ENVE M9 Pro Wheelset

The ENVE M9 Pro is ENVE's gravity race wheel, developed with Commencal/Muc-Off, Frameworks Racing, The Union, Brendan Fairclough, and other professional downhill athletes. ENVE calls it the fastest, most reliable downhill wheel on the market, and its defining feature is the patented Protective Rim Strip, a molded polymer strip that wraps the rim in place of tape so the tire holds air to the bottom of the mountain no matter what the rim hits.

Built to J-bend INNERDRIVE hubs with round Sprint spokes, the M9 Pro weighs 2,200 grams per set. It is heavier than the M8 by design; the extra material is in the rim and the strip, where it protects the tire and the carbon from the kind of impacts a World Cup track delivers.

The M9 Pro is for downhill racers, freeriders, bike park riders, and enduro racers who would rather carry a little more weight than lose a run to a flat or a cracked rim.

Design and construction

The M9 Pro rim is 29mm wide internally front and rear and 22mm deep, with a 6.2mm hook width that includes the Protective Rim Strip. The strip is a molded polymer band that replaces conventional rim tape and gives the tire bead a cushioned, sealed seat that keeps holding air even after a rim-damaging hit. Rim weight is 725 grams front and 720 grams for the 29 rear, 715 grams for the 27.5 rear.

Lacing is J-bend Sprint round spokes, 28-hole front and 32-hole rear, with Alpina Nylock brass external nipples tensioned to 100 kgf. ENVE publishes the spoke lengths for the stock hubs: 300mm drive and 298mm non-drive in front, 292 and 296mm on the 29 rear, 274 and 276mm on the 27.5 rear. The INNERDRIVE J-bend hub uses an oversized steel ratchet, ships with the 80-tooth 4.5 degree mountain ratchet, and accepts 40, 60 and 100-tooth options.

The M9 Pro is available in centerlock or 6-bolt. Front spacing is 15x110 with centerlock or 20x110 with 6-bolt; rear spacing is 12x148 Boost or 12x157 Superboost in either rotor standard. It shares its 28/32 spoke counts and hub options with the M8, so the two are easy to mix on a bike that sees both park days and enduro races.

How it rides

The M9 Pro rides with the composure of a wheel that expects to be hit. The Protective Rim Strip does more than prevent flats; it damps the sharp edge of square hits so the wheel feels quieter through rock gardens and braking bumps, and the 100 kgf Sprint spoke build adds a controlled amount of compliance for traction. The 29mm inner width gives a 2.4 or 2.5 inch downhill tire a stable, predictable profile at race pressures.

The 6-bolt options matter here: many downhill forks and race hubs still use 20x110 axles and 6-bolt rotors, and ENVE covers both standards. On a lift-served day the extra weight over the M8 is irrelevant; on an enduro bike you will notice it on long pedal stages, which is why ENVE makes both. The M9 Pro is the choice when the run matters more than the climb: downhill racing, freeride, bike park laps, and eMTB riders who want the most reliable carbon wheel ENVE makes.

About this listing

What you are buying here is the M9 Pro Wheelset. The choices on this page are wheel(s): Wheelset - 29", Wheelset - Mullet (29" F / 27.5" R); hub: INNERDRIVE - Front - 15x110mm CL, INNERDRIVE - Front - 20x110mm 6B, INNERDRIVE - Rear Boost - 12x148mm CL, INNERDRIVE - Rear Boost - 12x148mm 6B, INNERDRIVE - Rear Superboost - 12x157mm CL, INNERDRIVE - Rear Superboost - 12x157mm 6B; driver type: None (front wheel), Shimano Micro Spline, SRAM XD. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.

Fit and compatibility

The M9 Pro is sold per wheel. Front wheels are 29 inch in 15x110 centerlock or 20x110 6-bolt. For the rear, pick 29 or 27.5 inch, then 12x148 Boost or 12x157 Superboost, then centerlock or 6-bolt, and finally a Shimano Micro Spline or SRAM XD freehub body.

That covers full 29 downhill bikes, mixed-wheel race bikes, and forks with 20mm axles. Centerlock versions ship without lockrings.

Testing, standards and warranty at ENVE

ENVE Composites designs, tests and manufactures its carbon rims in an 80,000 square foot facility in Ogden, Utah. ENVE describes the site as having manufacturing, assembly, design, R&D, test lab, customer support and the business team under one roof, and says it has been committed to US manufacturing since 2007. Every SES rim is handmade in Ogden, and ENVE states that a new lay-up technician undergoes six months of training before certification. Wheels are built to order, which ENVE says minimizes waste and allows custom hub, spoke and decal options.

ENVE publishes its impact test program in detail. Three in-house standards are used: a standard impact test (since 2007) that drops a weight onto both rim walls to simulate square edge hits, with drop heights of 10 inches for XC, 12 inches for trail and 14 inches for gravity rims; a single sided impact test (since 2014) that loads only one rim wall, at 5, 6, 8 and 10 inches for XC, trail, gravity and DH race; and an every spoke hole impact test (since 2021) in which the wheel is rotated after each hit so every spoke hole is struck until first visible damage, which can mean more than 100 impacts on one rim. ENVE reports its current M Series rims outscore the previous generation on that cumulative fatigue score by 10 to 47 percent depending on model.

ENVE's hookless rims use a Wide Hookless Bead, a wider, more forgiving surface at the leading edge of the rim that ENVE says dissipates impact energy and reduces the likelihood of pinch flatting a tubeless tire. ENVE states the hookless design allows machined metal tooling to hold a precise bead seat diameter that meets the ETRTO requirement. In the eight years since its first hookless road wheels, ENVE reports more than 1,000 tubeless tire tests; for a tire to be listed as approved it must hold 120 psi, or 165 percent of the ETRTO/ISO reference pressure, well beyond the ISO 4210 requirement of 110 percent for five minutes. Maximum pressures are published per model: SES 3.4 and SES 4.5 are rated 80 psi with 27 to 29 mm tires and 67 psi with tires over 30 mm; SES 2.3 and SES 6.7 are rated 90 psi with a 25 mm tire. ENVE advises always defaulting to the lower of the rim and tire maximum. ENVE does not publish a wheel specific rider weight limit; its tire pressure guidance suggests riders in the 240 to 250 lb range move to 30 to 32 mm tires to stay within pressure limits, and its complete bikes carry a 300 lb rider limit.

The Smart ENVE System (SES) is built on the Real-World Fast philosophy developed with aerodynamicist Simon Smart since 2009. Rather than optimizing for a steady wind tunnel condition, ENVE develops rim shapes for rapid airflow reattachment after gusts, and states that SES wheels are tested at 20 mph and 30 mph across a weighted range of wind angles, with a shallower front rim for crosswind stability and a deeper rear rim for reduced drag. The SES PRO line was developed with UAE Team Emirates and Tadej Pogacar under World Tour requirements, which ENVE notes include compliance with the governing bodies, and ENVE's Custom Road bike is stated to be UCI compliant and approved for UCI sanctioned events. The INNERDRIVE hub in current SES and G Series wheels uses a 42 mm oversized ratchet positioned over the bearings with Perfect Preload wave washers, and ENVE says it has been proven by UAE Team Emirates over tens of thousands of World Tour miles.

ENVE covers rims and components with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner (hub internals and bearings one year); subsequent owners receive five years from the manufacture date. A separate crash replacement program replaces rims and components at no charge for the first three years from purchase, with a prorated discount after that, for original owners with proof of purchase. ENVE says it does not design products to be indestructible, and that labor and shipping are not included.
