Mavic CXP Pro Rim Brake Rim
The Mavic CXP Pro is the rim Mavic makes for wheel builders who want a deeper alloy road rim than the Open Pro: a welded, eyeleted aluminum extrusion with a semi-aero section, a machined brake track on the rim-brake version and a UST tubeless bed that seats a tire with a floor pump. This page covers the Mavic CXP Pro Rim Brake Rim, the rim-brake version; Mavic also makes a 30mm-deep disc CXP Pro and a carbon CXP Pro. It is the rim for a classic rim-brake road bike that wants a stiff, fast alloy wheel with Mavic's tubeless bed.
The CXP Pro is not sold bare. You choose the hub and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
UST is Mavic's tubeless standard, older than anyone else's, and the Open Pro UST bed is shaped to its tolerances: the tire bead drops into a well and pops onto a precise seat, which is why a UST rim seals with a floor pump when other rims need a compressor. The rim is a 25mm-deep, 15mm-inner double-wall extrusion with a welded SUP joint that is then milled flush, so the brake track on the rim-brake version is continuous, and the ISM4D milling removes material between the spoke holes where the rim carries no load. Eyelets are black to match the matte finish.
How it rides
A CXP Pro wheel is stiffer and a touch faster than an Open Pro wheel, and a little heavier. The deeper section does not flex in a sprint, the UST bed seals a tubeless tire easily, and the machined brake track brakes as well as any alloy rim. For a light, comfortable everyday wheel the Open Pro UST is the choice; for a stiffer, semi-aero rim-brake road wheel, the CXP Pro is the Mavic rim we recommend.

This listing
This is the 700c listing of the CXP Pro, 32h, 36h, about 470g, 15mm inside, 24mm deep, rim-brake. Pick the size that matches your frame; the profile and construction are the same across the range.
The rim-brake version of the CXP Pro carries a machined braking surface on each sidewall, which is what a caliper or cantilever brake needs. It weighs a few grams more than the disc version and it is the one to choose for a rim-brake frame; the disc version is listed separately.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Mavic CXP Pro Rim Brake Rim comes in the drillings listed on this page. It is a rim-brake rim. We build the CXP Pro on DT Swiss 350 and 240, Shimano, White Industries T11, Bitex RAR and Velocity Race Road hubs, usually with Sapim Race, Laser or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and Aerolite, and brass or alloy nipples.
Tire range on the CXP Pro is 25 to 32mm. Pick road as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build it into a wheel
This rim is live in our Custom Wheel Program for road rim brake, track and road single-speed and touring builds. Start a build with the Mavic CXP Pro Rim Brake Rim and the configurator opens with this exact rim pinned at the top of the Mavic list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.
Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.
What Mavic says about testing
Mavic tests rims and wheels at its Competence Center in Chavanod, near Annecy, France: over 175 m2 for static tests and 360 m2 for dynamic tests, almost 47 tests in all. Mavic states its impact test follows UCI rules pushed to 150%; the wheel must not break or deform. Its climatic chamber cycles rims between +70°C and -10°C at 0 to 100% humidity over several days; the braking test runs 750 braking operations between 0 and 70 km/h; the hub torque test runs 100,000 cycles; the dancer bench simulates 500 km of climbing; front-end endurance covers 7,000 km at 70 km/h, plus field tests of 5,000 km (mountain) and 10,000 km (road). For the Comete 50, Mavic states 57 tests, frontal crash results 50% above UCI requirements, fatigue at 70 km/h under 120 kg equivalent to 700,000 km, and a 120 kg maximum load.
Mavic's warranty is two years; Mavic Care registration within 2 months extends wheels to three years, and registered carbon wheels from the 2021 range onward (serials CFA214xxx or CRA214xxx and above) are covered for life. Carbon crash replacement is 50% off in years 1 to 2, 40% in years 3 to 5 and 30% in years 6 to 8. Many Mavic wheels are UCI approved (dates 06.07.2016 to 19.09.2024).

The figures, certificates and media above are Mavic's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the rim.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Mavic makes the CXP Pro; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Every CXP Pro wheel we build gets spokes cut from the rim's measured ERD, is tensioned in stages with a gauge, stress-relieved and trued before it ships. Tubeless tape and a valve are fitted on request.
In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.
Warranty
Manufacturer's warranty. Mavic warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Mavic and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.
ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
CXP Pro Rim Brake Rim questions
What tire width suits this rim?
At 15mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.
CXP Pro or Open Pro?
CXP Pro for a stiffer, deeper semi-aero rim; Open Pro for a lighter, more comfortable everyday rim. Both have Mavic's UST tubeless bed.
Is the CXP Pro tubeless?
Yes. It has a UST bed that seats a tubeless tire with a floor pump; tape and a valve are fitted on request.
What tires fit the CXP Pro?
25 to 32mm. A 28mm tire is the usual pairing.
Is there a disc version?
Yes, the CXP Pro 30 disc rim, on its own page.
Is it tubeless-ready?
Mavic lists the CXP Pro Rim Brake Rim as clincher. Ask us about tubeless conversion if you need it.
Which spoke count should I choose?
It depends on your weight, terrain and the hub, not the rim alone. The configurator recommends a count from your bike type and rider weight, within the drillings this rim is made in.
