ENVE Composites M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim

The ENVE M9 is the downhill rim in ENVE's M-Series, its heaviest-duty gravity rim, molded in Ogden, Utah, for World Cup downhill and bike park riding. It carries the most material of any M-Series rim at the bead wall and spoke bed, the patented molded spoke holes, and the wide, blunt hookless bead that protects the tire on the kind of hits a downhill bike takes every run. This page covers the ENVE Composites M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim.

The M9 is sold here only inside a wheel we build: choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia, laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The M-Series rims share three ideas. The spoke holes are molded, not drilled, so the carbon fibers run unbroken around each hole and the rim keeps its strength where a drilled rim is weakest. The profile is shallow, about 20mm, which is where the compliance comes from; a deep carbon rim is stiff in every direction, and the designers decided a mountain rim should give a little vertically. And the bead wall is wide and blunt on the newest generation, which is how the company cut pinch flats and rim damage compared with its earlier rims.

How it rides

An M9 wheel is built to be pointed downhill and left alone. It is stiff, it is heavy for a carbon rim and light for a downhill rim, and it survives the flat landings and rock gardens that fold alloy downhill rims. The shallow profile still gives a little vertically, which on a downhill bike shows up as traction rather than comfort.

The M9 is a downhill and bike-park rim. For enduro the M8 is lighter and the better all-rounder.

This version

This version is the M9 in 29in, 27.5in, drilled 32h, about 725g, 29mm inside, 22mm deep, disc. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.

This is the disc-brake M9: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The ENVE Composites M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim comes in the drillings listed on this page. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the M9 on the brand's own hubs, Industry Nine Hydra, DT Swiss 350 and 240, Chris King MTB, Hope Pro 5 and Onyx Vesper hubs, usually with Sapim Race, CX-Sprint or Strong spokes or DT Competition and Alpine III, and brass nipples.

Tire range on the M9 is 2.4 to 2.6in, tubeless-ready tires only on the hookless bead. Pick downhill or e-bike as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for mountain bike, MTB single-speed and fat bike builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the ENVE Composites M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

How ENVE Composites tests its rims

ENVE makes and tests its rims in Ogden, Utah. For mountain rims it runs three drop tests, each dropping a calibrated weight onto a wheel with an inflated tire. Test 1 (since 2007) strikes both rim walls and is raised until first visible damage; ENVE requires 10 in for XC, 12 in for trail and 14 in for gravity rims. Test 2 (since 2014) strikes one rim wall to mimic pinch-flat hits, requiring 5 in (XC), 6 in (trail), 8 in (gravity) and 10 in (DH race). Test 3 (since 2021) rotates the wheel between hits so every spoke hole is struck, 100-plus impacts per rim. ENVE states the 2024 M6 improved 47% over the M630 and the M8 21% over the M730.

ENVE's Limited Lifetime Warranty covers rims for life for the original owner (proof of purchase required); hub internals and bearings one year; second-hand owners five years from date of manufacture. Crash replacement supplies a new rim at no charge within three years of purchase and at 30% off list price after that. SES 2.3, 3.4, 4.5 and 6.7 tubeless wheels are on the UCI approved list (approvals 24 January to 3 May 2022).

The figures, certificates and media above are ENVE Composites's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the rim.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

ENVE makes the M9; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

ENVE Composites's warranty. ENVE gives the original owner a five-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, alongside its Lifetime Incident Protection program, which covers rims, forks, bars, stems, seatposts and hubs damaged in riding incidents.

ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 29mm inside this is a trail width, sized around 2.1 to 2.4in tires. That is wide enough to stop a modern trail casing rolling under you in a corner without pushing the tread so flat that it wears down the middle.

Which spokes and nipples suit the M9?

For most riders a double-butted spoke such as Sapim Race or DT Competition with brass nipples; lighter riders can go to Sapim Laser or CX-Ray. The configurator recommends a gauge and count for the M9 from your bike type and weight.

Why are there front and rear versions?

ENVE tunes the layup and sometimes the width to the job each wheel does: the front for grip and compliance, the rear for stiffness and impact strength.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the ENVE Composites M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim?

No. ENVE Composites makes the rim. ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia that builds it into a finished wheel to your spec.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. ENVE Composites lists the M9 Pro Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.

Which spoke count should I choose?

It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.

How long will the wheel take?

Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. The estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out.
