ENVE Composites G27 Gravel Disc Clincher Rim

The ENVE G27 is the 650b member of ENVE's gravel range, built for the 50 to 57mm tires that a smaller wheel makes room for. It is a carbon rim with a 27mm inner width, 35.5mm outer and about 320 grams, molded in Ogden, Utah, with the same hookless, wide, blunted bead as the G23 that squeezes the tire on a rim strike rather than cutting it. the company says the G-Series tests close to its M-Series cross-country rims for toughness.

This page covers the ENVE Composites G27 Gravel Disc Clincher Rim. The G27 comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the hub, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.

Design and construction

The factory molds the G27 with its patented molded spoke holes, so no hole is drilled through the carbon and the rim keeps its strength at the spoke bed. The bead wall is wide and blunt to protect the tire against pinch flats, and hookless, which means tubeless-ready tires only and a maximum pressure printed on the rim. The 27mm inner width is tuned for 50 to 57mm tires, which on a 650b wheel give a gravel bike the rolling diameter of a 700c bike with far more air volume.

External nipples with ENVE's locking design, standard J-bend spokes, disc only.

How it rides

A G27 wheel with a 50mm tire is the plush end of gravel: enormous air volume at low pressure, grip on loose climbs, and a rim light enough that the bike still feels quick. The wide bead lets you run the tire soft without folding it in corners or pinching it on rocks.

For 700c bikes and 35 to 45mm tires there is the G23; the G27 is the 650b rim for big tires.

About this listing

Version notes. 27.5in, 24h, about 320g, 27mm inside, 25mm deep, disc. The other sizes and brake versions of the G27 have their own listings; this page is for this one.

This is the disc-brake G27: plain sidewalls, no brake track to wear, a touch lighter. It fits any disc-brake bike and it is the version most of our customers now build; the rim-brake version is a separate listing.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The ENVE Composites G27 Gravel Disc Clincher Rim comes in the drillings listed on this page. It is a disc-brake rim. We build the G27 on the brand's own hubs, Chris King R45, DT Swiss 240 and 180, Industry Nine 1/1 and SOLiX, White Industries CLD and Hope RS4 hubs, usually with Sapim CX-Ray or CX-Sprint spokes or DT Aerolite, and brass or alloy nipples.

Tire range on the G27 is 47 to 57mm, tubeless-ready tires only. Pick your bike type and weight in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build it into a wheel

This rim is live in our Custom Wheel Program for gravel and road disc, mountain bike and MTB single-speed builds. Start a build with the ENVE Composites G27 Gravel Disc Clincher Rim and the configurator opens with this exact rim pinned at the top of the ENVE Composites list — you choose the rest of the parts and it validates every combination as you go.

Spoke head is decided by the hub, not the rim: this rim builds equally well with J-bend or straight-pull spokes, and the configurator only offers the spokes that match the hub you pick.

Testing, standards and warranty at ENVE Composites

ENVE makes and tests its rims in Ogden, Utah. For mountain rims it runs three drop tests, each dropping a calibrated weight onto a wheel with an inflated tire. Test 1 (since 2007) strikes both rim walls and is raised until first visible damage; ENVE requires 10 in for XC, 12 in for trail and 14 in for gravity rims. Test 2 (since 2014) strikes one rim wall to mimic pinch-flat hits, requiring 5 in (XC), 6 in (trail), 8 in (gravity) and 10 in (DH race). Test 3 (since 2021) rotates the wheel between hits so every spoke hole is struck, 100-plus impacts per rim. ENVE states the 2024 M6 improved 47% over the M630 and the M8 21% over the M730.

For hookless road rims ENVE states it has run over 1,000 tire tests in eight years. ISO 4210 requires a tire to hold 110% of its maximum pressure for five minutes (5 bar/72.5 psi for a 28 mm tire); ENVE approves a 28 mm tire only if it holds 120 psi, 165% of the ETRTO/ISO maximum.

ENVE Composites publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the rim into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

ENVE makes the G27; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.

Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.

Warranty

ENVE Composites's warranty. ENVE gives the original owner a five-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, alongside its Lifetime Incident Protection program, which covers rims, forks, bars, stems, seatposts and hubs damaged in riding incidents.

ProWheelBuilder. If we lace this into a wheel for you, that wheel also carries ProWheelBuilder's own one-year warranty, which covers broken spokes regardless of cause and all wheel-related labor, including truing and rebuilding, for a year from purchase. Where a rim or hub is covered by its maker, we make the manufacturer's claim for you and coordinate it; where it is not, we offer an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off current retail. Shipping to and from us is the customer's. This cover does not extend to wheels built from components you supply yourself.

G27 Gravel Disc Clincher Rim questions

What tire width suits this rim?

At 27mm inside this is a trail width, sized around 2.1 to 2.4in tires. That is wide enough to stop a modern trail casing rolling under you in a corner without pushing the tread so flat that it wears down the middle.

Which spokes and nipples suit the G27?

For most riders a double-butted spoke such as Sapim Race or DT Competition with brass nipples; lighter riders can go to Sapim Laser or CX-Ray. The configurator recommends a gauge and count for the G27 from your bike type and weight.

What does hookless mean for the G23?

Use tubeless-ready tires and stay under the maximum pressure printed on the rim; for a 40mm gravel tire that is well above what you would run anyway.

G23 or G27?

G23 is 700c for 35 to 45mm tires; G27 is 650b for 50 to 57mm tires. Pick by wheel size and the tires you run.

Is the G23 tough enough for rough gravel?

Yes. ENVE says it tests close to its cross-country mountain rims, and the wide blunted bead is designed to resist pinch flats on rock strikes.

Is the G23 made in the USA?

Yes. ENVE molds its rims in Ogden, Utah.

Is it tubeless-ready?

Yes. ENVE Composites lists the G27 Gravel Disc Clincher Rim as clincher tubeless compatible; we tape and fit a valve when you choose the tubeless option.
