ENVE SES 4.5 Wheelset
The ENVE SES 4.5 is the wheel that proved a deep rim and a wide tire could go together. ENVE first designed it for the cobbles and crosswinds of Paris-Roubaix, where riders wanted an aero benefit on 28 to 30mm tires, and the current SES 4.5 is a lighter redesign of that idea: 50mm deep in front, 56mm in the rear, hookless, and built on INNERDRIVE Premium hubs.
If speed across most any road is your first priority, this is the SES to look at. The SES 4.5 is deeper and faster than the SES 3.4 but still stable enough that ENVE, and most riders, treat it as an everyday wheel rather than a race-day-only choice. ENVE's own summary is go fast, everywhere.
Against the SES 4.5 Pro, the standard SES 4.5 keeps the full-width hookless bead and the Premium hub with steel bearings, giving up roughly 50 grams per rim to the Pro in exchange for a more accessible price and a slightly wider inner width.
Design and construction
The SES 4.5 rim is 25mm wide internally at both ends, aero-optimized for a 27 to 28mm labeled tubeless tire with 27mm as the minimum and 80 psi (5.5 bar) as the pressure ceiling at that size. Front and rear rims are separate designs: the front profile is shaped for crosswind stability, the rear to recapture airflow coming off the frame. Both use ENVE's Wide Hookless Bead at the rim's leading edge, which ENVE says reduces tubeless pinch flats by half, and both are tubeless-only. Rim weight is 411 grams front and 415 grams rear.
Lacing is 24 straight-pull spokes per wheel into the INNERDRIVE Premium hub. The Premium hub uses an oversized 42mm steel ratchet with 40, 60, 80 and 100-tooth choices and ships with the 60-tooth road ratchet at 6 degrees of engagement. Perfect Preload sets bearing preload automatically, bearings are steel, and anti-twist spoke holes plus silent spoke crossings are standard. ENVE weighs the Premium hubset at 326 grams.
The SES 4.5 is centerlock disc, 12x100 front and 12x142 rear, 700c only, lockrings not included. Complete wheel weight with tape and valve is 690 grams front and 803 grams rear, for a wheelset of about 1,432 grams plus or minus 3 percent. ERD is 558mm front and 547mm rear; tape width is 29mm.
How it rides
At speed the SES 4.5 does what a 50/56mm wheel should: it holds momentum on flat and rolling roads, and the 56mm rear noticeably reduces the effort of staying on a fast wheel or driving a break. The surprise is how little the front asks of you in a crosswind. ENVE's front-specific shape makes the SES 4.5 far calmer than its depth suggests, and it is a wheel plenty of riders leave on for windy days.
Ride quality follows the tire. On 28mm tubeless tires at the pressures ENVE allows, the SES 4.5 is smooth over broken pavement and does not beat you up on chip seal. It is a strong choice for road racers, triathletes on a road bike, fast group ride regulars, and anyone who does a lot of miles on flat to rolling terrain. On a climbing-heavy day it gives up a little to the SES 2.3 and SES 3.4, but not as much as its depth implies.

How ENVE tests its wheels
ENVE Composites designs, tests and manufactures its carbon rims in an 80,000 square foot facility in Ogden, Utah. ENVE describes the site as having manufacturing, assembly, design, R&D, test lab, customer support and the business team under one roof, and says it has been committed to US manufacturing since 2007. Every SES rim is handmade in Ogden, and ENVE states that a new lay-up technician undergoes six months of training before certification. Wheels are built to order, which ENVE says minimizes waste and allows custom hub, spoke and decal options.
ENVE publishes its impact test program in detail. Three in-house standards are used: a standard impact test (since 2007) that drops a weight onto both rim walls to simulate square edge hits, with drop heights of 10 inches for XC, 12 inches for trail and 14 inches for gravity rims; a single sided impact test (since 2014) that loads only one rim wall, at 5, 6, 8 and 10 inches for XC, trail, gravity and DH race; and an every spoke hole impact test (since 2021) in which the wheel is rotated after each hit so every spoke hole is struck until first visible damage, which can mean more than 100 impacts on one rim. ENVE reports its current M Series rims outscore the previous generation on that cumulative fatigue score by 10 to 47 percent depending on model.
ENVE's hookless rims use a Wide Hookless Bead, a wider, more forgiving surface at the leading edge of the rim that ENVE says dissipates impact energy and reduces the likelihood of pinch flatting a tubeless tire. ENVE states the hookless design allows machined metal tooling to hold a precise bead seat diameter that meets the ETRTO requirement. In the eight years since its first hookless road wheels, ENVE reports more than 1,000 tubeless tire tests; for a tire to be listed as approved it must hold 120 psi, or 165 percent of the ETRTO/ISO reference pressure, well beyond the ISO 4210 requirement of 110 percent for five minutes. Maximum pressures are published per model: SES 3.4 and SES 4.5 are rated 80 psi with 27 to 29 mm tires and 67 psi with tires over 30 mm; SES 2.3 and SES 6.7 are rated 90 psi with a 25 mm tire. ENVE advises always defaulting to the lower of the rim and tire maximum. ENVE does not publish a wheel specific rider weight limit; its tire pressure guidance suggests riders in the 240 to 250 lb range move to 30 to 32 mm tires to stay within pressure limits, and its complete bikes carry a 300 lb rider limit.
The Smart ENVE System (SES) is built on the Real-World Fast philosophy developed with aerodynamicist Simon Smart since 2009. Rather than optimizing for a steady wind tunnel condition, ENVE develops rim shapes for rapid airflow reattachment after gusts, and states that SES wheels are tested at 20 mph and 30 mph across a weighted range of wind angles, with a shallower front rim for crosswind stability and a deeper rear rim for reduced drag. The SES PRO line was developed with UAE Team Emirates and Tadej Pogacar under World Tour requirements, which ENVE notes include compliance with the governing bodies, and ENVE's Custom Road bike is stated to be UCI compliant and approved for UCI sanctioned events. The INNERDRIVE hub in current SES and G Series wheels uses a 42 mm oversized ratchet positioned over the bearings with Perfect Preload wave washers, and ENVE says it has been proven by UAE Team Emirates over tens of thousands of World Tour miles.
ENVE covers rims and components with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner (hub internals and bearings one year); subsequent owners receive five years from the manufacture date. A separate crash replacement program replaces rims and components at no charge for the first three years from purchase, with a prorated discount after that, for original owners with proof of purchase. ENVE says it does not design products to be indestructible, and that labor and shipping are not included.

SES 4.5 questions
What is the difference between the SES 4.5 and the SES 4.5 Pro?
The standard SES 4.5 uses the full Wide Hookless Bead, a 25mm inner width, and the INNERDRIVE Premium hub with steel bearings. The Pro trims the rim by about 50 grams each, adds a small hook, narrows the bed to 23.5mm, and uses the INNERDRIVE PRO hub with ceramic bearings.
Is the SES 4.5 stable in crosswinds?
ENVE shapes the SES 4.5 front rim specifically for crosswind stability, and most riders find the 50mm front calmer than its depth suggests. The 56mm rear is behind you and does not affect steering.
What tires does the SES 4.5 accept?
Tubeless-ready tires labeled 27mm or wider, with 80 psi as the maximum at 27mm. ENVE optimizes the aero shape for 27 to 28mm tires.
Which freehubs can I get on the SES 4.5 rear?
Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo N3W, or Shimano Micro Spline.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the SES 4.5?
No. ENVE builds the SES 4.5 in Ogden, Utah. ProWheelBuilder is an authorized reseller in Georgia and also builds custom wheels on ENVE rims if you want a different hub or spoke count.
Does the SES 4.5 come with tape and valves?
Yes. ENVE ships it tubeless-ready with 29mm tape and a valve installed. Centerlock lockrings are not included.
