Velocity Standard ATB Rear Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub

The Velocity Standard ATB hub is the workhorse in Velocity USA's hub range: a 6-bolt disc mountain-bike hub with a machined aluminum shell, sealed cartridge bearings and a pawl freehub, assembled in Florida and priced so that the budget can go into the rim. ATB is Velocity's old-school name for a mountain bike, and the hub suits exactly that: cross-country, trail, gravel and everyday off-road riding. This page covers the Velocity Standard ATB Rear Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub.

The Standard ATB is a little heavier than Velocity's Race hub and comes in black rather than the full color range, and in exchange it costs noticeably less. For a tough, serviceable disc hub under a Blunt, Cliffhanger or Dually, it is very hard to argue with.

The Velocity Standard ATB hub is built to order here. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.

Design and construction

The Standard ATB hubshell is machined from aluminum with conventional J-bend flanges and an ISO 6-bolt rotor mount. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, so replacement years down the line is a ten-minute job with a bearing press. The rear freehub runs pawls on a hardened ratchet ring and swaps between Shimano HG and SRAM XD bodies. End caps convert the hub between quick-release and thru-axle standards; the configurator lists the axle and driver options for the version on this page.

Velocity keeps the flange spacing wide on the rotor side, which is what gives a Standard ATB wheel its lateral stiffness.

Velocity USA assembles its hubs at the same Jacksonville, Florida facility where it makes its rims, which is why hub and rim colors match exactly and why the two are designed to be built together. The hubs use common cartridge bearing sizes and simple pawl freehubs that any shop can service, and spares stay available for years.

How it rides

A Velocity Standard ATB hub does its job quietly. Engagement is quick enough for technical climbing, the bearings spin cleanly out of the box, and the seals keep grit out. It is a cross-country, trail and gravel hub; for enduro, downhill or e-bike torque we would recommend a heavier-duty hub.

We build a lot of Standard ATB wheels for riders replacing a worn stock wheel who want something that will last and do not need a badge.

Which version this is

Version notes. 6-bolt rotor mount, QR 5x135mm, Thru Axle 12x142mm, 32h, 36h, 40h, about 500g, in black. If your frame or fork uses a different standard, the other versions of the Standard ATB on this site cover it.

This is the 6-bolt Standard ATB: the rotor bolts to a flange with six T25 bolts, which is the mount most mountain and gravel rotors still use and the easiest to find a rotor for on the road. If you run centerlock rotors, choose the centerlock version of the same hub instead.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Velocity Standard ATB Rear Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page with the axle and driver options shown in the configurator. Six-bolt rotors. It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Standard ATB wheels with Sapim Race or DT Competition spokes and brass nipples.

It pairs naturally with the Velocity Blunt 35, Blunt SS, Dually and Cliffhanger, and with Stan's, WTB, DT Swiss and Race Face rims that match its drilling. Tell the configurator your bike type and weight and it suggests a spoke count and lacing pattern to suit.

Build it with us

We build this hub to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the Velocity Standard ATB Rear Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for gravel and road disc, mountain bike, fat bike and touring builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.

Velocity's testing and certifications

Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use. Velocity's product pages do not state where the hubs are manufactured, and the company publishes no bearing-life, freehub-durability, sealing, load or fatigue test figures and no third-party certification for hubs; the specification tables on its hub pages (weight, bearings, axles) are blank and refer customers to the tech page.

Velocity states cassette-body pawls should be inspected and lubricated once a year or more depending on use and environment; cassette bodies come in Shimano, SRAM XD/XDR and Campagnolo fitments.

What Velocity does state: most hubs use cartridge bearings "with weather-resistant seals", and Race hubs add "double-bearing seals for added protection." Bearing preloads are set at the factory with no need for adjustment. Velocity cautions that "Sealed does not mean waterproof" - bearings that are submerged, pressure-washed or otherwise waterlogged should be serviced or replaced by a professional mechanic, and service depends on hub type. Velocity sells replacement sealed cartridge bearings in 6001, 6802 and 6902 sizes, offers loose-ball bearings as an option on custom wheels, and ships mountain disc hubs with parts to convert between 9 mm quick-release, 12 mm and 15 mm thru-axle.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Velocity USA assembles the Standard ATB hub; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.

The configurator shows only rims and spokes that fit the hub's drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.

ProWheelBuilder. Wheels we build around this part are covered by our own one-year warranty alongside the maker's. Within the year: broken spokes replaced regardless of cause, and the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning or a complete rebuild - included. A manufacturer-covered rim or hub failure is a claim we make and manage for you; one they will not cover is answered with an eligible replacement at 25% off retail. Shipping each way is yours. Parts you supply yourself fall outside it.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

Standard ATB Rear Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the 6-bolt version: any ISO 6-bolt rotor bolts straight on with six T25 bolts, which is still the most common and the easiest rotor to replace anywhere. Centerlock rotors do not fit it - for those, take the centerlock version of the same hub, listed separately.

What does ATB mean?

All-terrain bike, Velocity's traditional name for a mountain-bike hub. The Standard ATB is a 6-bolt disc MTB hub.

Standard ATB or Race hub?

The Race is lighter and comes in colors; the Standard ATB is cheaper and black. Both are reliable sealed-bearing hubs with similar internals.

Which freehub bodies fit the Standard ATB?

Shimano HG and SRAM XD, selectable in the configurator for the rear hub.

Is the Standard ATB e-bike rated?

No. For e-bikes choose a hub with a full-contact or steel-reinforced freehub such as a DT Swiss 350 or Hope Pro 5.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Velocity Standard ATB Rear Black ISO 6 Bolt Disc Hub?

No. The hub is made by Velocity; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

QR 5x135mm Rear or Thru Axle 12x142mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
