Velocity Race BOOST Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub

The Velocity Race hub is the lighter of the two hub lines the company assembles in Florida, and it is the hub we reach for when a customer wants a wheel that matches from rim to hub. This page covers the Velocity Race BOOST Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub, the mountain-bike disc version in Boost or standard spacing with a centerlock or 6-bolt rotor mount.

These are not the lightest or the fanciest disc hubs we sell, but they are well made, easy to service, priced sensibly and available in a matching color, and for a lot of trail and gravel riders that is the whole brief.

The Velocity Race hub is built to order here. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.

Design and construction

The Race hubshell is machined from aluminum bar with conventional J-bend flanges and anodized in the color range. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, replaceable with a bearing press when they eventually wear.

The Race is lighter than the Standard hub because the shell is machined thinner and the axle is a lighter alloy; the flange spacing is the same, so the two build into wheels of similar stiffness.

The hubs are assembled at the same Jacksonville, Florida facility as the rims, which is why hub and rim colors match exactly and why the two are designed to be built together.

A front hub is a bearing carrier with flanges, and that is the whole job of the front Velocity Race hub: two sealed bearings on a stiff axle, end caps for your fork's standard, and flanges spaced to give the spokes a good bracing angle on the rotor side. There is nothing to engage and nothing to swap. Everything written about freehubs and engagement applies to the rear hub only; what you get up front is the same shell quality and the same seals without any of the moving parts.

How it rides

The main reason to choose the Race hub over a DT Swiss 350 or Bitex is the color match with the rims, and a wheel built that way looks like it was made as a set because it was.

Front wheels on disc bikes take a beating from braking: the rotor side sees the whole braking torque and the spokes on that side run at higher tension. That is why we build the front Velocity Race hub with the rotor-side spokes crossed and tensioned to the rim's limit, and why the hub's flange spacing matters more than its weight. Ridden on a rim-brake bike the same hub makes one of the lightest, simplest front wheels there is.

Which version this is

Version notes. 6-bolt rotor mount, Thru Axle 15x110mm Boost, 28h, 32h, about 150g, in black. If your frame or fork uses a different standard, the other versions of the Velocity Race hub on this site cover it.

Six-bolt is the original disc mount and still the most universal: any ISO 6-bolt rotor from any brand bolts straight on, rotors are cheap and easy to find anywhere, and the six-bolt flange is a robust, simple interface that has been on mountain bikes for twenty-five years. Centerlock rotors do not fit it.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Race hub wheels with DT Competition or Sapim D-Light spokes and brass nipples.

It pairs naturally with the Velocity Blunt 35, Blunt SS, Dually and Cliffhanger, and with any other rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. Tell the configurator your bike type and weight and it suggests a spoke count and lacing pattern to suit.

Build it into a wheel

This hub is live in our Custom Wheel Program for gravel and road disc, mountain bike, MTB single-speed, fat bike and tandem and e-bike builds. Start a build with the Velocity Race Boost Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub and the configurator opens with this exact hub pinned at the top of the Velocity list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.

Velocity's testing and certifications

Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use.

Warranty matches all Velocity products: defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, excluding normal wear and tear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly or maintenance; repair or replacement at Velocity's discretion.

Everything in this section is published by Velocity. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the hub reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

The Race hub is assembled in Florida; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.

The configurator shows only rims and spokes that fit the Race hub's drilling and color, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.

ProWheelBuilder. Lace this into a wheel here and the finished wheel gets our own one-year warranty as well as the maker's. For twelve months we replace broken spokes however they broke, and the work on the wheel is on us - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild where it is needed. If the rim or hub is covered by its manufacturer we put the claim in and chase it; if it is not, we supply an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off the current retail price. Carriage both ways is the customer's, and this does not cover wheels built from parts you send in.

Race BOOST Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the 6-bolt version: any ISO 6-bolt rotor bolts straight on with six T25 bolts, which is still the most common and the easiest rotor to replace anywhere. Centerlock rotors do not fit it - for those, take the centerlock version of the same hub, listed separately.

What is the difference between the Race and Standard hubs?

The Race is lighter, with a thinner machined shell and lighter axle, and comes in colors; the Standard is the heavier, cheaper workhorse. Internals and flange spacing are similar.

Can I get the Race hub in a color to match my rim?

Yes. The factory anodises the Race hub in the same colors as its rims; the colors in stock are listed in the configurator.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Velocity Race BOOST Front Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub?

No. The hub is made by Velocity; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

Thru Axle 15x110mm Boost Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Does it need special spokes?

No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.

How long will the wheel take?

Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. The estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out.
