Swiss
DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.
Each rim page states a maximum system weight and ASTM classification: the R 460 road rim is rated "Max. System weight 110 kg", "ASTM classification 1" and not approved for e-bikes; the RR 481 is rated 130 kg, ASTM classification 2 and "Approved for e-bikes Yes (max. 32Km/h or max. 250W)".

DT Swiss publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
DT makes the HX 531; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.
Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.
Warranty
DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.
ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.

HX 531 Disc Brake Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 30mm inside this is a trail width, sized around 2.1 to 2.4in tires. That is wide enough to stop a modern trail casing rolling under you in a corner without pushing the tread so flat that it wears down the middle.
What is the difference between the HX 531 and the EX 511?
Both are welded 30mm rims. The HX 531 uses a heavier-duty alloy and a thicker section for e-bike mass and torque; the EX 511 is lighter and built for enduro racing on a normal bike.
Which spokes should I use on an HX 531?
E-bike-rated spokes: Sapim Strong or E-Strong, or Alpine III, with brass nipples. The configurator picks these when you select e-bike.
Is the HX 531 tubeless?
Yes. It is tubeless-ready with a welded, smoothed bead; the maker's tape and valves are fitted on request.
Can I use the HX 531 on a non-electric bike?
Yes. It makes a very tough wheel for a heavy rider or a downhill bike; you just carry a little extra rim weight.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Yes. DT Swiss lists the HX 531 Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
Which spoke count should I choose?
It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
