Shimano Centerlock Lockring M8010

The Shimano M8010 is a Center Lock lockring with outer serrations, and that detail is the whole reason it exists. The common Center Lock lockring is driven by an internal spline using a cassette tool - and a cassette tool's shaft will not pass over a large thru axle. On a 12, 15 or 20mm thru-axle hub you need a lockring driven from the outside instead.

What it does

So this is not a style choice or an upgrade; it is the correct part for a specific class of hub. Fitting an internal-spline lockring to a thru-axle hub generally means discovering at the worst moment that the tool will not go on, usually with the rotor already in place.

An outer-serration lockring is driven by an external tool - the same kind used for a bottom bracket cup. If you already have one in the box, this is the lockring that uses it.

Aluminum, and a part that should be torqued properly rather than nipped up. A Center Lock rotor is held by this single ring; it is doing the work six bolts do on an ISO rotor.

Fit and compatibility

For Center Lock hubs on 12, 15 or 20mm thru axles. Hubs with a standard quick-release axle can use the internal-spline type as well, so check which tool you have before choosing.

Buying it from ProWheelBuilder

ProWheelBuilder builds wheels in Georgia and is not the manufacturer - Shimano makes this. It is on our bench most days, which is where the notes above come from.

Warranty

Shimano's warranty. Shimano covers its bicycle components for two years from original purchase, with three years on DURA-ACE and XTR and one year on wheels, footwear and soft goods. Shimano's obligation is to repair or replace at its option, against the original dated receipt.

ProWheelBuilder. ProWheelBuilder's one-year wheel warranty covers the wheels we build and does not apply to tools and accessories, which carry their manufacturer's cover.

Shimano Centerlock lockring M8010 questions

Why not just use a normal Center Lock lockring?

Because an internal-spline lockring is driven by a cassette tool, and that tool will not pass over a 12, 15 or 20mm thru axle. The outer serrations exist to be driven from outside.

What tool do I need?

An external tool of the bottom-bracket cup type. If you are set up for internal-spline lockrings only, you will need to add one.

Does it fit non-Shimano hubs?

Center Lock is a defined interface and this suits Center Lock hubs on thru axles. If you are unsure about a particular hub, ask us before ordering.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Shimano Centerlock Lockring M8010?

No. Shimano designs and manufactures it. ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia that stocks it and uses it on the wheels we build.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
