ENVE SES 4.5 Pro Wheelset

The ENVE SES 4.5 Pro is ENVE's answer to a very specific request from Tadej Pogacar and UAE Team Emirates over two seasons: take the SES 4.5's aerodynamics and make it as light as a climbing wheel. The result is a 49mm front and 55mm rear rim, a hooked bead, a new higher-modulus carbon laminate, and the ultralight INNERDRIVE PRO hubset, for a wheelset weight of 1,295 grams plus or minus 3 percent.

This is a race wheel in the plain sense. ENVE notes the SES 4.5 Pro had already collected more than 20 wins in its debut season, and everything about the build, from the Alpina Ultralite Aero R5 spokes to the ceramic bearings, is chosen for rolling efficiency and low weight first.

Compared with the standard SES 4.5, the SES 4.5 Pro drops roughly 50 grams per rim by slimming the rim profile, reducing depth by a millimeter, and removing material from the bead while keeping the inner rim width, and therefore tire volume, essentially intact. It is the wheel for riders whose events are decided on both climbs and flat run-ins.

Design and construction

The SES 4.5 Pro rim is 23.5mm wide internally with a 0.5mm hook at the bead, which distinguishes it from the hookless standard SES 4.5. Depth is 49mm front and 55mm rear. ENVE's aero optimization targets a 27 to 28mm tire, the minimum tire is 28mm labeled (27mm for ENVE's own tires), and the maximum pressure is 100 psi (6.8 bar), a higher ceiling than the hookless SES models allow. Front rim weight is 369 grams and rear is 383 grams, and the laminate uses higher-modulus, lower areal weight carbon so the sidewalls can be thinner without giving up strength. ERD is 563mm front and 553mm rear.

The SES 4.5 Pro is laced 24-hole with Alpina Ultralite Aero R5 spokes in a 2.0/1.5/2.0 butted profile and Alpina Nylock alloy nipples, tensioned to 120 kgf. The hubs are INNERDRIVE PRO: an ultralight straight-pull shell with ENVE PRO ceramic bearings, Perfect Preload, and the 40-tooth ratchet with a light-action spring that ENVE developed for its pro teams to reduce drag. The Pro hubset weighs 281 grams, 87 front and 194 rear, about 60 grams under the Premium hubset.

Brake interface is centerlock, and unlike the Premium SES wheels the SES 4.5 Pro includes its lockring. Spacing is 12x100 front and 12x142 rear, 700c only. Complete wheel weights are 587 grams front and 708 grams rear. Tape width is 29mm, with 66mm front and 72mm rear valves.

How it rides

The SES 4.5 Pro rides like a deep wheel that forgot to be heavy. Acceleration out of corners and on steep ramps is where you notice the missing grams and the low-drag freehub; the 40-tooth ratchet gives a little less instant bite than the 60-tooth Premium but spins with less resistance, which is the trade ENVE's riders asked for. The R5 spokes and the stiff PRO shell keep the wheel tracking straight under a hard sprint.

On flat and rolling roads the SES 4.5 Pro keeps almost all of the standard SES 4.5's aero performance, with the same front-specific crosswind manners. The hooked bead and 100 psi ceiling also make it easier to run firmer pressures for smooth-road time trials or criteriums. This is a wheel for racers and serious riders who will notice a 140 gram wheelset difference and who want one wheelset for hilly and flat events alike.

The wheel fits 700c disc road bikes with 12x100 front and 12x142 rear thru-axles and centerlock rotors. Lockrings are included with the SES 4.5 Pro.

Testing, standards and warranty at ENVE

ENVE Composites designs, tests and manufactures its carbon rims in an 80,000 square foot facility in Ogden, Utah. ENVE describes the site as having manufacturing, assembly, design, R&D, test lab, customer support and the business team under one roof, and says it has been committed to US manufacturing since 2007. Every SES rim is handmade in Ogden, and ENVE states that a new lay-up technician undergoes six months of training before certification. Wheels are built to order, which ENVE says minimizes waste and allows custom hub, spoke and decal options.

ENVE publishes its impact test program in detail. Three in-house standards are used: a standard impact test (since 2007) that drops a weight onto both rim walls to simulate square edge hits, with drop heights of 10 inches for XC, 12 inches for trail and 14 inches for gravity rims; a single sided impact test (since 2014) that loads only one rim wall, at 5, 6, 8 and 10 inches for XC, trail, gravity and DH race; and an every spoke hole impact test (since 2021) in which the wheel is rotated after each hit so every spoke hole is struck until first visible damage, which can mean more than 100 impacts on one rim. ENVE reports its current M Series rims outscore the previous generation on that cumulative fatigue score by 10 to 47 percent depending on model.

ENVE's hookless rims use a Wide Hookless Bead, a wider, more forgiving surface at the leading edge of the rim that ENVE says dissipates impact energy and reduces the likelihood of pinch flatting a tubeless tire. ENVE states the hookless design allows machined metal tooling to hold a precise bead seat diameter that meets the ETRTO requirement. In the eight years since its first hookless road wheels, ENVE reports more than 1,000 tubeless tire tests; for a tire to be listed as approved it must hold 120 psi, or 165 percent of the ETRTO/ISO reference pressure, well beyond the ISO 4210 requirement of 110 percent for five minutes. Maximum pressures are published per model: SES 3.4 and SES 4.5 are rated 80 psi with 27 to 29 mm tires and 67 psi with tires over 30 mm; SES 2.3 and SES 6.7 are rated 90 psi with a 25 mm tire. ENVE advises always defaulting to the lower of the rim and tire maximum. ENVE does not publish a wheel specific rider weight limit; its tire pressure guidance suggests riders in the 240 to 250 lb range move to 30 to 32 mm tires to stay within pressure limits, and its complete bikes carry a 300 lb rider limit.

The Smart ENVE System (SES) is built on the Real-World Fast philosophy developed with aerodynamicist Simon Smart since 2009. Rather than optimizing for a steady wind tunnel condition, ENVE develops rim shapes for rapid airflow reattachment after gusts, and states that SES wheels are tested at 20 mph and 30 mph across a weighted range of wind angles, with a shallower front rim for crosswind stability and a deeper rear rim for reduced drag. The SES PRO line was developed with UAE Team Emirates and Tadej Pogacar under World Tour requirements, which ENVE notes include compliance with the governing bodies, and ENVE's Custom Road bike is stated to be UCI compliant and approved for UCI sanctioned events. The INNERDRIVE hub in current SES and G Series wheels uses a 42 mm oversized ratchet positioned over the bearings with Perfect Preload wave washers, and ENVE says it has been proven by UAE Team Emirates over tens of thousands of World Tour miles.

ENVE covers rims and components with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner (hub internals and bearings one year); subsequent owners receive five years from the manufacture date. A separate crash replacement program replaces rims and components at no charge for the first three years from purchase, with a prorated discount after that, for original owners with proof of purchase. ENVE says it does not design products to be indestructible, and that labor and shipping are not included.

SES 4.5 Pro questions

Is the SES 4.5 Pro hooked or hookless?

Hooked. ENVE removed material from the wide hookless bead to leave a 0.5mm hook, which is why the SES 4.5 Pro allows up to 100 psi where the hookless SES 4.5 stops at 80.

How much lighter is the SES 4.5 Pro than the SES 4.5?

About 50 grams per rim and roughly 60 grams at the hubset. ENVE lists the Pro wheelset at 1,295 grams versus about 1,432 for the standard version.

What is different about the INNERDRIVE PRO hub?

An ultralight shell, ENVE PRO ceramic bearings, and a 40-tooth ratchet with a light-action spring chosen to reduce drag. It engages at 9 degrees rather than the 6 degrees of the Premium's 60-tooth ratchet.

Does the SES 4.5 Pro include lockrings?

Yes. ENVE lists the SES 4.5 Pro hub offering as including the centerlock lockring.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the SES 4.5 Pro?

No. ENVE designs and builds the SES 4.5 Pro in Ogden, Utah. ProWheelBuilder is an authorized reseller in Georgia and also offers custom builds on ENVE rims.

What is the minimum tire for the SES 4.5 Pro?

28mm labeled, or 27mm if it is an ENVE tire. ENVE optimizes the rim around a 27 to 28mm tire.
