White Industries Splined Fixed Gear Cog

A splined fixed-gear cog for White Industries' splined fixed interface. The point of a splined fitting on a fixed-gear bike is simple: a threaded cog is driven on by pedalling and held on by a reverse-threaded lockring, and under hard backpedalling that is the one load the thread was never ideal for. Splines take the drive directly.

Design and construction

On a fixed wheel there is no freewheel to absorb anything - every bit of braking you do with your legs goes back through the cog. A splined interface carries that reverse load across the full set of splines rather than through a thread, so the cog cannot unwind itself under deceleration the way a poorly fitted threaded cog can.

Steel, about 90g. It is a wearing part that is meant to be swapped: as the teeth hook with mileage you replace the cog, not the hub.

This is made in Petaluma, California, by a company that has been machining its own parts since 1978 rather than outsourcing them. On a small, high-tolerance component that is the whole difference - between a part designed to be serviced and kept, and one designed to be replaced and forgotten.

Fit and compatibility

Made for the White Industries splined fixed interface - check that your hub carries that fitting rather than a standard freewheel thread. If you are not certain which you have, text us and describe the hub, or send a photograph.

Splined fixed gear cog questions

Why splined instead of threaded?

Because of backpedalling. On a fixed wheel the cog is loaded in both directions, and splines carry the reverse load better than a thread does.

Do I still need a lockring?

You still want the cog retained. Tell us how the wheel is being built and we will make sure the cog, lockring and hub all match up.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the White Industries Splined Fixed Gear Cog?

No. White Industries designs and manufactures it in Petaluma, California. ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia that stocks the part and fits it to the wheels we build.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
