Mavic Open Pro UST Rim Brake Rim
The Mavic Open Pro is the road rim more hand-built wheels have been laced with than any other, and the Open Pro UST is its modern form: 19mm inside for today's 25 to 32mm tires, about 430 grams, machined between the spokes with Mavic's ISM4D process to trim weight, with black eyelets, a matte finish and a UST tubeless bed that seats a tire with a floor pump and seals without drama. It comes in rim-brake and disc versions, 24, 28 and 32 hole, and Mavic recommends tires from 28 to 47mm on the disc rim.
This page covers the Mavic Open Pro UST Rim Brake Rim in 700c. The Open Pro UST is not sold bare. You choose the hub and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
UST is Mavic's tubeless standard, older than anyone else's, and the Open Pro UST bed is shaped to its tolerances: the tire bead drops into a well and pops onto a precise seat, which is why a UST rim seals with a floor pump when other rims need a compressor. The rim is a 25mm-deep, 19mm-inner double-wall extrusion with a welded SUP joint that is then milled flush, so the brake track on the rim-brake version is continuous, and the ISM4D milling removes material between the spoke holes where the rim carries no load. Eyelets are black to match the matte finish.
Standard nipples, J-bend spokes; the rim-brake version has Mavic's UB machined brake track, the disc version a plain sidewall.
How it rides
An Open Pro UST wheel rides like the Open Pro always has: smooth, light and dependable, now with a wider bed that makes a 28mm tire comfortable and a tubeless setup that actually works. It is the rim we suggest for a classic road build on a modern bike, a rim-brake bike that wants tubeless, or a disc road bike that wants an alloy wheel with a pedigree.
For a deeper alloy rim Mavic makes the CXP Pro; for a touring rim the A319. For an everyday road wheel, the Open Pro UST is the Mavic rim we recommend.

This listing
This is the 700c listing of the Open Pro UST, 24h, 28h, 32h, about 420g, 19mm inside, 23mm deep, rim-brake. Pick the size that matches your frame; the profile and construction are the same across the range.
This is the rim-brake Open Pro UST, with machined sidewalls for caliper, cantilever or V-brakes. Choose it for a rim-brake frame; for a disc-brake bike the disc version, listed separately, drops the brake track and a few grams.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Mavic Open Pro UST Rim Brake Rim comes in 700c and 24h, 28h, 32h drilling, in rim-brake and disc versions; check the name on this page. We build the Open Pro UST on DT Swiss 350, 240 and 180, Shimano, White Industries T11 and CLD, Chris King R45, Bitex and Hope RS4 hubs, usually with Sapim Race, Laser or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and Aerolite, and brass or alloy nipples.
Tire range on the Open Pro UST is 25 to 47mm. Give the configurator your bike type and weight; it picks a sensible spoke count and lacing pattern, which you can override.
Build a wheel around it
Offered for road rim brake, track and road single-speed and touring builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Mavic Open Pro UST Rim Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
What Mavic says about testing
Mavic tests rims and wheels at its Competence Center in Chavanod, near Annecy, France: over 175 m2 for static tests and 360 m2 for dynamic tests, almost 47 tests in all. Mavic states its impact test follows UCI rules pushed to 150%; the wheel must not break or deform. Its climatic chamber cycles rims between +70°C and -10°C at 0 to 100% humidity over several days; the braking test runs 750 braking operations between 0 and 70 km/h; the hub torque test runs 100,000 cycles; the dancer bench simulates 500 km of climbing; front-end endurance covers 7,000 km at 70 km/h, plus field tests of 5,000 km (mountain) and 10,000 km (road). For the Comete 50, Mavic states 57 tests, frontal crash results 50% above UCI requirements, fatigue at 70 km/h under 120 kg equivalent to 700,000 km, and a 120 kg maximum load.
Mavic's Open Pro C alloy rim uses Maxtal alloy, which Mavic states has a higher strength-to-weight ratio than 6106; the joint is arc welded (SUP) and milled. It is a 622x15C hooked rim, 18 mm high, 19 mm internal, 435 g, for 19 to 28 mm tires.

Mavic publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Mavic makes the Open Pro UST; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Every Open Pro wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. UST tape and a valve are fitted on request.
In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Mavic warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Mavic and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Open Pro UST Rim Brake Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 19mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.
What does UST mean?
Universal System Tubeless, Mavic's tubeless standard; a UST rim bed is shaped so a tubeless tire seats with a floor pump and seals reliably.
What tires fit the Open Pro UST?
25 to 47mm on the disc version, 25 to 32mm on the rim-brake version. A 28mm tire is the pairing most of our customers run.
Is the Open Pro UST lighter than the old Open Pro?
About the same at 430 grams, with a much wider bed, a tubeless bed and ISM4D milling.
Rim brake or disc?
The rim-brake version has Mavic's machined UB brake track; the disc version has a plain sidewall. Pick the one that matches your bike.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Yes. Mavic lists the Open Pro UST Rim Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
Which spoke count should I choose?
It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
