DT Swiss R 460 Disc Brake Rim

The DT Swiss R 460 is the all-purpose alloy road rim: light, tubeless compatible, happy with the 28 to 32mm tires most road bikes run now, and offered with a machined sidewall for rim brakes or a non-machined sidewall for disc. At 450 grams for the non-machined version and 460 for the machined, the R 460 builds into a road wheel that is lighter than most stock sets and far more durable.

This page covers the DT Swiss R 460 Disc Brake Rim in 700c. The R 460 is sold here only inside a wheel we build: choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia, laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The factory extrudes the R 460 from its own aluminum alloy and joins it with a precision sleeve, which keeps the brake track aligned on the machined version and gives the rim a long fatigue life. The profile is a shallow, light section with a 20mm-class inner width that supports a 25 to 32mm tire well and clears up to 42mm for a light gravel build.

The R 460 bead is DT Swiss's tubeless profile, seals with the tape and valves, and takes standard nipples with no proprietary washers. The spoke holes are angled to the wheel's dish, so the R 460 builds to even tension without fuss. Choose the machined sidewall for rim brakes and the plain sidewall for disc.

How it rides

An R 460 wheel is quick and comfortable. The rim is light enough that a 32-spoke wheel on a 350 accelerates like a much more expensive set, and the shallow section rides smoothly over rough tarmac. With a 28mm tubeless tire it is about as comfortable as an alloy road wheel gets.

The R 460 is not an aero rim and it is not the rim for a heavy rider on rough roads; the R 470 and RR 421 are deeper and stronger. For everyday road riding, club rides and light gravel it is the DT Swiss rim we recommend first.

This version

This version is the R 460 in 700c, drilled 24h, 28h, 32h, about 460g, 18mm inside, 22.5mm deep, disc. Where the same rim is sold in another size or brake type, that is a separate listing with its own page.

This is the disc-brake R 460: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The DT Swiss R 460 Disc Brake Rim comes in 700c and 24h, 28h, 32h drilling, in machined (rim brake) or non-machined (disc) sidewall. We build the R 460 on 350 and 240 hubs, Shimano 105 and Ultegra, White Industries T11 and CLD, Bitex RAR and BX 106, and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim Laser, Race or CX-Ray spokes or Competition and Aerolite.

Tire range on the R 460 is 25 to 42mm. The configurator recommends spoke count and lacing from your bike type and weight.

Build it with us

We build this rim to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the DT Swiss R 460 Disc Brake Rim already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for gravel and road disc, track and road single-speed and touring builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

How DT Swiss tests its rims

DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.

DT Swiss gives a 24-month defects warranty on all products; first owners of carbon component rims bought after 1 March 2025 receive a lifetime warranty against material and workmanship defects, and under the Fair-Share policy a carbon rim damaged by a riding error is replaced for a fixed contribution for 10 years after purchase. UCI approval is granted to complete wheels: DT Swiss wheels such as the ARC 1100 DICUT 700C 38 SPO (approved 2 May 2024) are on the UCI list, but component rims are not listed individually.

DT Swiss publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

DT makes the R 460; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Disc or rim brake R 460?

This is the disc version. It has no machined braking surface, so the sidewall is a plain extrusion - nothing to wear through, and no need to ever retire the rim because the brake track has worn thin. It is tagged here for gravel, trekking and touring builds.

Both versions weigh 460g and share a 596mm ERD, so this is purely a question of what stops your bike. On a disc frame, take this one; the rim-brake version is listed separately.

Warranty

DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.

ProWheelBuilder. Wheels we build around this part are covered by our own one-year warranty alongside the maker's. Within the year: broken spokes replaced regardless of cause, and the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning or a complete rebuild - included. A manufacturer-covered rim or hub failure is a claim we make and manage for you; one they will not cover is answered with an eligible replacement at 25% off retail. Shipping each way is yours. Parts you supply yourself fall outside it.

R 460 Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 18mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.

Machined or non-machined R 460?

Machined sidewall for rim brakes; non-machined for disc brakes, where the plain sidewall saves a few grams and looks cleaner.

What tires fit the R 460?

25 to 42mm. A 28 to 32mm tubeless tire is the pairing most of our customers run.

Is the R 460 tubeless?

Yes. It is tubeless-ready with the maker's tape and valves, which we fit on request.

How does the R 460 compare with the R 470?

The R 470 is deeper and a little heavier and stiffer; the R 460 is lighter and more comfortable. Heavier riders and rough roads favor the R 470.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the DT Swiss R 460 Disc Brake Rim?

We are not. DT Swiss manufactures the rim; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. DT Swiss lists the R 460 Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
