DT Swiss R 470 Disc Brake Rim

The DT Swiss R 470 is the endurance road rim in the DT Swiss alloy range: a 20mm inner width, a slightly deeper and stiffer section than the R 460, a sleeved joint and a tubeless-ready bead, rated by DT Swiss for a system weight up to 120kg. The R 470 is the rim we suggest for riders who want a road disc wheel that will take rough roads, a heavier rider or a winter of commuting without going out of true.

This page covers the DT Swiss R 470 Disc Brake Rim in 700c. The R 470 is built to order here. Choose the hub, spokes and nipples in the configurator; the wheel leaves Georgia laced, tensioned and trued.

Design and construction

The factory extrudes the R 470 from its own aluminum alloy and joins it with a precision sleeve, which keeps the seam aligned and gives the rim a long fatigue life. The section is deeper than the R 460 with thicker walls, which is where the 120kg rating and the extra stiffness come from. The 20mm inner width is right for 25 to 35mm tires and works up to 42mm for a light gravel build.

The R 470 bead is DT Swiss's tubeless profile, seals with the tape and valves, and takes standard nipples with no proprietary washers. The spoke holes are angled to the wheel's dish, so the R 470 builds to high, even tension.

How it rides

An R 470 wheel is solid. It does not flex under a big rider in a sprint, it holds true through potholes, and with a 30mm tubeless tire it rides comfortably. It is a little heavier than the R 460 and you feel that on a climb, but for an everyday road disc wheel that has to survive real roads it is the better rim.

We build a lot of R 470 wheels on DT 350 hubs for riders replacing a factory wheelset that went out of true.

Which version this is

What this listing covers: the R 470 in 700c with 24h, 28h, 32h drilling, about 450g, 20mm inside, 23mm deep, disc. If you need it in another size or for the other brake type, it is listed separately.

This is the disc-brake R 470: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The DT Swiss R 470 Disc Brake Rim comes in 700c and 24h, 28h, 32h drilling. It is a disc-brake road rim with no braking surface. We build the R 470 on DT 350 and 240 hubs, Bitex BX 106, Hope RS4, White Industries CLD, Industry Nine 1/1 and Chris King R45 hubs, usually with Sapim Race, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or Competition and Aerolite.

Tire range on the R 470 is 25 to 42mm. Tell the configurator your bike type and weight and it suggests a spoke count and lacing pattern to suit.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for gravel and road disc, track and road single-speed and touring builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the DT Swiss R 470 Disc Brake Rim and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

DT Swiss's testing and certifications

DT Swiss tests rims as part of complete wheels in its Performance Test Center in Biel. DT Swiss states that test methods and parameters vary with the intended use, the maximum system weight and the ASTM F 2043 riding conditions, and are written into an internal factory standard which "ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)". Published methods include a wheel impact test (with and without tire, monitoring rim buckling, spoke tension and run-out), a drum test in which a wheel loaded to its permissible system weight rolls over obstacles on a steel drum for a set mileage, a lateral stiffness test and a burst pressure test. No impact energies or cycle counts are published.

Each rim page states a maximum system weight and ASTM classification: the R 460 road rim is rated "Max. System weight 110 kg", "ASTM classification 1" and not approved for e-bikes; the RR 481 is rated 130 kg, ASTM classification 2 and "Approved for e-bikes Yes (max. 32Km/h or max. 250W)".

Certifications

  • ISO 4210 / ASTM F 2043 — DT Swiss states its internal factory standard 'ensures compliance with the current international standards (e.g. ISO 4210)' and sets test parameters by ASTM F 2043 riding conditions (self-declared, no certificate published) (source)
  • ASTM classification per rim — R 460: ASTM classification 1, max system weight 110 kg, not e-bike approved; RR 481: ASTM classification 2, max system weight 130 kg, approved for e-bikes (max. 32 km/h or max. 250 W) (source)
  • UCI approved wheels — UCI list version 2024.10.02 lists DT Swiss complete wheels, e.g. ARC 1100 DICUT 700C 38 SPO (02.05.2024), GRC 1100/1400 DI 700C CL 30 and CL 50, AR/ER 1600 SP and A/E 1800 SP 700C/650B CL 30, ARC 1100/1400 DI 700C CL 38 (all 13.06.2024); earlier ARC/ERC/PRC/GRC models 2016-2023. Component rims are not listed individually (source)

Everything in this section is published by DT Swiss. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the rim reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

DT makes the R 470; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. The build is the same every time: measured ERD, spokes cut to the half millimeter, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief, a final true, and tubeless tape and a valve on request.

The configurator shows only hubs and spokes that match the R 470 drilling, strikes through combinations that are not made, and prices the wheel live.

Warranty

DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.

ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

R 470 Disc Brake Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 20mm inside this is a road width. It suits roughly 25 to 32mm tires, which is where most road bikes now sit, and it will run a 23 if you still want one. Go much wider than 32 on this rim and the tire starts to balloon above the sidewalls and squirm when you lean on it.

What is the difference between the R 470 and the R 460?

The R 470 is deeper, stiffer and rated for heavier riders; the R 460 is lighter and more comfortable. Both are 20mm-class tubeless-ready sleeved rims.

What is the rider weight limit on the R 470?

DT rates the R 470 for a system weight (rider, bike and gear) up to 120kg.

What tires fit the R 470?

25 to 42mm. A 28 to 32mm tubeless tire is the pairing most of our customers run.

Is the R 470 tubeless?

Yes. It is tubeless-ready with tape and valves, which we fit on request.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the DT Swiss R 470 Disc Brake Rim?

No. The rim is made by DT Swiss; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. DT Swiss lists the R 470 Disc Brake Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
