Rolf Prima Vigor Alpha Stealth Wheelset

The Rolf Prima Vigor Alpha Stealth wheelset is the top version of the Vigor, the wheel Rolf calls the fastest alloy wheel on the market. It takes the 32mm alloy aero rim and adds a Cerakote ceramic coating to the US-made rims and hub shells, upgrades to Rolf's 6.0-level hubs with Enduro Zero ceramic bearings, and keeps the T2 high engagement drive and titanium freehub. It is one product sold with a Brake Type choice: Vigor Alpha Stealth for rim brakes at 1490 grams, or Vigor Alpha Stealth Disc at 1590 grams.

It is for the rider who wants the best alloy road wheel Rolf makes, with ceramic bearings, a blacked-out finish that resists corrosion and cleans easily, and a rim depth that works for training and racing alike. Rolf says these hoops do not fly under the radar despite the name, and the specification bears that out.

Paired-spoke lacing is what lets Rolf build the Vigor Alpha Stealth with 16 spokes per wheel on the rim brake version. Spokes come to the rim in pairs so their sideways pull cancels at each pair, allowing higher tension and fewer spokes on a light alloy rim without losing stiffness. Fewer spokes also means less drag, which is where the fastest-alloy-wheel claim comes from.

Design and construction

The rim is an alloy clincher, 32mm deep, 20mm inner width, finished in Rolf's ballistic armor Cerakote coating, tubeless compatible and shipped taped. Rolf notes that on the rim brake version the coating on the brake track wears naturally with use, faster in wet and dirty conditions, and that this wear is normal and safe.

Hubs are 6.0 level: TdF 6.0 quick release hubs on the rim brake Vigor Alpha Stealth and XST 6.0 Center Lock hubs on the Vigor Alpha Stealth Disc. Both are designed and manufactured in the USA, assembled in Eugene, Cerakote coated, and fitted with Enduro Zero ceramic bearings. The rear uses the T2 high engagement drive, a 48-tooth ring and three sprung steel pawls, twice as fast as Rolf's earlier 24-tooth ring, and a CNC-machined 6Al-4V titanium freehub in Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 or Campagnolo N3W.

The rim brake set is laced 16 front and 16 rear with a mix of Sapim CX-Ray and CX Speed bladed spokes; the disc set is laced 20 front and 20 rear with Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes. Disc axle options are 15mm, 12mm or 9mm QR front and 142mm thru or 135mm QR rear; rim brake axles are quick release.

How it rides

The Vigor Alpha Stealth is the standard Vigor with the last bit of drag removed. The Enduro Zero ceramic bearings coast freely, the 48-tooth T2 ring engages instantly, and the 16-spoke rim brake build is noticeably quick on the flat and lively on climbs. Stiffness remains a Vigor strength because paired spokes hold high tension, and Rolf lists the Vigor line among its recommendations for heavier and more aggressive riders.

The Vigor Alpha Stealth Disc adds 100 grams for the disc hubs and extra front spokes and gains thru-axle stiffness and consistent braking in every condition. Either version suits riders who race and train on one alloy wheelset, riders who want ceramic bearings without carbon rims, and anyone who wants a wheel that keeps its dark finish for years. For pure climbing the Elan Alpha Stealth is lighter; for time trials the carbon Ares6 is faster.

About this listing

What you are buying here is the Vigor Alpha Stealth Wheelset. The choices on this page are brake type: Disc Brake, Rim Brake; driver type: Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, Campagnolo N3W. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.

Fit and compatibility

Choose Rim Brake or Disc Brake at order time; the hubs differ and the wheels are not convertible. Rim brake: quick release, 100mm front and 130mm rear. Disc: Center Lock rotors, 15mm, 12mm or 9mm QR front, 142mm thru or 135mm QR rear. Freehub bodies on both are Shimano HG 10/11, SRAM XDR 11/12, Campagnolo 11/12 and Campagnolo N3W in titanium.

Rolf's tire chart rates its 20C road rims for 23mm to 32mm tires, with maximum pressures of 110 psi at 23 to 25mm, 100 psi at 28mm and 80 psi at 30 to 32mm. If you want the rim brake track coating to last, keep pads clean and be aware that gritty wet riding wears it faster.

Testing, standards and warranty at Rolf Prima

Rolf Prima builds every complete wheelset by hand at its facility in Eugene, Oregon. The company states that all orders are built by hand there by its own builders, and describes its process as building each wheel three times with two stress cycles in the build to seat and stretch all components. Rolf Prima says hand building lets it hit uniform spoke tensions that machine building cannot match, and that its design allows higher and more targeted spoke tension than a traditionally laced wheel, which it credits with increasing stiffness and improving spoke durability by decreasing the load cycle on each spoke.

The defining feature of a Rolf Prima wheel is Paired Spoke Technology, introduced in 1997. Bringing the spokes to the rim in pairs neutralizes the left and right outward pulling forces, which Rolf Prima says allows it to build true wheels on lighter rims with fewer spokes. Fewer spokes and lighter rims are the basis of the brand's aerodynamic and weight claims. The wheel systems combine paired spokes with the Delta rim profile, internal nipples, and patented details including the Jacketed Nipple, Self-Aligning Nipple, Differential Flange Diameter and Dish Reducing Design. Rolf Prima cites eleven patents behind its technology.

Rolf Prima runs an in-house engineering and testing lab and states it uses the ISO 4210 standard as a base starting point but considers it not tough enough, so it applies its own in-house standards. Published test capabilities include an in-house drum fatigue tester it calls the Thrasher, which compresses years of riding into days; an impact test using a weight calibrated steel anvil that exceeds the UCI 40 joule requirement, striking at spokes, between spokes and at the valve hole; lateral and radial stiffness measurement of rims alone and complete wheels; brake energy, distance and temperature testing developed for carbon clinchers; wind tunnel evaluation; and field testing by sponsored athletes. The Certainty page cites over 10,000 hours of lab testing to above industry standards.

On racing eligibility, Rolf Prima explains that UCI approval only matters for mass start UCI road races, UCI cyclocross and draft legal ITU triathlon. Its standard wheels (Aspin and the Elan family) do not require approval, while most of its deeper or lower spoke count models are non standard and are listed on the UCI approval registry. Rolf Prima does not publish a fixed rider weight limit; it says every wheel has limits that involve riding style and road conditions as well as weight, and directs heavier or more aggressive riders toward stiffer models such as Vigor, Echelon or Ares6. All road wheels can be set up tubeless with the brand's tubeless kit, and adventure, cyclocross and mountain models ship tubeless ready with tape and valves installed.

Rolf Prima backs its wheels with the Certainty program: a five year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, lifetime crash replacement at a discount for registered wheels, a 30 day trade out or return window in the USA, replacement parts availability for any Rolf Prima wheel regardless of age, and stated service response times of same day to 24 hours on calls and email with service work resolved within three days of receipt.

A note on Rolf Prima

Rolf still fields service questions on Vector wheelsets with thirty years and more of riding on them. That is the practical case for a company that stayed in one place doing one thing: the wheel is older than a lot of bike shops and can still be sorted out.

Ordering it from ProWheelBuilder

Rolf Prima builds every Vigor Alpha Stealth and Vigor Alpha Stealth Disc to order by hand in Eugene, Oregon. ProWheelBuilder in Georgia sells the wheelset, takes your brake type, axle and freehub selections, checks them against your frame and cassette, and sends the order to Rolf. If you are weighing this against the standard Vigor, we will tell you plainly that the rim profile is the same and the difference is the coating, the 6.0 hubs, the ceramic bearings and, on the rim brake version, the 16/16 CX-Ray lacing.

If you want a coated or colored alloy wheel on a hub of your choosing, we build custom wheels on Astral rims, Rolf's own rim brand, in our shop.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Rolf Prima gives a one-year limited warranty on its wheels under normal use. Astral is Rolf Prima's rim brand; ask us and we will confirm the current terms for the exact rim before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. Because this wheelset comes assembled from its maker, the warranty that applies is theirs, set out above; ProWheelBuilder's one-year wheel warranty is for wheels we build here. Either way, a claim goes through us and we will manage it.
