ENVE Composites M5 Pro Rear Disc Brake Rim

The ENVE M5 is the cross-country racing rim in ENVE's M-Series, molded in Ogden, Utah, for riders who want the lightest, fastest 29in wheel that will still finish a World Cup course. It has a 27mm inner width, ENVE's shallow 20mm-class profile for compliance and low weight, patented molded spoke holes and a hookless bead with the wider, blunter wall ENVE introduced on its newest rims. This page covers the ENVE Composites M5 Pro Rear Disc Brake Rim; there are front- and rear-specific versions.

The M5 is not sold bare. You choose the hub and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The M-Series rims share three ideas. The spoke holes are molded, not drilled, so the carbon fibers run unbroken around each hole and the rim keeps its strength where a drilled rim is weakest. The profile is shallow, about 20mm, which is where the compliance comes from; a deep carbon rim is stiff in every direction, and the designers decided a mountain rim should give a little vertically. And the bead wall is wide and blunt on the newest generation, which is how the company cut pinch flats and rim damage compared with its earlier rims.

The M5 applies all of that at cross-country weight: 27mm inner width for 2.2 to 2.4in tires, the lightest layup in the range, external locking nipples and standard J-bend spokes. Front and rear versions differ in layup and, on some sizes, width.

How it rides

An M5 wheel is the definition of a race wheel: it accelerates instantly, it is laterally stiff enough to hold a line through a rooty corner, and the shallow profile takes the edge off chatter in a way that older, deeper carbon rims never did. It is light enough that a full-suspension XC bike on M5 wheels feels like a hardtail on climbs.

The M5 is a cross-country and down-country rim. For trail riding on bigger tires the M6 is wider and tougher; for enduro the M8.

This listing

This is the 29in listing of the M5, 24h, about 360g, 27mm inside, 20mm deep, disc. Pick the size that matches your frame; the profile and construction are the same across the range.

This is the disc-brake M5: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The ENVE Composites M5 Pro Rear Disc Brake Rim comes in the drillings listed on this page. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the M5 on the brand's own hubs, Industry Nine Hydra and SOLiX, DT Swiss 240 and 180, Chris King MTB and Hope Pro 5 hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray, Laser or D-Light spokes or DT Aerolite and Competition, and brass or alloy nipples.

Tire range on the M5 is 2.2 to 2.4in, tubeless-ready tires only on the hookless bead. Give the configurator your bike type and weight; it picks a sensible spoke count and lacing pattern, which you can override.

Put it in a custom wheel

Build a custom wheel around the ENVE Composites M5 Pro Rear Disc Brake Rim — the link drops you into our Custom Wheel Program with this rim pinned, ready for you to choose the rest. It is set up for mountain bike and MTB single-speed builds.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

What ENVE Composites says about testing

ENVE makes and tests its rims in Ogden, Utah. For mountain rims it runs three drop tests, each dropping a calibrated weight onto a wheel with an inflated tire. Test 1 (since 2007) strikes both rim walls and is raised until first visible damage; ENVE requires 10 in for XC, 12 in for trail and 14 in for gravity rims. Test 2 (since 2014) strikes one rim wall to mimic pinch-flat hits, requiring 5 in (XC), 6 in (trail), 8 in (gravity) and 10 in (DH race). Test 3 (since 2021) rotates the wheel between hits so every spoke hole is struck, 100-plus impacts per rim. ENVE states the 2024 M6 improved 47% over the M630 and the M8 21% over the M730.

ENVE's Limited Lifetime Warranty covers rims for life for the original owner (proof of purchase required); hub internals and bearings one year; second-hand owners five years from date of manufacture. Crash replacement supplies a new rim at no charge within three years of purchase and at 30% off list price after that. SES 2.3, 3.4, 4.5 and 6.7 tubeless wheels are on the UCI approved list (approvals 24 January to 3 May 2022).

Everything in this section is published by ENVE Composites. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

ENVE makes the M5 in Ogden, Utah; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer, and the factory warranty rides with the rim. Every M5 wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge to the factory specification, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.

In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.

Warranty

ENVE Composites's warranty. ENVE gives the original owner a five-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, alongside its Lifetime Incident Protection program, which covers rims, forks, bars, stems, seatposts and hubs damaged in riding incidents.

ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.

M5 Pro Rear Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 27mm inside this is a trail width, sized around 2.1 to 2.4in tires. That is wide enough to stop a modern trail casing rolling under you in a corner without pushing the tread so flat that it wears down the middle.

What is the difference between the M5, M6, M8 and M9?

Intended use and width. M5 is cross-country at 25mm; M6 is trail at 32mm front and 29mm rear; M8 is enduro; M9 is ENVE's heaviest-duty downhill rim.

Why are there front and rear versions?

ENVE tunes the layup and sometimes the width to the job each wheel does: the front for grip and compliance, the rear for stiffness and impact strength.

Is the M5 hookless?

Yes. Use tubeless-ready tires and stay under the maximum pressure printed on the rim.

Is the M5 made in the USA?

Yes. ENVE molds its rims in Ogden, Utah.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. ENVE Composites lists the M5 Pro Rear Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.

Which spoke count should I choose?

It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
