Mavic A-319 Rim
The Mavic A319 is the touring rim that has been on more loaded bikes than any other: 19mm wide inside, 19.2mm tall, extruded from 6106 alloy with full double stainless eyelets at every spoke hole, a machined brake track and a bed that takes tires up to 50mm. It is the classic choice for loaded touring, commuting, trekking and fixed-gear wheels that have to survive, and it comes in the 32 and 36 hole drillings a touring wheel wants.
This page covers the Mavic A-319 Rim in 700c. The A319 is not sold bare. You choose the hub and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
The A319 is a double-wall touring rim with a wide, shallow section that supports 28 to 50mm tires, thick walls, and full double eyelets that spread nipple load through both walls so it takes the high spoke tension a loaded wheel needs without the bed cracking. The brake track is machined and deep enough to wear for years. It is a tube-type rim, not tubeless, and that is right for a touring wheel that may need a tube change on the roadside. Standard nipples, J-bend spokes, 32 and 36 hole.
How it rides
An A319 wheel is steady and dependable. It does not flex under a loaded bike, the brake track lasts, and with 36 spokes on a good hub it stays true across continents; we have customers on A319 wheels with decades of touring on them. It is not light and it is not aero, and on a touring bike neither matters.
For a lighter road wheel the Open Pro UST is the choice; for loaded touring, commuting and trekking, the A319 is the Mavic rim we recommend.

This listing
This is the 700c listing of the A319, 32h, 36h, about 595g, 19mm inside, 17.2mm deep, disc. Pick the size that matches your frame; the profile and construction are the same across the range.
This is the disc-brake A319: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Mavic A-319 Rim comes in 700c and 32h, 36h drilling. It is a rim-brake rim. We build the A319 on Shimano, Phil Wood, Velocity Standard, Velo Orange, Son and Shimano dynamo, DT Swiss 350 and White Industries hubs, usually with DT Champion or Sapim Strong and Leader spokes and brass nipples.
Tire range on the A319 is 28 to 50mm. Pick touring or commuter as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build it into a wheel
This rim is live in our Custom Wheel Program for road rim brake, track and road single-speed and touring builds. Start a build with the Mavic A-319 Rim and the configurator opens with this exact rim pinned at the top of the Mavic list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
What Mavic says about testing
Mavic tests rims and wheels at its Competence Center in Chavanod, near Annecy, France: over 175 m2 for static tests and 360 m2 for dynamic tests, almost 47 tests in all. Mavic states its impact test follows UCI rules pushed to 150%; the wheel must not break or deform. Its climatic chamber cycles rims between +70°C and -10°C at 0 to 100% humidity over several days; the braking test runs 750 braking operations between 0 and 70 km/h; the hub torque test runs 100,000 cycles; the dancer bench simulates 500 km of climbing; front-end endurance covers 7,000 km at 70 km/h, plus field tests of 5,000 km (mountain) and 10,000 km (road). For the Comete 50, Mavic states 57 tests, frontal crash results 50% above UCI requirements, fatigue at 70 km/h under 120 kg equivalent to 700,000 km, and a 120 kg maximum load.
Mavic's Open Pro C alloy rim uses Maxtal alloy, which Mavic states has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than 6106; the joint is arc welded (SUP) and milled. It is a 622x15C hooked rim, 18 mm high, 19 mm internal, 435 g, for 19 to 28 mm tires.

Everything in this section is published by Mavic. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Mavic makes the A319; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Every A319 wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.
In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Mavic warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Mavic and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
A-319 Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 19mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.
Is the A319 tubeless?
No. It is a tube-type touring rim, which suits a wheel that may need a roadside tube change.
What tires fit the A319?
28 to 50mm. A 35 to 42mm touring tire is the usual pairing.
What spoke count should an A319 touring wheel have?
36 rear and 32 or 36 front for loaded touring; the configurator recommends from your bike type and load.
Is the A319 disc compatible?
The A319 is a rim-brake rim; Mavic's A719 and the disc-specific touring rims in the catalog cover disc bikes.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Mavic lists the A-319 Rim as clincher. Ask us about tubeless conversion if you need it.
Which spoke count should I choose?
It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
