DT Swiss BR 710 Disc Brake Rim

The DT Swiss BR 710 is the Big Ride fat-bike rim: 26in, 76mm wide inside, 17mm deep, and machined with cut-outs between the spoke holes so that a rim wide enough for a 4.0 to 4.8in tire still comes in at around 675 grams. Fat-bike rims tend to be either heavy or flimsy; the BR 710 uses an extra-strong alloy and a specially designed profile to be strong and stable without the weight.

This page covers the DT Swiss BR 710 Disc Brake Rim in 26in. The BR 710 is sold here only inside a wheel we build: choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia, laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The factory extrudes the BR 710 from an extra-strong aluminum alloy in a profile designed from scratch for very large tires, then machines the sophisticated cut-outs that remove material where a fat rim does not need it. The nipple interface is optimized without eyelets, and the spoke holes are angled to the wheel's dish, which on a fat bike with offset hubs matters more than on any other wheel.

The BR 710 is disc only, and tubeless conversion is possible with a wide fat-bike tape and sealant.

How it rides

A BR 710 wheel changes how a fat bike rides. Stock fat wheels are often the heaviest part of the bike; a BR 710 on a 350 Big Ride hub with double-butted spokes cuts a noticeable chunk of rotating weight, and the bike accelerates and steers more like a normal mountain bike. The 81mm bed supports a 4.5 to 4.8in tire at the very low pressures that make snow and sand rideable.

The BR 710 is strong enough for year-round fat-bike trail riding, not just winter cruising. Fat-bike riders who move to a BR 710 wheelset usually comment on the steering first: a lighter rim at the outside of a 26 x 4.8in wheel changes how quickly the bike changes direction more than any other part.

This version

This version is the BR 710 in 26in, drilled 32h, about 675g, 76mm inside, 15.8mm deep, disc. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.

This is the disc-brake BR 710: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The DT Swiss BR 710 Disc Brake Rim comes in 26in and 32h drilling. It is a disc-brake fat-bike rim. We build the BR 710 on DT Swiss 350 Big Ride hubs (150 front, 197 rear), Hope Fatsno, Industry Nine 1/1 Fat, Onyx Fat and Bitex FB hubs, usually with Sapim Race or Competition spokes and brass nipples.

Tire range on the BR 710 is 3.8 to 4.8in. Pick fat bike as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern for the offset.

Build it into a wheel

This rim is live in our Custom Wheel Program for fat bike builds. Start a build with the DT Swiss Br 710 Disc Brake Rim and the configurator opens with this exact rim pinned at the top of the DT Swiss list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

How DT Swiss tests its rims

DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.

Each rim page states a maximum system weight and ASTM classification: the R 460 road rim is rated "Max. System weight 110 kg", "ASTM classification 1" and not approved for e-bikes; the RR 481 is rated 130 kg, ASTM classification 2 and "Approved for e-bikes Yes (max. 32Km/h or max. 250W)".

Everything in this section is published by DT Swiss. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

DT Swiss makes the BR 710; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.

ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

BR 710 Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 76mm inside this is a plus or fat width, for tires from about 2.6in upward. Running a narrow tire on a rim this wide leaves the casing stretched and vague, so match it to the tire it was designed around.

What tires fit the BR 710?

Fat-bike tires from 3.8 to 4.8in on a 26in rim.

Is the BR 710 tubeless?

It can be converted with a wide fat-bike tubeless tape and sealant; we fit tape and a valve on request.

Which hubs go with the BR 710?

Fat-bike hubs in 150mm front and 197mm rear spacing: DT Swiss 350 Big Ride, Hope Fatsno, Industry Nine, Onyx and Bitex FB. The configurator lists them.

Why the cut-outs?

They remove material between the spoke holes where an 81mm rim does not need it, which is how the BR 710 stays around 675g despite its width.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the DT Swiss BR 710 Disc Brake Rim?

No. The rim is made by DT Swiss; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. DT Swiss lists the BR 710 Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
