ENVE SES 2.3 Wheelset
The ENVE SES 2.3 is the lightest wheel in the SES road family and the one ENVE built with mountains in mind. It pairs a 28mm deep front rim with a 32mm deep rear, both molded as hookless carbon, and hangs them on ENVE's INNERDRIVE Premium straight-pull hubs. ENVE lists the complete wheelset at 1,222 grams plus or minus 3 percent, which puts the SES 2.3 in the territory where you feel the difference on every steep pitch.
This is a road wheel for riders who spend their best days going uphill and their most nervous ones coming back down. The shallow depth keeps crosswind behavior calm on exposed descents, and ENVE still shaped the rim to be, in their words, respectfully aerodynamic. ENVE is explicit that the SES 2.3 is not for off-road or gravel use; if your rides mix in dirt, the SES 3.4 or the AR40 are the better fit.
Within the SES lineup, the SES 2.3 is the specialist. The SES 3.4 is the all-rounder and the SES 4.5 is the speed wheel; the SES 2.3 trades some of that aero return for the lowest weight ENVE offers in a tubeless road rim.
Design and construction
The SES 2.3 rim is 21mm wide internally on both front and rear, which is narrower than the 25mm SES 3.4 and SES 4.5. That width is built around a 27mm aero-optimized tubeless tire, with a 25mm labeled tire as the minimum and a maximum pressure of 90 psi (6.2 bar) at that minimum size. The bead is hookless, using ENVE's Wide Hookless Bead profile at the leading edge of the rim to spread impact energy and reduce the chance of a pinch flat. Only tubeless-ready tires are approved on this rim. ENVE builds the rim with continuous fibers and tapered laminates, and the front rim weighs 275 grams, the rear 280 grams.
Both wheels are laced 24-hole to the INNERDRIVE Premium hub. INNERDRIVE Premium uses an oversized 42mm steel ratchet positioned inboard, with 40, 60, 80 and 100-tooth ratchet options; the stock road ratchet is the 60-tooth at 6 degrees of engagement. The hub is a straight-pull design with anti-twist spoke holes and Perfect Preload, ENVE's automatic bearing preload system, running on steel bearings. ENVE says the current Premium hubset saves 60 grams over the previous generation and weighs 326 grams as a pair.
Brake mount is centerlock, and ENVE notes lockrings are not included with this wheel. Axle spacing is 12x100 front and 12x142 rear. ENVE lists the complete front wheel at 558 grams and the rear at 690 grams with tape and valve installed. Effective rim diameter is 604mm front and 599mm rear, and the rim takes 25mm tubeless tape.
How it rides
On a climb the SES 2.3 behaves like a wheel that weighs what ENVE says it weighs. The low rotating mass shows up when you stand and surge, and the 24-spoke straight-pull build stays crisp under out-of-the-saddle efforts rather than flexing into the brake rotor. The 21mm inner width with a 27 or 28mm tire gives a rounder tire profile than the wider SES rims, which some riders prefer for the way it corners.
On flat roads and rolling terrain, the SES 2.3 is honest: it is not as fast as the SES 3.4 or SES 4.5 in a headwind or a fast group, and ENVE does not pretend otherwise. What you get in exchange is a wheel that is nearly unbothered by gusts, easy to control on switchback descents, and light enough that a long day with a lot of vertical feels shorter. Riders who race hill climbs, live in the mountains, or simply value low weight over aero will get the most from it.

What this page sells
About this SES 2.3 Wheelset listing. The choices on this page are driver type: None (front wheel), Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo N3W. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.
Fit and compatibility
ENVE sells the SES 2.3 as a single wheel. Choose Front or Rear at checkout, and buy one of each for a set. The current SES 2.3 is offered with black decals. Rear wheels are built with your choice of Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, or Campagnolo N3W freehub body; the front has no driver.
It is a 700c wheel only, for disc brake road bikes with 12x100 and 12x142 thru-axles and centerlock rotor mounts. Lockrings are not included, so plan to reuse yours or add a pair.
ENVE's testing and certifications
ENVE Composites designs, tests and manufactures its carbon rims in an 80,000 square foot facility in Ogden, Utah. ENVE describes the site as having manufacturing, assembly, design, R&D, test lab, customer support and the business team under one roof, and says it has been committed to US manufacturing since 2007. Every SES rim is handmade in Ogden, and ENVE states that a new lay-up technician undergoes six months of training before certification. Wheels are built to order, which ENVE says minimizes waste and allows custom hub, spoke and decal options.
ENVE publishes its impact test program in detail. Three in-house standards are used: a standard impact test (since 2007) that drops a weight onto both rim walls to simulate square edge hits, with drop heights of 10 inches for XC, 12 inches for trail and 14 inches for gravity rims; a single sided impact test (since 2014) that loads only one rim wall, at 5, 6, 8 and 10 inches for XC, trail, gravity and DH race; and an every spoke hole impact test (since 2021) in which the wheel is rotated after each hit so every spoke hole is struck until first visible damage, which can mean more than 100 impacts on one rim. ENVE reports its current M Series rims outscore the previous generation on that cumulative fatigue score by 10 to 47 percent depending on model.
ENVE's hookless rims use a Wide Hookless Bead, a wider, more forgiving surface at the leading edge of the rim that ENVE says dissipates impact energy and reduces the likelihood of pinch flatting a tubeless tire. ENVE states the hookless design allows machined metal tooling to hold a precise bead seat diameter that meets the ETRTO requirement. In the eight years since its first hookless road wheels, ENVE reports more than 1,000 tubeless tire tests; for a tire to be listed as approved it must hold 120 psi, or 165 percent of the ETRTO/ISO reference pressure, well beyond the ISO 4210 requirement of 110 percent for five minutes. Maximum pressures are published per model: SES 3.4 and SES 4.5 are rated 80 psi with 27 to 29 mm tires and 67 psi with tires over 30 mm; SES 2.3 and SES 6.7 are rated 90 psi with a 25 mm tire. ENVE advises always defaulting to the lower of the rim and tire maximum. ENVE does not publish a wheel specific rider weight limit; its tire pressure guidance suggests riders in the 240 to 250 lb range move to 30 to 32 mm tires to stay within pressure limits, and its complete bikes carry a 300 lb rider limit.
The Smart ENVE System (SES) is built on the Real-World Fast philosophy developed with aerodynamicist Simon Smart since 2009. Rather than optimizing for a steady wind tunnel condition, ENVE develops rim shapes for rapid airflow reattachment after gusts, and states that SES wheels are tested at 20 mph and 30 mph across a weighted range of wind angles, with a shallower front rim for crosswind stability and a deeper rear rim for reduced drag. The SES PRO line was developed with UAE Team Emirates and Tadej Pogacar under World Tour requirements, which ENVE notes include compliance with the governing bodies, and ENVE's Custom Road bike is stated to be UCI compliant and approved for UCI sanctioned events. The INNERDRIVE hub in current SES and G Series wheels uses a 42 mm oversized ratchet positioned over the bearings with Perfect Preload wave washers, and ENVE says it has been proven by UAE Team Emirates over tens of thousands of World Tour miles.
ENVE covers rims and components with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner (hub internals and bearings one year); subsequent owners receive five years from the manufacture date. A separate crash replacement program replaces rims and components at no charge for the first three years from purchase, with a prorated discount after that, for original owners with proof of purchase. ENVE says it does not design products to be indestructible, and that labor and shipping are not included.
